Kauaʻi bridge to see temporary closure June 3

LIHUE, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is notifying the Kauaʻi community about a closure of the Wailua Plantation Bridge on June 3. According to HDOT, the bridge has sustained damage to supportive structures on the bridge, with affected areas needing replacement so cars may traverse the bridge safely. Gov. Green to hold ceremony to honor Pride Month The bridge will see a full closure on June 3 from 8 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. the following day. If additional work is needed, then the bridge will also be closed on June 4 from 8 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. the next day. Steel plates will be placed over affected areas as a temporary fix until crews are able to properly secure the bridge's infrastructure. HONOLULU (KHON2) — Brand new restaurants and improvements are coming to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The Hawai'i Department of Transportation highlighted new improvements to Terminal 1 as part of a continuing effort to enhance the passenger experience for the traveling public. HNL takes off: Upgrades to modernize Honolulu's aging airport HDOT partnered with Hawaiian Airlines to unveil new restroom facilities and a breakroom for TSA employees. 'This project is more than just a construction milestone, it's a testament to the power of partnership,' said Monica Kobayashi, managing director for airport operations, Hawaiian Airlines. 'By working together, Hawaiian Airlines and the HDOT were able to pool resources, share expertise and deliver a project that benefits everyone who passes through this terminal. It's a model of collaboration that allows us to move faster, work smarter and achieve more than we could alone.' Kobayashi also added, 'Everybody here knows that our budget is focused on our runways and taxiways. We wanna make sure those areas are safe first before we start pushing money in different areas. But everybody's been seeing those small improvements that we've been making to the terminals to make sure the visitor experience is highlighted as well.' Additionally, HDOT and its food and beverage concessionaire partner, HMSHost, celebrated the opening of the first of two new Panda Express restaurants at HNL, with the second to be located in the food court in Terminal 2. The second location is set to open in August. HMSHost is also upgrading furniture at its food and beverage outlets in Terminal 1 and expects to open Waialua Café and Bar in the Mauka Terminal by the end of this year. 'We are extremely excited to bring our travelers a well-recognized and sought-after brand in Panda Express, delivering flavors that are a combination of Chinese roots with an American taste, serving dishes that are authentically American Chinese,' said Chris Kadohiro, director of operations for HMSHost. 'The addition of Panda Express in the interisland terminal, as well as the Terminal 2 location coming in August, will allow us to increase passenger satisfaction and provide them great comfort food as they travel.' HONOLULU (KHON2) — Calling all H-1 Freeway commuters. The Hawaii Department of Transportation urges you to plan accordingly for upcoming ramp closures. HDOT will close the westbound Aolele Street and Rodgers Boulevard on-ramps to the H-1 Freeway from the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), as well as the Airport off-ramp (Exit 16) from the westbound H-1 Airport Viaduct. H-1W to have full closure this weekend. What you need to know Work will begin on Tuesday, June 3 to Thursday, June 5, from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. This work is paired with the weekend closures on the H-1 Airport Viaduct. The upcoming closures are for concrete deck repairs as part of the repaving work on the westbound H-1 Airport Viaduct. Drivers will be detoured to Paiea Street to Nimitz Highway, where they may re-enter the westbound H-1 Freeway. Special duty police officers will be on-site assisting with safety procedures. The estimated completion date of this work is set for August. HONOLULU (KHON2) — State transportation officials are warning Oahu drivers to expect delays due to an uptick in road construction, especially along major corridors including the H-1 Freeway, Moanalua Freeway, and areas near the airport. Honolulu city council looks to use hotel tax to help lower projected sewer fee increase The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) reported 25 separate projects with lane closures along the H-1 Freeway alone during the week of May 10 to May 16. Additional work is also underway on the H-2 and Moanalua freeways. 'Probably one of our most impactful projects right now would be the H-1 Pearl City and Waimalu viaduct improvements,' said HDOT Communications Manager Shelly Kunishige. 'That closes up to four lanes Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. and is likely to continue through March 2027.' Other ongoing projects include: Airport Viaduct Improvements — Closing westbound lanes Tuesday through Monday, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., expected to finish by August 2025. Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project — Affects eastbound H-1 traffic on weekends and evenings, with completion anticipated in June. Moanalua Freeway Repaving — Between the H-3 and Fort Shafter overpass, targeted for completion by year's the frustrations for drivers, HDOT said there is a reason so many projects are happening simultaneously. 'All of this work has federal monies attached, so we do need to expend them while we have that funding authorization,' Kunishige said. 'We don't like to cause traffic, but we're trying to improve the roads and create long-lasting pavement so we don't have to do this for another 10 or 15 years.' Some drivers are feeling the strain. 'Kind of humbug,' said a Honolulu resident who asked to remain anonymous. 'They got to get 'em together, you know. Space 'em out. Maybe take a break sometime, do one project at a time.' An ʻAiea resident said she tries to plan ahead. 'I'm prepared, knowing that there's going to be road closures. I just time my appointments accordingly,' she said.
