Grocery worker plays lottery at his NC supermarket — and wins a huge prize
A grocery worker played the lottery at his supermarket — and scored a big win. Now, the North Carolina prize winner hopes to buy a new home. 'This is a blessing,' Michael Guilford told the N.C. Education Lottery in an Aug. 1 news release. Guilford won $250,000 at a Harris Teeter in Raleigh. While at the grocery store where he works, he tried his luck on the 20X the Cash game. 'Something was just pushing me to buy that ticket,' Guilford said. 'It was like instinct.' It turns out, his intuition was spot on. He won a top prize in the $5 scratch-off game, which has proven to be lucky for him in the past. 'I won $1,000 on it a few years ago so I didn't want to give up on playing it,' Guilford told lottery officials. The lucky winner, who lives in Raleigh, kept $179,376 after taxes. It's not the first time a lottery player's gut feeling has paid off. Another North Carolina man felt drawn to an online game that made him richer, McClatchy News reported in July.

Only one grocery store remains open on Amelia Island, residents voice concerns over access to food
Grocery shopping has become increasingly difficult for Fernandina Beach residents, as two of the island's three major grocery stores are closed for renovations, leaving only one store, Harris Teeter, open to serve the entire community. Harris Teeter recently celebrated the grand reopening of its Amelia Island location. But with heightened demand, shoppers are experiencing long lines, limited parking, and growing frustration. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< As crowds packed the newly reopened Harris Teeter, some customers were forced to park along curbs and side streets. That created issues for drivers like Charlotte Roberts. 'When I came back, I noticed the entire side of my car had been scraped by another automobile,' Roberts said. The strain on the store comes after the island's Winn-Dixie closed in late July to begin its conversion into an Aldi—a process expected to take six to eight months. Meanwhile, the island's Publix has been closed since April and isn't expected to reopen until next fall. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] 'Winn-Dixie was here, and Publix was here. We missed them. Everybody misses them,' said resident Kay Stein. 'We are not happy about that. No one is happy. I'm gonna start going off island, I guess,' she added. For some residents, especially those without reliable transportation, leaving the island to shop for food isn't a realistic option. 'It's insane because I do a lot of work with Barnabas. There are a lot of people who are in bad situations, and they live in that area of town. They can't get to the grocery store. They have no place to shop,' said Roberts To address these concerns, the Fernandina Beach City Council recently discussed a proposal to launch a summer shuttle initiative to help residents reach grocery stores. However, city officials said the plan did not move forward. Until more options return, many locals say they'll need to travel off-island—or rely on neighbors—for their most basic needs. A Massive Recall on a Variety of Sushi Products Has Just Been Upgraded for a Serious Reason—Here's What to Know
A Massive Recall on a Variety of Sushi Products Has Just Been Upgraded for a Serious Reason—Here's What to Know originally appeared on Parade. As long as our favorite foods and products are made at scale, recalls will always be part of the deal. And just when it seems like a brand is in the clear, a recall can be bumped up in severity as new information comes to light. That's exactly what happened this week, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I risk level for a wide range of sushi products originally recalled by Harris Teeter back in May. The upgrade stems from a batch of cucumbers received by the company that may be contaminated with salmonella—a development serious enough to signal 'a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' 😋😋🍳🍔 According to the FDA, the Class I risk classification was issued on June 27. The affected products were distributed to Harris Teeter locations across Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall. But the FDA noted that salmonella infections can, in rare cases, turn fatal—contributing to roughly 450 deaths in the U.S. each year. The bacteria typically causes gastrointestinal illness and fever, with symptoms showing up between 12 and 72 hours after exposure and lasting up to a week. Anyone with reason for concern should keep an eye out for symptoms like diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. In more severe cases, infections can lead to high fever, body aches, headaches, lethargy, rashes and even blood in the urine.A full list of the recalled products is included below—but fair warning, it's a long one. If you have any Zenshi sushi products on hand, we strongly recommend checking the product names and UPC codes carefully to see if you might be affected. FDA issues most dangerous recall for sushi that carries 'reasonable risk of DEATH'
The FDA has updated its recall warning for sushi sold at a popular grocery store to the highest danger classification. ZENSHI sushi products sold by Harris Teeter in seven states and DC were recalled on May 20 after it was discovered that cucumbers used to make the sushi had potentially be contaminated with salmonella. The supermarket announced the sweeping recall in May, urging customers in those states to dispose of the products if they had them or return them to the store. The classification upgrade brings it to Class I, the highest risk level the FDA can designated a recalled product. A Class I risk classification represents 'a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' The salmonella risk is believed to stem from the use of cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc that have also been recalled after being sold in 18 states that has caused 45 illnesses and 16 hospitalizations. Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, which causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and sometimes bloody stool. Many people with salmonellosis also develop a fever, which can become severe and require hospitalization. And the severe GI upset can lead to dehydration. Adults 65 and older, children under 5 years, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get very sick from Salmonella, caused by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and usually lasts four to seven days. Salmonella sickens 1.3 million Americans each year, leading to 26,500 hospitalizations and about 400 deaths. Harris Teeter did not confirm that the cucumbers behind the sushi recall were those grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. Still, the US is currently in the midst of a massive Bedner cucumber recall on the heels of a wave of salmonella illnesses across multiple states. Bedner Growers supplied the cucumbers to Fresh Start Produce Sales, which then distributed to Harris Teeter stores in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The tainted cucumbers have been linked by the FDA to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 45 people in 15 states. The outbreak was uncovered during an April follow-up to a 2024 incident that sickened 551 people and hospitalized 155 across 34 states and Washington, D.C. Investigators traced the earlier outbreak to salmonella bacteria found in untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers and Thomas Produce Company farms. In addition to sushi recalls, businesses have issued similar notices for other items including the risky cucumbers, including snack trays and salads. Last month, Supreme Produce recalled Yummi Sushi products sold at Kroger grocery stores linked to Bedner cucumbers. The CDC said about the recalled produce last month: 'If you have cucumbers at home and can't tell where they are from, throw them away.' Health officials added: 'When eating out over the next week, ask if cucumbers were from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc.' Salmonellosis isn't a stomach bug. The infection typically begins with relentless, watery diarrhea that can become bloody, paired with severe cramping. Patients may spike fevers over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, vomit repeatedly, and become dangerously dehydrated, leading to dry, cracked lips, sunken eyes, and dizziness so severe it makes standing feel impossible. In the worst cases, the bacteria can escape the gut and enter the bloodstream, triggering life-threatening infections in the bones, brain, or heart. If you're feeling sick after a suspected salmonella exposure, the CDC recommends calling a doctor if you're dealing with any serious symptoms.
