Haidar tells Berri all Shiite ministers will attend Wednesday's Cabinet meeting

BEIRUT — Following last week's walkout by all of Cabinet's Shiite ministers, Labor Minister Mohammad Haidar met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday to assure him that all said ministers would be in attendance at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting. Ministers Tamara Elzein (Amal), Mohammad Haidar (Hezbollah), and Rakan Nassereddine (Hezbollah) followed by Shiite minister Fadi Makki (not affiliated with either party), walked out of Thursday's meeting during which Cabinet discussed a U.S. plan for Hezbollah's disarmament. Following their exit, Cabinet adopted the plan, a decision which the party immediately announced its categorical rejection of. Minister Yassine Jaber (Amal), who was not in attendance at the meeting, is the fifth minister who Haidar confirmed would be present on Wednesday, quelling any concern that the ministers would quit government over the issue. Haidar also updated Berri on his talks last week with the Iraqi government, telling him that Iraq would be send 50,000 tons of wheat by ship as part of a 300,000-ton wheat donation for Lebanon. Berri and Haidar also agreed steps would be taken to resolve the problems recently faced by Lebanese contractors in Iraq. Berri also reviewed the security situation with army chief Gen. Rodolphe Haykal. The army is expected to present a plan for the disarmament of militias to Cabinet before the end of August.

The four-day event at the scenic Taman Tumbina, which concluded last Sunday, has proven once again that this 'nature-meets-culture' celebration is a must-visit spot in Bintulu. 'This achievement cements Pesta Tumbina's status as an iconic festival for Bintulu,' said Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) deputy chairman Dato Haidar Asghar Khan at the closing ceremony, also thanking all the visitors, participants, exhibitors and volunteers who had made this year's programme 'truly spectacular'. Haidar added that future editions would be promoted even more aggressively through social media campaigns, strategic collaborations and extended publicity beyond this division. 'Plans are already in motion to expand activities including the much-loved Tumbina Night Walk with dazzling creative lighting themes such as Insectopia Jungle, Animal and Forest,' he said in Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report. The Bintulu Port Authority (BPA), in an effort to make night activities safer and more enjoyable, is piloting a project to install lighting along the jungle-walk route. Visitors pose in front of giant hibiscus replicas at Taman Tumbina Bintulu. 'With proper illumination, our Night Walk can be both safer and more magical,' said BPA acting general manager Capt Zakhir Khan Yusop, adding that the upgrade should reach completion within six months after the launch, with BPA's financial backing. This year's Tumbina Festival was a kaleidoscope of family-friendly fun – with activities ranging from biodrama competitions, colouring contests and bird-singing shows, to children' fashion parades, cosplay, and exhibitions of flora, fauna and handicrafts. It offered a perfect blend of entertainment, education and the wonders of nature. The closing ceremony also included a symbolic handing-over of the BDA and Sarawak flags to Mohamad Daud Ahmad and Awang Mohadir Awang Bujang, who would represent Sarawak at the 39th National Independence Poetry Recitation Contest in Melaka, to be running from Aug 15 to 17. Haidar (fifth left), Muhamad Yakup (centre) and others jointly perform the cake-cutting ceremony. BINTULU (Aug 9): The third edition of Pesta Tumbina 2025 is expected to attract between 30,000 and 35,000 visitors this year, with a packed line-up of events and competitions running from Thursday night until this Sunday at Taman Tumbina. Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) deputy chairman Dato Haidar Khan Asghar Khan said the public is invited to join in the remaining nights of the celebration, organised by BDA in conjunction with Taman Tumbina's 34th anniversary. Since its debut in 2023, Pesta Tumbina has recorded encouraging growth in participation. Last year's edition drew over 23,000 visitors, matching the attendance of this year's Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching. 'This year, we are confident of an even greater turnout, with organisers targeting between 30,000 and 35,000 visitors,' Haidar said when officiating the festival on Thursday. The festival features a wide range of activities to appeal to all ages, including keychain painting, colouring contests, a bird-singing competition, children's fashion show, cosplay, batik workshops, culinary arts showcases, and the Halal Greenovate for Community programme. 'These activities are designed to enliven the celebration, encourage community participation, and align with the government's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals,' he said, while expressing appreciation to all parties involved. He also expressed gratitude to the Bintulu Port Authority (BPA), the festival's main strategic partner for the second consecutive year, and wished them continued success. He further acknowledged Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) as a strategic partner for last week's Bintulu Marathon 2025. 'I call on other corporations in Bintulu to step forward and work with BDA to organise events and programmes that benefit the local community,' he added. Haidar stressed that BDA's role goes beyond development planning, with a strong commitment to making Bintulu a liveable and sustainable city that residents can be proud of. He also reaffirmed BDA's efforts to further beautify the town. Among those present were his wife, Datin Hasliza Abdullah; BDA general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari; Bintulu deputy resident Abang Zainuddin Abang Turkey; BDA deputy general manager Abdul Rahim Abdullah; Bintulu district officer Awang Mohammed Nizam Awang Ali Bohan; BPA senior manager (Commercial and Planning) Khartina Abu Bakar representing BPA general manager Capt Zakhir Khan Yusop; Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPM) Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences dean Associate Prof Dr Noorasmah Mohd; and BDA assistant general manager (Environment) Prie Nyangan. An 18-year-old jobseeker was arrested after entering a Taco Bell in Michigan on Thursday, flashing what appeared to be a handgun and making threats when staff did not respond to his employment inquiries, Dearborn Heights police said. Newsweek contacted the restaurant via telephone, as well as Taco Bell's head office and the Dearborn Police Department via email outside normal working hours on Friday for comment. The Context According to a report by the U.S. Department of Labor, in June, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) increased by 190,000 to 1.6 million, largely offsetting a decrease the prior month. The long-term unemployed accounted for 23.3 percent of all unemployed people. A report by Fox News showed Taco Bell advertising that they are actively hiring. Smith Collection/Gado/What To Know Police say the man, frustrated by the lack of response to his job inquiries at the restaurant on Telegraph Road near Ann Arbor Trail, showed up at the restaurant. "He came in pretty upset that he's been reaching out to that Taco Bell for the last week or so, trying to communicate on his cellphone and he wasn't getting any response from them," Dearborn Heights Police Chief Ahmed Haidar said, as reported by ABC News. Once the teenager arrived, he lifted his shirt to reveal what appeared to be a pistol, threatening and scaring employees who thought the gun was real. The man reportedly also overturned a table before fleeing. "[He] brandished a weapon at the time. Two times, exited, came back in, flipped over a table," Haidar said, according to ABC News. The restaurant locked its doors during the incident, pushing customers to use the drive-through as a precaution. No injuries were reported. Police handcuffed and arrested the man a few blocks away and recovered a BB gun. Officers later determined that the weapon was a modified BB gun resembling a Glock, Fox News reported. Haidar said the suspect has no prior criminal history and expressed hope that the young man would learn from the mistake and avoid entering the legal system over such an incident. What People Are Saying Dearborn Heights Police Chief Ahmed Haidar, as reported by Fox News: "[He] doesn't have a history. Sounds like he's an 18-year-old kid that's on a downslide right now. He's just trying to find a job, trying to do right. Made a poor decision." What Happens Next Authorities are continuing their investigation. Even brandishing a BB gun can lead to serious charges. Investigators plan to forward charges of felony assault and brandishing a firearm to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Fox reported. While the incident could carry serious consequences, Haidar said police will work to ensure the man receives the support he needs, ABC News reported. The chief said a request for charges would be submitted to the prosecutor's office by Friday, noting that the final decision on any charges rests with the prosecutor, Fox reported.
