Almost half of people don't wash their hands after using hospital toilets
It's one of the simplest steps in stopping germs from spreading – but nearly half of hospital toilet users are failing to wash their hands, a new study has found. Researchers at the University of Surrey put sensors on toilet and sink pipes to monitor hygiene behaviours at a hospital in Denmark. Over the roughly five-month period, they found that 43.7% of users did not wash their hands after using the loo. The figure, which jumped to 61.8% on some of the weeks, has raised the alarm about hygiene practices that some might have assumed had become commonplace after the pandemic. Dr Pablo Pereira Doel from the University of Surrey said people failing to wash their hands could 'directly affect patient safety' in hospitals. People were especially bad at washing their hands at the start and end of the day, as well as during mealtimes. NHS guidance says hand washing is 'one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and others from illnesses'. The advice hit the headlines at the start of the pandemic when then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the nation to 'wash your hands for 20 seconds or more'. Professor Benjamin Gardner, from the University of Surrey, said: 'Strategies that raise awareness at the crucial point in a bathroom visit and easily understood messaging about how to wash effectively – like singing Happy Birthday twice over – can help people form handwashing habits that last.' The study took place at Bispebjerg hospital in Copenhagen, recording 2,636 over the course of 19 weeks. More Trending Professor Carrie Newlands, also of the University of Surrey, added the latest findings are 'not surprising'. 'Even simple behaviours like handwashing can lapse without reinforcement. 'In hospitals, lapses like these can have serious consequences – for patients and for the wider healthcare system. The single stars have both had their hearts broken in recent years. Gethin's engagement to Katherine Jenkins was called off in 2011 and he's had a string of short relationships since. Gethin and Helen first sparked rumours of a possible romance in March when they both took part in a 24-hour roller skate challenge for Comic Relief which raised £34 million for charity. Gethin has publicly praised Helen's resilience as he gushed about how he loved spending time with her. While Helen publicly said of Gethin: "My dear @gethinjonesc... You are some man. I don't publicly say often enough how much love and respect I have for you my friend because I assume it is well known, but for the record you're a legend and I am beyond grateful to have you by my side on the rink, the sofa and beyond.' So if Helen has found love again with Gethin it would be some happy news. And it certainly looks like it's heading that way. A source told MailOnline: "Helen and Gethin have an extremely close working relationship and there's a feeling in recent months their friendship has blossomed into a deeper connection. They're both keen to keep a lid on it to avoid public scrutiny, but there's no denying their closeness both on and off screen."

The Batman Begins star made a rare public appearance as he went to lunch at the River Cafe with Fast and Furious actor, Vin, who turns 58 next week. Michael kept it classy in a black suit with a dark blue shirt, black trousers and comfortable black shoes. Vin, who has been friends with Michael for three decades, was by his side as they went to the popular A-list hotsput for food. Michael's partner Shakira, 78, and Vin's girlfriend Paloma Jimenez, 41, joined the duo for the outing. In pictures obtained by the Metro, Vin was seen rocking a casual light blue polo shirt with white trousers and trainers. The group were filming for an upcoming documentary about Michael and a camera was seen placed on a tripod near the table for the two-hour meal. The group even sang Happy Birthday Diesel before tucking into dessert ahead of Vin's 58th birthday. Vin and Michael have been working on a project called Mark and Maurice. Vin took to social media at the end of June to announce the indie project along with a picture of him posing with Michael. He said: "It's crazy to see so many of you just discovering Kaulder…" referencing his character in The Last Witch Hunter, which he starred in with Michael in 2015. "The response from people discovering it now is surreal – getting to work alongside one of my dearest friends and seeing people connect with that story years later… That's really the magic of this business. "Michael and I have been close friends for decades. He came into my life after I had lost a childhood friend who became a New York City police officer and lost his life in the line of duty – one of my personal reasons for filming that infamous New York detective. "Somehow Michael's friendship was healing and loving, and I've been blessed to have him in my life. Over a year ago, Michael and I started working on an independent project called Mark and Maurice. I can't wait to share what we've been up to." Michael once opened up about feeling "fed up" over never winning an Academy Award in the leading actor category. Despite being nominated four times over a 30 year period, he hasn't ever been awarded Best Actor in a Leading Role at the film awards ceremony in the US. He said in an interview with Salon in 2003: "I've been nominated four times for a leading Oscar and you get fed up sitting there losing, you know? "I keep sitting there with that smile on my face, that same sickly smile, saying, 'Well done!'"
