HSBC appoints John McDonald as Chief Marketing Officer

HSBC has appointed John McDonald as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) with effect 1 October 2025. McDonald was the Group CMO at Swiss-based multinational investment bank and financial services firm UBS. In this newly created role, McDonald will bring together the Marketing and Brand functions across HSBC's four primary businesses under unified leadership. He will be responsible for shaping and delivering HSBC's marketing, branding, client engagement across the bank's four business areas of International Wealth and Premier Banking, Corporate and Institutional Banking, Hong Kong and the UK. During his 25-year career as a global marketing leader, John has worked with the world's leading brands such as Mastercard, American Express and British Airways, and led key accounts at Publicis Groupe and WPP across the Americas, Asia and Europe. Sharing his thoughts on a LinkedIn post, John McDonald, CMO, HSBC, said, 'It's a pivotal time to join — as HSBC reshapes itself to become simpler, more agile, and more focused on the needs of its clients. I can't wait to contribute to that transformation and build on the incredible momentum my future colleagues around the world have already created.' McDonald added, 'I was born in Clapham South, raised in Wembley, went to school in Barnet, and started my first proper job in Canary Wharf (at Ogilvy, when they still had a speedboat you could use — it was a very different time). My parents still live in North London. But as the years passed, I stopped calling London home. In truth, I didn't think I'd ever have reason to do so again. But, if I've learned anything, it's that life rarely follows the path we expect. So I couldn't be happier to be coming home — to lead a truly iconic global brand and take on what is, for me, the opportunity of a lifetime.' He joins HSBC at a pivotal time, given its renewed strategy to become a more simple, agile and focused bank to better serve its customers. Commenting on the appointment, Barry O'Byrne, CEO, International Wealth and Premier Banking at HSBC, said, 'HSBC's ambition is to become the most trusted bank globally, putting our customers at the heart of everything we do. We are excited to welcome John whose depth and range of experience will be invaluable – not only as we increase our focus on wealth, but as we accelerate growth, increase market share and build an even more distinctive brand that resonates with current and future clients across our businesses and markets globally.' Recent highlights of HSBC's brand, marketing and client engagements include its Global Brand Campaign including the 'Originals' content series with Bloomberg, Conde Nast and Vox Media, a refreshed Global Airport strategy resulting in media presence across 23 global airports. The bank has also invested in strategic brand partnerships such as: the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, HSBC Championships in the UK and the LIV Golf Global Partnership – all alongside an existing portfolio across sports, arts and culture. In 2025, HSBC relaunched its Private Bank and Premier services, in addition to hosting a series of wealth Summits, including their Flagship Global Investment Summit. The bank also rebranded the newly created Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) business. Additionally, HSBC recently marked its 160th year with celebratory events, activations and digital engagement campaigns to enhance client interaction and brand presence.

Cameron Norrie's Wimbledon press conference takes odd Emma Raducanu turn with dating question

Cameron Norrie certainly didn't see this question coming. Fresh off his third-round win Friday against Italy's Mattia Bellucci at Wimbledon, the 29-year-old appeared taken aback in his press conference when a media member asked if he was involved with fellow Brit Emma Raducanu, whose love life has garnered much attention at the tournament. 'Apart from everyone here loving tennis, some of the gossip has been about who Emma Raducanu is dating. Can I ask if you're dating her?' a reporter asked Norrie, who replied, 'Sorry?' Advertisement Norrie has been in a long-term relationship with girlfriend Louise Jacobi since 2019, according to reports. Rumors about Raducanu's personal life have been swirling since June, when the 2021 U.S. Open champ cheered on world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz during his semi-final HSBC Championships win over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut at Queen's Club. Raducanu reached the third round of this year's tournament, falling to top-seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (8), 6-4. Both Norrie and Alcaraz play in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Norrie faces Chile's Nicolás Jarry, while Alcaraz, seeking a Wimbledon three-peat, takes on Andrey Rublev of Russia.

Carlos Alcaraz relationship challenges, Jannik Sinner behaviour and ban reason

Carlos Alcaraz is chasing a third straight Wimbledon title after back-to-back final victories over Novak Djokovic - but what else do we know about the Spaniard away from the courts? Carlos Alcaraz is eyeing his third consecutive Wimbledon win after taking down Novak Djokovic in the finals of the past two years. The Spanish sensation has been in formidable form, notably rallying from behind to clinch the French Open against Jannik Sinner in what was an electrifying match. Having also lifted the trophy at Queen's Club for the second time with the HSBC Championships under his belt, Alcaraz is aiming for another Wimbledon victory that could catapult him into the annals of tennis history at the tender age of 22. ‌ Yet, despite the buzz surrounding his success streak, Alcaraz maintains his eyes are only set on the prize, not the history books. Prior to Wimbledon, he said: "I'm coming here thinking that I really want to win the title, I really want to lift the trophy. I'm not thinking about how many players have done it, winning three Wimbledons in a row." ‌ Off the court, Alcaraz's life is just as scrutinised, especially regarding personal matters such as his love life and his relationships with other professionals. Here's what we know about the Spanish sensation... Girlfriend challenges Speaking with the Sunday Times last year, Alcaraz candidly revealed the challenges of finding love amidst the constant travel demanded by the sport. He said: "I am single. "I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time." He adopted a similar tone with Vogue the year before too, telling the publication: "It's hard to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world." Sporting rivalry Reflecting on Alcaraz's triumph over Sinner at the French Open, 1989 Roland Garros winner Michael Chang told Clay Tennis: "The generation that we followed was very competitive, [players] didn't really talk to each other. Alcaraz and Sinner have a very healthy respect for one another. Different than in years past, like a McEnroe-Connors or a McEnroe-[Ivan] Lendl. There was no friendship there." ‌ He added: " [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal changed the culture in the locker room. On court, it's business. You want to play your best and beat your opponent, but off court they were kind to everyone, whether you were world No. 2 or No. 100 in doubles. "Roger, Rafa, and even Novak are responsible for that transformation. They treated everyone the same and were kind. I think that respect has carried over to the current generation because they respect everyone." ‌ Party ban Speaking to El Laguero, Juan Carlos Ferrero explained that his partying plans after the French Open may have been toned down through his guidance. He explained: "Yesterday, I told him to have a good time, that he deserved it, but to remember he's a tennis player at all times. "We know how he is and these days do him good. When he returns, he comes back with a clear head, renewed. It's no longer about the word 'party', but about disconnecting. Being with his friends and not thinking about tennis and being a normal 22-year-old, and returning to work with enthusiasm." Alcaraz himself is no stranger to the nightlife, candidly speaking of his fondness for partying in his Netflix special, 'Carlos Alcaraz: My Way'. He said (via the Express): "Look, in Ibiza... I'm not going to lie to you. It's about partying and going out. I went there to let loose. I don't know if it's right to say it that way, but I went out. "I made the most of it. On my return, of course, I won at Queen's and Wimbledon. I'm not saying I won because of the party, but those days did me good. And if things go well, I have to repeat."

Nick Kyrgios claims Emma Raducanu is in a Wimbledon love triangle with two stars

Emma's love life has become the talk of WImbledon and now Nick Kyrgios couldn't resist stirring the pot Nick Kyrgios has mischievously claimed Emma Raducanu is in the middle of a 'love triangle' with fellow tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper. The Aussie tennis ace made the bold comment with a grin while speaking on talkSPORT, where he's now working after being dropped by the BBC. ‌ Emma and Carlos have been the subject of light-hearted romance rumours recently, after the pair were spotted together multiple times from practice courts at Wimbledon to courtside support at the HSBC Championships. ‌ The two 22-year-olds, who are set to play mixed doubles together at the US Open, also recently joined forces as brand ambassadors for Evian but when asked about the buzz around their friendship, Emma laughed it off and made it clear there's no romance involved. 'I'm really happy to be playing with him… we're just good friends,' she said. That didn't stop Kyrgios from stirring the pot this week, cheekily telling listeners: 'I don't know, I think it's a love triangle! Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They're fighting over Raducanu I think, I'm not sure.' Referring to Emma's smiley Wimbledon appearances, he added: 'I think the outside [she looks happy]. I don't know who's making her happy. The tennis world loves a love story, they love to try and put two [players] together. But Emma is number one British female player at the moment, she's doing fairly well. 'Obviously, winning a grand slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectations from the outside world. But, you know, as long as she's happy." Earlier this week, Emma kicked off her Wimbledon 2025 campaign with a solid 6-3 6-3 win over fellow Brit Mimi Xu. She's now set to face reigning 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the next round. ‌ Meanwhile, Jack Draper begins his tournament against Sebastian Baez, and Emma is already off the mark after a tough battle with Fabio Fognini. During a pre-Wimbledon press conference, Emma once again dismissed the swirling romance rumours with a laugh. Speaking about her upcoming doubles pairing with Alcaraz, she said: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian.' ‌ 'Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' READ MORE: Emma Raducanu addresses Carlos Alcaraz romance rumours with four-word answer When the inevitable question about romance came up, she smiled and replied: 'We're just good friends.' The moderator swiftly wrapped up the topic, with Emma joking: 'Way to wrap up!' ‌ Speaking fondly about their four-year friendship, she explained: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was kind of the first time I started getting to know him… I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage… we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young… when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection.' While the so-called 'love triangle' remains nothing more than playful tennis gossip, it's safe to say Nickhas successfully stirred the Wimbledon pot.
