Udupi's ‘Shyena Drishti' sets surveillance standard
Udupi: Udupi district unveiled the 'Shyena Drishti' initiative, a state-of-the-art CCTV surveillance system, on Thursday, marking a significant stride in public safety infrastructure. Launched by Udupi District In-Charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, the project, funded entirely by the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) with a Rs. 2.5 crore investment, is the first of its kind in the state as announced by the minister. The advanced network comprises 621 IP cameras strategically placed across 207 key intersections, supplemented by 20 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 10 critical junctions. Backed by a 4 TB storage system, optical fibre connectivity, and a four-hour battery backup, the setup ensures seamless real-time monitoring to bolster security, curb crime, and streamline traffic management across the district. At the launch event at the Udupi Service Bus Stand, Laxmi Hebbalkar commended the UCCI for its visionary public-private partnership, emphasising its potential to inspire similar initiatives. 'This project transcends commerce, reflecting a deep commitment to societal welfare,' she said, highlighting how the surveillance system will fortify safety in both urban and rural areas while setting a precedent for corporate responsibility. Police officials, including Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar and Additional SP Sudhakar S. Naik, underscored the system's role in enhancing law enforcement capabilities and traffic regulation, positioning Udupi as a leader in smart governance. The event, attended by UCCI President Ammunje Prabhakar Nayak, Honorary Secretary Dr. Vijayendra Vasant Kadiyali, and Deputy SP Prabhu D.T., showcased a unified effort to elevate public safety standards.

Udupi police implement Drishti Project as part of outreach programme
Udupi: As part of the Mane Mane Beti, or door-to-door outreach programme launched in July, Udupi District police launched the Drishti Project. SP Hariram Shankar told reporters on Monday that to curb criminal activities, night patrol arrangements were introduced in selected urban and market areas of the district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The aim is to effectively prevent theft, crimes against women, and offences involving drug addicts, while also ensuring the safety of commercial establishments, residents living alone, and senior citizens. To strengthen this, a group of 50-100 houses was formed, and security guards were appointed to patrol their assigned areas between 10pm and 6am. Already, 10 groups are functioning. If they come across any suspicious person or incident, they must immediately inform the beat police or the District Police Control Room. The remuneration for the appointed security guards will be borne by the residents. Currently, the Drishti Project has been launched in 12 locations, two each in the Udupi Town, Shirva, and Gangolli police station limits, and one each in the limits of Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala Town, Hiriyadka, Shankaranarayana, and Brahmavar police stations. In the coming days, the programme will be extended to 21 more locations across the district, the SP said. As a continuation of this initiative, Udupi District police, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, has planned an ambitious project to install 601 CCTV cameras at 207 junctions and border roads across the district. The estimated cost of this project is around Rs 2.5 crore. The project is called Syena Drishti. In the initial phase, 10 Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras will be installed at the district borders, locations prone to communal tension, and strategic points such as Mala, Hosmaru, and Sacharipete in Karkala Rural police station limits, Sanur in Karkala Town police station limits, Someshwara in Hebri police limits, Amasabailu in Amasebail police station limits, Hosangadi and Dali in Kollur Police station limits, Mel Gangolli in Gangolli police station limits, Malpe Beach in Malpe police station limits, and Udupi City Bus Stand in Udupi Town police station limits. Udupi Chamber of Commerce president Ammunje Prabhakar Nayak and honorary secretary Dr Vijayendra Vasant Kadiyali were present. Additionally, 10 high-quality cameras will be installed at Kalsanka Junction, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte Junction, Service Bus Stand, and Old KSRTC Bus Stand in Udupi City Municipality limits, Mkodi Junction and Kandloor Pete in Kundapur sub-division limits, Baradi and Naravi in Karkala sub-division limits. Footage from these cameras will be continuously monitored by the respective local police stations and the District Police Control Room. "With this, every corner of the district will be covered with CC Cameras, in probably the first of its kind initiative in the country," the SP said.

Udupi police to install 601 CCTV cameras in 207 junctions for citizen safety
Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar on Monday said the department, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, has planned to install 601 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 207 junctions in the district. The ambitious project, to be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore, Mr. Shankar told reporters in Udupi, was aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens in the district. Border areas, areas prone to communal strife and vantage locations would be covered in the initial stage of implementation. As many as 10 Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras would be installed at Mala, Hosmar and Sachharipete in Karkala rural police limits, Sanur in Karkala town police, Someshwara in Hebri police, Hosangadi in Amasebail police, Dali in Kollur police, Melgangolli in Gangolli police, Malpe Beach in Malpe police and City Bus Stand in Udupi Town Police station limits, the SP said. Further, 10 high-resolution cameras would be installed at Kalsanka and Karavali Junctions, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, Service Bus Stand, and old KSRTC Bus Stand in Udupi City Municipality limits, M. Kodi Junction, and Kandlur town in Kundapur subdivision, and Baradi and Naravi in Karkala subdivision limits. Jurisdictional police, as well as personnel at the district control room, would continuously monitor these cameras, Mr. Shankar said. Project Drishti The SP said the police have already launched Project Drishti, wherein trained security guards would be deployed for night patrolling, at 12 locations in the district. It will be extended to 21 more locations shortly. The project was in vogue in Udupi city, Shirva, Gangolli, Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala Town, Hiriyadka, Shankaranarayana and Brahmavara. Whenever the security guards observe any suspicious activity during night patrol (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), they would inform the beat police as well as the police control room. The initiative would help curb criminal activities, such as theft and burglary, to a large extent, he said. Residents of the localities collectively bear the salary expenses of the security guards, the SP added. Chamber of Commerce president Ammunje Prabhakara Nayak, secretary Vijayendra, additional SP Sudhakar S. Naik and others were present.

One more held in Shirva burglary case
Udupi: The Shirva police cracked a high-value burglary case reported within the police station limits by arresting one more accused and recovering gold ornaments and ingot weighing over 248gms, valued an approximate Rs 22.3 lakh. The accused is KE Mohammed. The arrests followed an investigation into a house break-in reported on June 27, during which miscreants stole gold jewellery worth over Rs 12 lakh. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that on the night of June 27, a burglary took place at the residence of Pavitra Poojarthi located on Mattaru Road in Shirva village. While she and her son were asleep, miscreants broke open the window hooks and forcefully opened the door latch using an iron rod to gain entry into the house. They made away with approximately 137 gms of gold jewellery valued at around Rs 12.7 lakh. In this connection, a case was registered at the Shirva police station. The total weight of the seized gold bars is 182 gms. In total, from both Aboobacker and KE Mohammed, police recovered 248.7 gms of gold ornaments and bars, collectively valued at Rs 22.3 lakh. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.

3 interstate ganja peddlers held
Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Crime Branch (CCB) police team seized 123 kg of ganja and arrested three persons involved in its transportation from Andhra Pradesh. City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated that the CCB team intercepted two vehicles near Matadakere at Kantavara Cross in Beluvai village, Moodbidri, based on credible information. The police team found ganja being transported in two cars. The arrested suspects are Masood MK,45, a resident of Mogaru House, Adoor, in Kasaragod district of Kerala, Mohammed Ashiq,24, and Suber,30, both residents of Parappa in Kasaragod. Police seized two vehicles and five mobile phones from the arrested. The total value of the seized items is estimated at Rs 46.2 lakh. Moodbidri police registered a case, and investigations are under way, said the commissioner. He added that the city police will intensify its drives to clamp down on drug peddling in the city. Cattle Theft Kundapur Rural police in Udupi on Friday arrested four individuals for stealing a cow near Kalavara Junction. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said CCTV footage from the area showed two cows resting near a bakery around 7 pm on July 28.
