Son of the river comes back to save lives: The quiet hero of Narmada's deadly Dhuandhar Falls

MADHYA PRADESH : A cop who played in River Pench all through his younger years, is now rescuing people drowning in River Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Hariom Singh Bains, a 48-year-old police head constable, has saved more than 200 lives in seven years from drowning in the famous Dhuandhar Waterfalls on River Narmada, in Jabalpur district's Bhedaghat town. Dhuandhar waterfalls, known for its smoky waters and marble rocks, has seen an increasing number of people committing suicide or drowning due to accidents, over the past few years. Guided by the mission of not letting people lose their lives in the famous waterfalls, Hariom, joined by five local youngsters, has saved 200-plus lives, out of which around 80% were suicide attempts. Hailing from Chhindwara district, Hariom learnt the art of swimming and diving in the Pench River during his teenage years. He joined the MP Police as a constable in 2008 and since then has been posted in Jabalpur district. His first successful rescue operation happened in 2010, during his first posting at Jabalpur's Bargi Nagar Chowki, when he formed an integral part of the overnight operations to rescue seven shepherds stranded on an island created by the swollen Temar River. This operation earned him the reputation of being an expert life saver. Since then, he has struck an inseparable bond with the Dhuandhar falls. In 2016, two nursing students from MP's Satna district had jumped into the mammoth waterfall at around midnight. Without caring for his own life, Hariom jumped into the river and managed to save one of the girls, but the other was lost in the swollen river. This feat won him the coveted Jeevan Raksha Padak in 2018. Just a year before saving the female nursing student from Satna district, Hariom had saved the life of a Jabalpur-based college going girl, who was hell bent on ending her life in the waterfalls.

Cops tweak murder report, court calls for action

Meerut: A court in Bareilly has directed the DGP and SSP to probe the "biased actions" of two investigating officers — Virendra Singh Rana and Shoaib Miya — for trying to protect a trader accused of orchestrating the murder of a city-based doctor over a property dispute in 2020. The court of ADJ observed that the "deliberate negligence by the IOs during their probe into a case of brutal murder is certainly worth a revisit..." "The IOs deliberately removed the name of accused Rohit Gupta, a trader, who hired his employee, Mohd Imran, to kill Dr Sanjay Singh . Before the chargesheet, Rohit's name was dropped, despite the trader being named by the victim's brother, Hariom Singh (also the eyewitness), in the FIR. After Hariom's testimony, prosecution filed an affidavit highlighting negligence, and the court allowed a trial. Rohit then challenged the order in Allahabad HC, which is pending. And Rohit is being separately tried in Bareilly court," ADGC Sachin Jaiswal told TOI on Thursday. Jaiswal added: "On Sept 16, 2020, Dr Sanjay, Hariom and their uncle were at the hospital. During the trial, it was revealed that "the doctor ran a hospital on Rohit's land" in Bareilly. The local trader was pressuring him to vacate it, but the doctor asked for more time. The court observed: "Despite having this information, no evidence was collected regarding the property dispute and rivalry between Sanjay and Rohit, nor was this evidence presented before the court. Rather, in the last probe document, Rohit's name was separated from the investigation and a chargesheet was filed only against Imran." The court of ADJ, Amrita Shukla, on Wednesday while pulling up the two IOs for the "biased probe", sentenced Imran to life in jail for the doctor's murder along with a fine of Rs 40,000 on him. Beaten up at police station in Ghaziabad, says man; cops claim drunk driving

Ghaziabad: A man has alleged he was assaulted at a police station on June 28 while picking up a friend arriving from Delhi. Police countered that the man was riding a bike without a number plate, failed to show documents, and misbehaved with officers. A subsequent medical examination confirmed that the man had consumed liquor, police said. In a video shared on social media, Hariom, a resident of Bulandshahr, claimed that he was stopped by police officers shortly after picking up a friend, who was coming from Delhi with cancer medication. He alleged that despite showing the necessary documents, the cops misbehaved with him and his friend. ACP (Modinagar) Gyan Prakash Rai said a complaint was received via social media from Hariom. Upon investigation, it was found that on June 28, a campaign was underway against public drinking and drunk driving. When the police enquired about the documents, the person failed to provide them and began misbehaving. Police added that their bike had a modified horn. Therefore, the vehicle was seized under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and they were booked under Section 34 of the Police Act, later released as per procedure. tnn You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida
