Improvements to begin on Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course

May 30—Hall of Fame Course Design will begin to update and improve the Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course, located at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex, next week. The Decatur City Council approved a resolution Monday to allow Mayor Tab Bowling to sign a contract with the company. Hall of Fame first provided the city with a description of the scope of work in January. "It's basically just giving the course a refresh and making it more playable and safer," said Lavone Wolfe, owner of Hall of Fame Course Design. "We hope that it will help it get a lot more use." Wolfe estimated the project will take between four and eight weeks, depending on weather conditions. The scope of work contract estimates the project's total cost to be $114,312. The city received a grant for $100,000 from Alabama Mountains, Rivers and Valleys. The additional $14,000 will come from the Community Development grant-matching budget. "We have a ton of quality of life, recreation projects going on, so I think it shows that not everything is a $52 million rec center," said Councilman Kyle Pike. "Some things are as small as a $100,000 improvement to a disc golf course." In February, the city broke ground on the new Wilson Morgan Park recreation center, the largest Parks and Recreation project in progress. Pike said the disc golf course update is another way to support the varying hobbies of Decatur residents. Wolfe will focus improvements primarily on holes 11 through 18, including walkways. Updates will include installing new concrete tee pads, refurbishing the targets, adding new signs and removing boulders. The improvements will make the course more navigable, safer and easier to play on, Wolfe said. Players have requested upgrades to the course in recent years, largely because of the difficulty seeing targets and walking through the course. "It's to the point that it really needs it," Wolfe said. Hall of Fame first installed the Flying Dragon Course in 2012. Wolfe, a Disc Golf Hall of Fame inductee, has designed or built more than 78 courses in the Southeast. Brad Phillips, Decatur's director of Information Systems, is an avid disc golfer. He enjoys traveling to different disc golf courses in the area and spoke highly of Wolfe's work. The disc golf community in north Alabama has been on the rise in recent years, Phillips said. "With (these updates), I expect the playing on that course to go way up," Wolfe said. Decatur has two other disc golf courses: the Outback, at Central Park, and Riverside, at Rhodes Ferry Park. — or 256-340-2437

Dan Campbell not worried about Ragnow, Anzalone missing the Lions OTAs

Dan Campbell not worried about Ragnow, Anzalone missing the Lions OTAs The Detroit Lions are holding voluntary OTAs this week, and Friday marked the first opportunity for the media to observe practice. We also got to talk with head coach Dan Campbell prior to the afternoon session. Before fielding questions, Campbell preemptively noted that not every Lions veteran is in attendance for the OTAs. "We only have two guys who aren't here right now," Campbell stated. "I know who they are, I know where they are. I talked to them and we're all good." The two, whom Campbell did not name, are linebacker Alex Anzalone and center Frank Ragnow. Both are away from the team with perceived contractual desires, though that has not explicitly been stated by either player. Ragnow was the highest-paid center in the NFL when he signed his contract extension back in 2021, but that deal runs out after 2026. Ragnow is now fourth in the center pecking order in terms of average annual salary, and none of his salary in 2025 or 2026 is guaranteed. The 29-year-old Ragnow remains an elite pivot. Anzalone, now 31, is entering the final year of his three-year, $18.75 million contract, with the 2026 season being a void year on the deal. He's due $6 million in 2025 but none of that salary is guaranteed. With the OTAs being voluntary, there is no issue with either missing the workouts. Campbell made that very clear in his comments. The first mandatory activities aren't until training camp, which will kick off in July. The mandatory minicamp slated for early June has been canceled due to the Lions' inclusion in the Hall of Fame game.

Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. gets 24-hour security after death threats against family

Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. gets 24-hour security after death threats against family Show Caption Hide Caption Pete Rose now eligible for Hall of Fame after years of ineligibility USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale discusses Pete Rose now being eligible for the Hall of Fame and what it means for the steroid era players. Sports Pulse Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. is getting 24-hour security after receiving online death threats directed at his family. McCullers, who returned to the mound at the beginning of May after missing nearly two years due to injury, told the Associated Press that his 5-year-old daughter overheard a conversation he was with having with his wife about the threats and asked him what was going on. 'She asked me when I came home: 'Daddy like what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?'' McCullers said. 'So, those conversations are tough to deal with.' The Astros contacted MLB security and the Houston Police Department about the threats, and team owner Jim Crane hired 24-hour security for the family after McCullers asked what could be done to protect his family. After McCullers' start on May 10, giving up seven runs in the first inning while recording only one out, Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters about the online abuse that the 31-year-old starter had received that night. "There are people who are threatening his life and the life of his kids because of his performance tonight," Espada said. "It's very unfortunate that we have to deal with this – after all he's done for this city, for this team. … I've got kids, too. And it really drives me nuts that we have to deal with this." McCullers helped the Astros win World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, posting a 3.47 ERA in 72⅔ career postseason innings. 'I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with,' McCullers said on May 10. 'There have been many, many threats over the years aimed at me mostly ... But I think bringing kids into the equation, threatening to find them or next time they see us in public they're going to stab my kids to death … things like that are tough to hear as a dad.' Threats and abuse directed at players and their families have received increased attention in recent years, with many of the incidents tied to angry sports gamblers. "It gets ugly really quickly. It's scary, and it's sad," relief pitcher Paul Sewald told USA TODAY Sports in 2024. "It used to be fans who were upset because you blew the game for the team, but now it's gambling... They just care about their bets, and we're talking about money they don't have that they are losing. So, it's a very scary spot." Earlier in May, Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks – a cancer survivor – spoke out about the comments he received after a rough outing. "Just as an FYI: Threats against my life and my wife's life are horrible and cruel. You need help," Hendriks posted to his Instagram story. "Leaving comments to tell me to commit suicide and how you wish I died of cancer is disgusting and vile."
