‘And Just Like That' fans are thrilled that Carrie and ‘manipulative' Aidan have split again: ‘She don't need that loser'
And just like that… strike three for Aidan Shaw. In Thursday's episode of 'And Just Like That,' Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her long-distance love (played by John Corbett) called it quits — for the third time — and fans are rejoicing. In the season's ninth episode, titled 'Present Tense,' the couple clash over Aidan's jealousy toward Carrie's friendship with her downstairs neighbor and writing partner, Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake). Aidan confesses he still has trust issues stemming from Carrie's infamous affair with Big in 'Sex and the City.' Advertisement 8 Carrie and Aidan called it quits for the third time in Thursday's episode of 'And Just Like That.' HBO MAX The tension boils over into a street-side argument, and by the end, they decide to part ways — again. Carrie and Aidan's on-again, off-again romance dates back to Seasons 3 and 4 of the original series, where they also broke up — twice. Advertisement And this split has certainly put viewers in high spirits, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their excitement. 8 Fans are rejoicing that the pair's on-again, off-again romance is over. HBO MAX 8 Carrie and Aidan previously dated in Seasons 3 and 4 of 'Sex and the City.' 'AND JUST LIKE THAT NO MORE AIDAN COUNTRY BUMPKIN SELF 😭🫶🏻,' one user wrote. 'Carrie finally woke up and realized she was hot and rich asf! She don't need that loser next to her.' Advertisement Another person posted, 'CARRIE LEFT AIDAN!!!!!! 🚨🚨 Yay! He was the literal worst. He was so manipulative.' 'I never thought I would say this, but thank God Carrie and Aidan finally broke up,' a third said. 8 Other viewers weren't as thrilled with the news of the couple's split. HBO MAX Other critics, however, weren't quite as enthusiastic. Advertisement 'Everyone seems so happy with what has happened with Aidan. I know he is no longer who Carrie needs, but did people actually hate him from 'SATC'?' one user posted. 'I always thought he was the one for her. I'm not celebrating — I'm sad about this.' Another fan was more critical of the reason behind the split, writing: 'I think it was lazy for Carrie and Aidan to break up for the same reason. What's the lesson? Men don't change? You never get over cheating? Don't try to rekindle an old romance? I think I would have just enjoyed it more if they broke up for something different.' 8 Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw and John Corbett as Aidan Shaw in 'And Just Like That' HBO MAX 'And Just Like That' executive producer Elisa Zuritsky told TVLine on Thursday that Carrie and Aidan's breakup was decided 'pretty early on' this season. 'It wasn't a fiery debate in the [writers'] room,' she told the outlet. 'I think it really came down to the way the previous season ended, with Aidan's family proving to be such an obstacle.' Zuritsky added that the writers 'really did want to play it out in the real world and think of [Carrie and Aidan] as real people and take them out of the fantasy Disney prince and princess happy ending that we were kind of playing with in Season 2. It did feel like too much to ask of those two people, especially with their baggage.' 8 Carrie Bradshaw and Aidan Shaw in 'Sex and the City.' Fellow executive producer Julie Rottenberg also weighed in, noting that while Carrie and Aidan are 'in many ways, maybe older, wiser people,' their final scene reveals that 'everything that's always right under the surface — it all boils down to that.' Advertisement 'I think we all knew their problems were systemic enough that they would not survive,' she told TVLine. The episode wasn't all heartbreak, though. Parker's good friend Andy Cohen made a brief cameo, reprising his 'Sex and the City' role as Daniel, the shoe salesman on a first-name basis with Carrie. 8 Andy Cohen made a brief cameo in Thursday's episode of 'And Just Like That,' reprising his 'SATC' role as Daniel. ‘And Just Like That' Season 3 Episode 9 Ending Explained: What Taylor Swift Song Plays After Carrie and Aidan's Breakup?
How you feel about the end of And Just Like That… Season 3 Episode 9 'Present Tense' will surely depend upon how you feel about Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett). The HBO MAX hit reunited the Sex and the City lovebirds last season, but not without a hitch. Aidan couldn't fully commit to Carrie because he had to be in Virginia to care for his troubled son Wyatt (Logan Souza). So most of And Just Like That… Season 3 has followed Carrie patiently waiting, yearning, and compromising for Aidan. And Just Like That… Season 3 Episode 9 finally ends this holding pattern once and for all, and with a moody cut from Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Society: The Anthology… **Spoilers for Season 3 Episode 9 'Present Tense,' now streaming on HBO MAX** Our long national nightmare is finally over. Carrie and Aidan finally broke up on And Just Like That… On last week's And Just Like That…, Aidan basically invited himself to move into Carrie's new place without first giving her the context that Wyatt has decided to live full time with mom Kathy (Rosemarie DeWitt) and her doctor-prescribed Adderall supply. Carrie's kind of like, 'Oh, that's sort of weird you wouldn't lead with that,' while Aidan is just mad that Wyatt likes Kathy more. Carrie accepts these changes with the saintly grace she's applied to all things Aidan this season, but does warn him that she doesn't want him pestering her moody downstairs neighbor, Duncan (Jonathan Cake). Now, everyone who watches And Just Like That… can appreciate that Carrie and Duncan have a fun little friendship blossoming. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) even gets in trouble with Carrie when she insinuates they could be a thing. Carrie has built a close working relationship with the British writer, where they offer each other notes on their projects, but has adamantly kept things platonic. However, that doesn't stop Aidan from getting jealous. In this week's episode, the tensions between Carrie and Aidan finally come to the surface when Carrie calls Aidan out on plotting to meet and appraise Duncan. She complains about it to Seema (Sarita Choudhury), but also explains that she broke Aidan's trust decades ago when she cheated on him with Big (Chris Noth). Aidan's jealousy over Duncan sparks another argument about his inability to trust her in the here and now, despite all she's done for him (and the fact that he cheated on her with Kathy). During their fight, Carrie lets it slip that she was 100% in their rekindled relationship until she realized he still had trust issues. This freaks Aidan out, who needs to know if she's still 100% in the here and now. Carrie emotionally confesses that she gave him everything and it wasn't enough. Aidan admits he needs her 100% or nothing at all. They realize they are over. I, for one, am happy for Carrie. She gave Aidan more than her all. She transformed every part of her life to cater to his consistently changing needs. She easily forgave him for his transgressions, while he stubbornly held her to impossible standards. Now Carrie can move forward to her next chapter, free and clear. I'm also happy that And Just Like That... gave this momentous event the needledrop it deserved… And Just Like That Season 3 Episode 9 Ending Explained: Did Carrie and Aidan Break Up? What Taylor Swift Song is Playing on AJLT? Yes, Carrie and Aidan broke up! And I'm 99.99% sure they officially broke up for good. However, I thought that back in the Sex and the City days, so maybe in twenty years, Carrie and Aidan will get back together in yet another SATC spin-off show called 'I Couldn't Help But Wonder' that's set in a luxury retirement community. Who knows! But it definitely does seem like Carrie is back to her classic single gal ways. And Just Like That… Season 3 Episode 9 'Present Tense' ends with Ms. Bradshaw getting all dressed up to meet Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda, and Seema for cocktails like the good old days. While Carrie moves on with her life, the Taylor Swift song 'How Did It End?' plays. The song appears on the expanded version of The Tortured Poets Society, called The believe the song is about Swift's breakup with long-time love Joe Alwyn. The lyrics talk about conducting a 'post-mortem' on a relationship where 'they called it all off.' Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Society certainly feels like a great fit for Carrie Bradshaw at this point in her life. She's working on an historical fiction novel and flirting with a fellow artist, all while saying goodbye to one of her great loves. So what's next for Carrie? Hopefully Jonathan Cake's Duncan Reeves, if you catch my drift… And Just Like That… Season 3 Episode 10 will premiere on HBO MAX on Thursday, July 31. Solve the daily Crossword
