Woman, man escape injury in three-vehicle crash near Serendah
HULU SELANGOR: A woman and a man survived a horrific accident involving three vehicles at Kilometre 39 of the Kuala Lumpur–Ipoh road near Serendah yesterday. Acting district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Asri Mohd Yunus said the crash occurred at around 4.35pm and involved a Proton Saga, a trailer, and a tanker lorry. "Preliminary investigations found that the car, driven by a 31-year-old woman, was travelling from Selayang to Batang Kali. Upon reaching the location, the Proton Saga was rear-ended by a tanker lorry driven by a 57-year-old man. "The impact caused the heavy vehicle to veer into the opposite lane and brush against the trailer," he said in a statement today. Mohd Asri confirmed that none of the drivers sustained injuries. He added that police are urging any witnesses or those with information about the accident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

112 Malayan tapirs killed in road accidents from 2020 to 2024
HULU SELANGOR: A total of 112 Malayan tapirs were killed in road accidents nationwide between 2020 and last year. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, said the latest data from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) shows that only around 700 to 800 Malayan tapirs remain in their natural habitats. He said the ministry has implemented various initiatives and innovations to address this issue. 'We have installed yellow transverse bars, LED wildlife crossing signboards and solar amber lights in Gerik, Perak and Kedah. 'We are also open to expanding these measures to other areas, including in Selangor, where cases of tapir deaths have been reported,' he told reporters after officiating the World Tapir Day celebration at the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Sungai Dusun, Kuala Kubu Baharu, here today. World Tapir Day is celebrated on April 27 each year to raise public awareness of the importance of conserving the species, as well as to recognise ongoing and past conservation efforts. Commenting on attempts to breed the Malayan tapir, Nik Nazmi said the ministry, through Perhilitan, will continue to intensify conservation efforts through both in-situ (in natural habitats) and ex-situ (outside natural habitats, such as conservation centres) approaches. 'In addition, habitat protection will be strengthened through the construction of wildlife crossings at the Sungai Deka Ecological Corridor in Terengganu, the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor in Pahang and the Gerik Ecological Corridor. 'We have already begun work on the construction of the National Tapir Conservation Centre at the state park in the Kenaboi Forest Reserve, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan,' he said.

PKR polls: Nik Nazmi files protest over Setiawangsa division election results
HULU SELANGOR: PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad confirmed he had sent a protest letter to the party's Central Election Committee regarding several issues related to the Setiawangsa division head election results. "I have sent a protest letter (to the committee) and we will wait for the response. "There is also a Central Leadership Council (CEC) meeting today, so we will just wait for the decision they will announce," he said. Nik Nazmi, who is also Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister, said this when met by reporters after officiating the World Tapir Day 2025 celebration at the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Sungai Dusun, Kuala Kubu Baharu, here today. In the April 19 election, the Setiawangsa member of parliament failed to defend the Setiawangsa division head position after losing to actor and film director Datuk Afdlin Shauki, by securing 563 votes while Afdlin obtained 631 votes. Yesterday, the committee's chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the status of the protests involving the election of several PKR divisions in the 2025 PKR Election would be announced next week. Nik Nazmi had previously said that the losses at the branch level would not deter his spirit in his bid to defend his vice-president post. He is among eight candidates contesting for the vice-president post. Apart from Nik Nazmi, others who have announced their intention to defend the post include Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and Nurul Izzah Anwar. Also in the race for the post are Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan and PKR deputy secretary-general Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan. Earlier today, Bayan Baru member of parliament Sim Tze Tzin announced his bid for the vice-president post. In a posting on Facebook, he said he decided to contest the post after 26 years in the party, to help PKR president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim eradicate poverty and elevate Malaysia to a high-income nation by 2030. — BERNAMA
