Friends and industry colleagues based in Gauteng are expected to attend the memorial. The second of two memorial services for Oscar-winning actor Presley will be held on Thursday at the State Theatre in Pretoria. The award-winning actor passed away last week at the age of 40. Friends and industry colleagues based in Gauteng are expected to attend the memorial. Friend and former Generations actor Rantebeng Makapan was one of the speakers at another memorial service for the star earlier this week in the North West. Referring to Chweneyagae by his local nickname, Tobetsa, Makapan said the late actor was a people's person who would have wanted to be celebrated and not mourned. Melanie Bala on co-parenting after divorce from Zwai
Melanie and Zwai announced their divorce in 2017. Renowned radio personality Melanie Bala recently opened up about life after divorce and navigating co-parenting with her ex-husband, musician Zwai Bala. In 2017, Melanie and Zwai issued a joint statement announcing the end of their nearly 10-year marriage. They had tied the knot in 2008 and share two children — a son and a daughter — who were aged 10 and six at the time of the split. During a recent interview on Relebogile Mabotja's Podcast, Melanie spoke about the journey leading up to the divorce and how they have managed to maintain a healthy co-parenting dynamic. 'Divorce is not an overnight decision… In that process leading up to making the final decision to get a divorce, I think there is a part of you that starts to let go… A lot of grieving happens through that process. 'And it's the beginning of a different journey because, how do I navigate life without this person that I've been with for such a long time? You're going to make mistakes. You're going to mess up, but you give yourself grace to figure it out,' she said. ALSO READ: Nozipho Ntshangase's husband of 17 years marries second wife Melanie on co-parenting Melanie emphasised that when children are involved, separation is not easy. She said breaking the news of their divorce to the children was also difficult. 'To them, it very much came as a surprise… My son was upset, obviously, and then my daughter was upset after that. It's not a nice conversation to have, but we did it together. We sat them down and told them.' She added that she and Zwai make co-parenting work because they always put their children first. 'These kids didn't ask for this. And so I choose not to make them have to pick sides, or talk badly about their father, or cut off their entire family that they've known their whole lives. 'I feel like co-parenting works if the two people no longer have feelings for each other, or if you don't hate each other. When all those feelings are resolved, you can truly co-parent. It really works when you are emotionally mature, and you have truly ended and completed that part of your relationship, so that you are only co-parents.' Presley Chweneyagae: Mourners gathered at Mmabatho like they did in 2018 for HHP
Referring to Chweneyagae by his local nickname, Tobetsa, Makapan said the late actor was a people's person. The first memorial service of Presley Chweneyagae was hosted in his hometown of Mahikeng. Picture: Presley Oageng Chweneyagae/Facebook In his welcome note at the memorial service of actor Presley Chweneyagae, the mayor of Mahikeng, Tshepiso Mphehlo, reflected on the pinnacle of the province's art scene when Tsosti was released. 'That period was a pinnacle period for the arts and culture in Mahikeng,' shared Mphehlo. The memorial service is being held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre for the late 40-year-old actor, who passed away a week ago. This is the first of two memorial services expected this week. The other service will be held at Pretoria's State Theatre on Thursday for his friends and industry colleagues who are based in Gauteng. ALSO READ: 'Working with Presley and keeping a straight face is almost impossible' — industry mourns Chweneyagae 'Like we did for HHP' The mayor said that when the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi was released in 2005, Motswako — a rap style that blends Setswana rap lyrics with English — was at its height, with artists like HHP and Tuks in their prime. 'For us as youngsters, this provided hope. We had believed that challenges in our background could be overcome. We knew through their rise to stardom that we too will be called for greatness,' said the mayor, mentioning other artists from the province like Mo Molemi, among others. 'Today, like we did in 2018, in this very hall for HHP, we are gathered here to bid farewell once again to a torchbearer of hope. Through the decades, we've seen him illuminate our TV screens with talent.' Real name Jabulani Tsambo, HHP died of suicide in 2018. ALSO READ: Presley Chweneyagae's family reveals cause of death, memorial, and funeral details 'A people's person' Friend and former Generations actor Rantebeng Makapan was one of the speakers on the day. Referring to Chweneyagae by his local nickname, Tobetsa, Makapan said the late actor was a people's person. 'Tobetsa was able to gather people. Tobetsa was a people's person. There are many people who wanted to get this opportunity to speak about their experience with Tobetsa, but did not have the opportunity to come here. 'It's not that you were undermined [or] ignored…it's just that the programme was set the way it was. I wasn't even supposed to be standing here, the person who was meant to stand here was unable to attend,' said Makapan. The actor, whom many viewers will remember as Thomas on Generations, said he spent most of his time with Chweneyagae in Pretoria, where they first met after being introduced by a mutual friend. 'Even through the pain we're feeling right now, we all know he made us laugh. He was a people's person who was able to be, [to] chill with us. He didn't care to chill at a five-star place, even if we chilled under the tree, he never judged people.' Makapan said he went to Chweneyagae's house after the news broke of his passing, and that the deceased's wife said he should be celebrated instead of mourned. 'He did so many things for us to come here and cry for him.' NOW READ: Nozipho Ntshangase's husband of 17 years marries second wife

Women on Farms Project calls for urgent ban on cyanamide pesticide
Farmworkers Women farm workers and dwellers march to Philagro's office in Somerset West to hand over a memorandum demanding a complete and immediate end to the production, export and use of cyanamide/Dormex for agricultural purposes amid serious health concerns. Image: Supplied AGRICULTURE Minister John Steenhuisen has yet to disclose how his office would deal with increasing calls for a complete and immediate end to the production, export and use of cyanamide/Dormex for agricultural purposes, amid serious health risks to farmworkers. Cyanamide, a Highly Hazardous Pesticide (HHP), according to Women on Farms Project (WFP) had lost its approval in the European Union since 2008, but is still produced by Alzchem in Germany from where it is exported to countries in the global South, including South Africa. In South Africa, cyanamide is distributed by Philagro on behalf of Alzchem, according to WFP. A memorandum by Women on Farms project is accepted by Schalk Reynolds from Philagro. Image: Supplied Scores of women farm workers and dwellers recently marched to Philagro's office in Somerset West to hand over a memorandum for the attention of Alzchem Group AG, to highlight their concerns. 'In 2019, WFP, a feminist South African non-governmental organisation, undertook a desk-top study which found that 67 pesticides that are already banned in Europe are still exported to and used in South Africa. Since the launch of its Double Standards campaign, WFP has been lobbying the South African government to ban these pesticides, while also demanding that European companies like Alzchem stop the production and export of pesticides that have been banned in the European Union because they are so harmful to human health. "Farmwomen have stated that it is unjust that farm workers in South Africa, the majority of whom are women, are exposed to pesticides that have been banned in Europe," said WFP. Next Stay Close ✕ WFP lamented that many farm women were exposed to Dormex/cyanamide without proper training, no proper protective equipment, were also not guaranteed water to wash their hands or even a toilet to relieve themselves while working. 'The European Food and Safety Authority (2010) found that even when proper protective equipment, masks, gloves, visors, hoods and rubber boots are used; operator exposure estimates exceeded acceptable levels by 6433%. The situation in South Africa is particularly dire as there is widespread non-compliance with the South African occupational health and safety legislation and a persistent lack of effective enforcement by labour inspectors,' the organisation added. They want a formal meeting with Alzchem to discuss their concerns.

Bill Gates to open Gates Foundation office in Singapore
That same focus carried through to the wider PAS programme. This year, the Philanthropy Asia Alliance launched two new Communities of Action: one tackling non-communicable diseases, the other advancing a just energy transition in Asia. The health-focused initiative, Health for Healthy People (HHP), brings together regional partners to address preventable deaths in Southeast Asia, particularly in maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition (MNCHN), alongside infectious disease. The Gates Foundation is among the founding leads. It's a move that reinforces the Foundation's decision to open an office in Singapore. Alongside partners like the Institute of Philanthropy, Quantedge Advancement Initiative, Tanoto Foundation, and Temasek Foundation, it is helping to shape a coordinated regional approach to healthcare grounded in shared infrastructure, pooled resources, and scalable impact. Director for South & Southeast Asia at the Foundation Hari Menon said: 'As the Gates Foundation marks 25 years of working to advance health and equity around the world, we are reminded that lasting progress is only possible through strong partnerships.' The takeaway was clear: Singapore, and the region around it, isn't just where solutions are being applied but also where they're being built.
