Ex-Rangers man in 'pole position' to land surprise new job
Gattuso departed his role as boss of Croatian top-flight outfit Hajduk Split just five days ago. Read more: He now looks set to seal a quick-fire return to football. Indeed, Italy recently parted ways with Luciano Spalletti, despite a 2-0 win over Moldova on Monday. Gattuso is in 'pole position' to replace the 66-year-old in the national team dugout, claims Gattuso has previously taken charge of a host of clubs including Sion, Palermo, Crete, Pisa, AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille. He spent just over a year at Rangers as a teenager, making 45 appearances across which he scored five goals. Gattuso won a World Cup with Italy as a player, and he now looks likely to take charge of his country in a rather surprising switch. Elsewhere, former Rangers chief Ross Wilson is reportedly among the candidates under consideration for a vacancy at Newcastle United. The Daily Mail claims the Nottingham Forest sporting director is in the frame for the same position at St James' Park. Wilson, 41, has been in post at Forest since 2023 after he departed Ibrox. He held a similar position previously at Southampton.

A brief statement said: " We thank you once again for everything and wish you the best in the rest of your life and coaching career." Gattuso led Split to third in the SuperSport HNL division, finishing two points behind champions Rijeka and second placed Dinamo Zagreb. They looked on course to win their first title in 20 years starting their first 11 games unbeaten, but a poor run of form saw them relinquish their grip on the title. Gattuso took charge of 43 games, winning 20 of them and losing nine. Reports suggest he could now return to his native Italy, with Fiorentina and newly promoted Pisa looking for a new head coach. The Italian is known for his fiery temperament on the park as well as off it. He never shirked a challenge whether that on was the pitch or in the studio as an incredible bust-up in March illustrated. Gattuso was scheduled to do a live interview with Croatian sports channel MAXSport1. But things quickly unravelled. Shock moment ex-Rangers star Rino Gattuso tells his own player to F... OFF during fiery press conference Gattuso refused to shake the hand of Josko Jelicic, a former Hajduk Split star who also played for Sevilla and Dinamo Zagreb and earned a cap for his country whilst playing for Hajduk. The AC Milan legend told Jelicic "I won't give an answer to you, you speak too much" and made a mouthing gesture with his hand. Gattuso was speaking in English but Jelicic responded in Spanish, saying "You played very bad!" The pair were shouting over each other before the presenter had to step in to defuse the situation.
