Mamata flags off inaugural Rath Yatra from new Jagannath temple in Digha

Kolkata, June 27 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday inaugurated the first Rath Yatra from the newly built Jagannath temple in Digha, marking a significant cultural milestone for the coastal town in East Midnapore district on Friday evening. The event saw thousands of enthusiastic devotees—including many from abroad—chanting 'Joy Jagannath' as the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra, rolled through a 750-metre route. The Chief Minister, accompanied by her cabinet colleagues, ceremonially pulled the ropes of the chariots and swept the path with a golden broom before offering 'arati' to the deities around 2 pm. To maintain order during the grand procession, the state government erected barricades along the entire nearly one-kilometre stretch. Banerjee had earlier clarified that while devotees would not be allowed to flood the streets, they would still be able to touch the chariot ropes from behind the barricades via ropes placed adjacent to the guardrails. Despite this provision, the decision to restrict movement drew mixed reactions from the large gathering of pilgrims, some of whom expressed disappointment at not being allowed to fully participate in the traditional chariot-pulling experience. The festivities included vibrant cultural performances. A group of ISKCON devotees from abroad, along with their children, performed devotional dances to the tune of 'Hare Ram, Hare Krishna' and music by Madhab's rock band, adding a global touch to the spiritual celebration. The newly inaugurated Jagannath temple—constructed at a cost of Rs 250 crore by the West Bengal government—is envisioned as both a spiritual and cultural hub. Designed in the traditional Kalinga style, the temple is a close replica of the iconic Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha, located approximately 345 km away. Made with pink sandstone sourced from Rajasthan, the temple boasts intricate craftsmanship from over 800 artisans. Key architectural features include the Bhoga Mandap, Nata Mandap, Jagamohan, and Garbhagriha, echoing the 12th-century temple in Puri. However, unlike the original, the Digha temple is open to people of all faiths, including non-Hindus and foreigners. Spread across 20 acres, the complex includes grand gates such as the Singhadwar, Byaghradwar, Hastidwar, and Ashwadwar. It also houses a shrine dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and a separate Bhogshala for preparing offerings for Lord Jagannath. Since its formal inauguration on April 30, the temple has been a subject of political debate, especially following criticism from servitors of the Puri temple. Nonetheless, it is expected to emerge as a major pilgrimage and tourism destination on Bengal's coast. UNI XC GNK

Watch: UAE workers fly to Kazakhstan in International Workers' Day surprise trip

Sharjah: Ten construction workers in the UAE were given a surprise overseas trip to Kazakhstan as part of an International Workers' Day celebration, in recognition of their outstanding performance and dedication over the past year. Selected from a pool of thousands, the workers were first given Golden Achievement Awards for their excellence and informed about their reward — an international trip. Ahead of the all-expenses-paid journey, workers were presented with briefcases containing new outfits, jackets and shoes for the three-day trip. The very next day, they were flown from Sharjah to Almaty, where they were greeted at the airport with traditional Kazakh music and local hats 'taqiya' arranged through the tour operators. The itinerary included visits to snow-covered mountain ranges and springtime orchards in bloom, sights the men had never seen before. Dream-like trip One of the workers, Hare Ram, described the mountains as 'heavenly.' 'I have seen such places only in the movies,' he said. Another worker, Sadar Alam, said the experience was like 'walking through a dream.' Shymbulak Mountain, one of the country's highest accessible ranges, is still covered in snow, while the orchards of apple and cherry trees have blossomed during spring. For Sanjay Kumar, it was the first time seeing snow and flowering trees in one place. 'It was like two seasons in a single frame,' he said. Year-long selection process The top ten workers were chosen through a year-long selection process based on performance, attendance, conduct at workplace and accommodation, dedication to the company and family responsibility. The trip was organised by UAE-based World Star Holding, a manpower supply company led by an Indian expat couple from Kerala, Nishad Hussain, chairman, and Haseena Nishad, managing director. Known for its labour welfare initiatives, the company has previously funded luxury hotel stays, yacht trips, landmark visits, and onboard entertainment for workers during their daily commutes. It is the second time that the company has sent outstanding workers on international trips to mark Workers' Day. According to the couple, the aim of such events is not only to reward individual effort but also to uplift the morale of the entire workforce and build stronger connections between employers and employees.

Odisha bids tearful adieu to Pahalgam terror victim Prasant Satpathy; CM announces Rs 20 lakh ex gratia

BHUBANESWAR: The nondescript and quiet Ishani village in Balasore district turned into a river of sorrow and reverence on Thursday as hundreds walked behind the mortal remains of Prasant Satpathy, who fell to terrorists' bullets at Pahalgam in Kashmir, two days back. His body was taken out in a procession that stretched over a kilometre. The chants of 'Hare Krishna Hare Ram' amidst the rhythmic beating of mridang echoed through the village. The atmosphere was filled with emotions, and the heart-wrenching sobs of family members and relatives who had watched him grow up. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi flew to Ishani in the morning. He not only paid floral tributes to Prasant's mortal remains but also walked alongside the grieving family, relatives and local residents, a rare gesture that struck an emotional chord. The chief minister spoke to the family members and announced Rs 20 lakh ex gratia, a job for Prasant's wife and free education for his son. "This is not just a personal loss to the family but a collective tragedy for the state. We will ensure that the child's future is protected and the family is given all necessary support," he said. Expressing shock over the cowardly terrorist attack, Majhi said he is deeply saddened and heartbroken. "May the almighty bestow the family with immense strength and fortitude in these hours of grief. I pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul and express my condolences to the bereaved family, " he said. Majhi was accompanied by Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and BJP state president Manmohan Samal. Prasant's body arrived at Bhubaneswar airport in midnight and was brought to Ishani in a special vehicle after Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, and government officials paid tributes. By morning, the village had swelled with mourners. The funeral procession moved slowly through the lanes of Ishani with people lined up with folded hands and moist eyes, offering prayers and flowers. His wife Priyadarshini broke down upon seeing the body, clutching her nine-year-old son Tanuj, who looked on, confused and silent, unable to fully grasp the enormity of the loss. He later lit the funeral pyre before the body was consigned to the flames. Prasant's elder brother, Sushant and younger brother, Jayant are in deep shock ever since they heard the devastating news. 'My brother left for Kashmir with dreams and came back wrapped in a coffin. I still cannot believe he is gone. I will never get a younger brother like him,' Sushant said, holding back tears. Prasant, who worked at the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET) in Balasore as an accounts assistant, had travelled to Kashmir with his wife and son Tanuj on April 19 for a long-awaited vacation. Pahalgam was the final stop in their itinerary, and they were supposed to return on Wednesday. The family had just completed a zipline ride in the scenic Baisaran valley when terrorists opened fire. Prasant, struck in the head by a bullet, died an hour later in the arms of his shocked wife.
