Netflix is about to lose the wildest psychological thriller of 2024 — here's your last chance to stream it
"Trap" is one of 2024's more infamous releases; you don't need to look far to find plenty of critics and viewers telling you to steer clear of the M. Night Shyamalan thriller... but I'm no "Trap" denier. I saw this twisting thriller in theaters and left with a smile on my face; despite its flaws, "Trap" is a ton of fun. And, seeing as this movie is leaving Netflix very soon, now seems as good a time as any to recommend it to would-be viewers. Yes, now that we have Netflix's June schedule, we know that your last day to stream "Trap" on Netflix is Tuesday, June 10. As of the time of writing, that means you've got just one week left to stream "Trap" on Netflix, at the time of writing. If you need convincing, you can find a little more info about the movie — and why I think "Trap" is worth adding to your watchlist — below. "Trap" sees American firefighter and picture-perfect suburban dad Cooper Abbott (Josh Hartnett), taking his teen daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to see her favorite popstar, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan) in concert... where something sinister is about to go down. Turns out the cops believe that a grisly serial killer known as "The Butcher" is also in attendance, so they've got the whole place locked down to finally bring his reign of terror to an end. And given we learn Cooper's the one with a killer secret mere minutes into the film, that presents him with a major problem. How on earth is he going to make it out of the arena? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In addition to Hartnett, Donohue, and Shyamalan, "Trap" also stars Alison Pill, Hayley Mills, Jonathan Langdon, Marnie McPhail-Diamond, and Mark Bacolcol, among others. Look, I'm not entirely sure that "Trap" is actually a good movie, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a good time when I saw it in theaters. Chiefly, that's because of our protagonist. Josh Hartnett's playful performance is worth the price of admission alone. Watching Cooper puzzle out his predicament is a real treat precisely because Hartnett is so invested in the role. It's the same commitment that makes his recent action-comedy "Bullet Train" riff, "Fight or Flight" work so well. He's committed to doing as much as possible with this absurdly silly conceit. And, while "Trap" at times feels like little more than a way to promote Saleka's music career, when we're outside the concert hall, it's packed with increasingly absurd turns that make it worth sticking with. "Trap" is assuredly messy and will doubtless not work for everyone, but if you can revel in Hartnett's killer charisma and buy into campy storytelling, this is a entertaining ride that lives up to the "thriller" label. Critically, the reaction could politely be described as "mixed." At the time of writing, "Trap" currently holds a 57% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a slightly higher 64% score from fellow moviegoers. As an example of what reviewers had to say, THR's Lovia Gyarkye described "Trap" as "a concert movie for Shyamalan's daughter [...] wrapped in a middling thriller kept afloat by a compelling performance from Josh Hartnett." Entertainment Weekly reviewer Jordan Hoffman called "Trap" Shyamalan's "most preposterous movie yet" and "a film mostly of surface pleasures," but adds "there's a lot of fun waiting to be had for those willing to check any large items like scrutiny or skepticism before entering the arena." Empire's Dan Jolin offers a more negative take, giving it a 2-star rating and calling it "an oddly inert wannabe nail-biter", summing "Trap" up as "an initially cool premise that goes nowhere interesting as it heads off somewhere else too quickly. Hartnett does his best, but director Shyamalan seems more interested in trying to convince us of his daughter's pop-star credentials." Nevertheless, I do think there's some fun to be had with "Trap," and if your interest is piqued, I'd strongly recommend streaming "Trap" on Netflix before it leaves the platform on June 10. Not convinced? We can still help you find something new to watch. Check out our round-up of the best movies on Netflix for tons more streaming recommendations perfect for your next movie night.

Trump's policies risk inflating a new market bubble, BofA says
Bank of America said on Friday that a policy trifecta of lower taxes, lower tariffs, and lower interest rates could fuel a new speculative bubble in markets. The prediction comes as Donald Trump's "big beautiful bill," which would lower taxes among other fiscal measures, sits with the Senate after passing the House of Representatives last week. Meanwhile, Trump continues to pursue trade deals and has ramped up calls for the Fed to lower interest rates. BofA investment strategist Michael Hartnett said that policy could fuel a "deeper" rotation out of bonds and into a handful of areas of the stock market — most notably AI and the high-flying tech names that make up the Magnificent Seven — as well as crypto. Hartnett flagged the relationship between the stock and bond markets as a telltale sign of a bubble forming. An inversion of the classic "bonds master, stocks servant" dynamic has been a mark of past speculative frenzies, with this kind of market behavior seen in 12 of the last 14 bubbles, he noted. The 30-year Treasury touched the highest level since 2008 last week as markets tumbled over fears about the GOP budget bill adding to the US deficit. "Nothing screams bubble more than equities driving nominal/real yields higher," Hartnett wrote. The analysts added that based on past market manias, the Magnificent Seven could see a fresh gain of 30% before the group peaks. The speculation mentioned by Hartnett may already be underway, with so-called low-quality stocks outperforming the broader market over the past few weeks. This dynamic was first pointed out by Bloomberg in a story published Thursday. Illustrating this dynamic, a basket of low-quality stocks compiled by UBS — which counts meme stocks like GameStop and AMC among its components — has handily beaten the S&P 500 since its recent bottom on April 8. Crypto has also seen gains in recent weeks, highlighting the speculative, risk-on mood that's returned as investors work past the tariff chaos that sparked April's big sell-off. Bitcoin is trading at fresh records, hitting an all-time high above $112,000 last week.

Woman accused in Horry County cross-burning back in jail for allegedly violating bond in unrelated indecent exposure case
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A woman accused of intimidating her Black neighbors by taking part in a November 2023 cross-burning near Conway is back in jail after she allegedly violated the conditions of her bond in a separate, unrelated case. Alexis Hartnett, who is still awaiting trial in the cross-burning case, was arrested after allegedly violating her home-detention by returning to Horry County without a valid reason, such as a court date or a specific appointment with her lawyer, the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office said. She was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Thursday. Hartnett was placed on home detention after being accused of indecent exposure in March 2024. She was released on a $10,000 bond after the arrest, and Judge Bradley D. Mayers ordered her not to have any contact with the victim in the case. Hartnett and her boyfriend, Worden Butler were accused of harassment after the cross-burning incident that occurred during Thanksgiving weekend in 2023. He pleaded guilty in January to second-degree harassment and was sentenced to time served. The cross-burning incident led FBI agents to search the home on Corbett Drive as part of a civil-rights investigation. The case also renewed calls for a state-level hate–crime law in South Carolina * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. 5 top new movies to stream this week on HBO Max, Disney Plus, Hulu and more (May 27-June 2)
This week sees plenty of new movies arriving across the best streaming services. The major players like Netflix and Prime Video are sitting out the next seven days, but their rivals are picking up the slack with HBO Max, Disney Plus, Hulu and Peacock offering new flicks for subscribers to enjoy. There's no contest when it comes to picking my personal highlight this week: HBO Max's 'Mountainhead' has all my attention. This sharp comedy-drama comes from 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong, and the trailer presents a similar tone to his award-winning black comedy series. Other noteworthy newcomers include the Disney Plus debut of 'Captain America: Brave New World' and family flick 'Dog Man' on Peacock. Here's a guide to the most noteworthy new additions across streaming platforms this week, and if you want to watch some TV instead, we have a rundown of the top new TV shows you can stream this week as well. Josh Hartnett stars in this sky-high action comedy that appears to take pretty clear cues from 'Bullet Train.' That's not a bad source of inspiration and Tom's Guide's own Martin Shore labeled it 'the wildest movie I've seen in 2025' and also called it 'an absolute riot.' This glowing write-up has definitely convinced me to add it to my watchlist this week. In 'Fight or Flight,' Hartnett plays a skilled mercenary who boards an international flight bound for San Francisco. But he's not on this plane to watch movies and eat questionable food, he's been tasked with identifying an elusive hacker known as 'The Ghost.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The job gets even trickier when it becomes clear the plane is filled with assassins, and these contract killers have both 'The Ghost' and Hartnett's Lucas Reyes in their crosshairs, forcing an uneasy alliance. Buy or rent on Amazon from May 27 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig' is one of the best movies of last year you (probably) didn't see. It's a gripping political thriller that competed for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize. The work of writer/director Mohammed Rasoulof, the twisting narrative unfolds with almost unbearable tension, and the performances are electric. The movie centers on Iman (Missagh Zareh), a judge in the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, who struggles with increasing paranoia as the Iranian city falls into a state of political unrest following the death of a young woman. As the outside situation deteriorates, things within Iman's home also take a turn when a handgun given to him for protection by the government goes missing. He suspects that his wife and daughter may have taken it, and things only go south from there. Watch on Hulu from May 27 The fourth Captain America solo movie sees the superhero mantle passed over to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) following the events of the Disney Plus series 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.' So long, Steve Rogers. While 'Captain America: Brave New World' is far from a truly vintage entry in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's a step up from some of the franchise's recent duds. It's a mostly enjoyable blockbuster, even if it feels extremely routine after 30+ MCU movies. In this new world full of sinister threats originating from Earth and beyond, Sam is still finding his footing now that he's taken up the Captain America role. But he's forced to learn on the job as he's drawn into a major international incident when freshly elected U.S. president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) is targeted in a mysterious assassination attempt. Watch on Disney Plus from May 28 The whimsical 'Dog Man' series by Dav Pilkey is a childhood staple for millions, so it's no surprise the canine police officer's first big-screen outing has been warmly embraced by viewers of all ages. Packing a charming but very silly story and vibrant animation courtesy of Dreamworks, it's got all the ingredients to be a firm family favorite, and this week it arrives on Peacock. Based on a graphic novel series, it sees a police officer and his faithful pooch fused together after an explosive injury (don't worry, it's less grisly than it sounds). Reborn as Dog Man, the human-dog hybrid must embrace his new identity while also stopping a feline supervillain, Petey the Cat, from unleashing chaos on Ohkay City. The movie includes the voice talents of Peter Hastings, Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery and Ricky Gervais. Watch on Peacock from May 30 I'm a 'Succession' superfan, so it's probably no surprise that 'Mountainhead' on HBO Max is my most anticipated new movie of the week. This satirical comedy-drama comes from Jesse Armstrong, the creator of the award-winning HBO show, and the man behind the excellent British comedy 'Peep Show.' Armstrong knows how to write biting dialogue and craft memorable and compelling characters, even if they're also often unlikable. 'Mountainhead' is a confined movie that sees a group of wealthy tech billionaires (Steven Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef) meet in a plush mountainside lodge where an international crisis unfolds around them. Based on the trailer, it looks packed with snappy exchanges that scream vintage Jesse Armstrong. In many ways, it appears to be something of a spiritual sequel to 'Succession.' Consider me fully sold. Watch on HBO Max from May 31
