MARTA Selects CDM Smith to Design the Largest Bus Rapid Transit System in the State of Georgia
The effort is MARTA's largest BRT project to date. MARTA, a metro system in Georgia, has selected CDM Smith to design the largest bus rapid transit system in the state. Atlanta, May 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CDM Smith was selected by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to design the Clayton County Southlake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Alignment and Airport Connectivity project. CDM Smith and its partners will design approximately 15 miles of BRT with an elevated guideway into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The effort is MARTA's largest BRT project to date. This project will greatly improve Clayton County residents' access to job opportunities and education and will open doors for further transit-oriented development in the area. Direct premium transit service to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and MARTA's rail system will greatly contribute to the local and regional economies. Planning and design work is funded by the one-cent sales tax approved by Clayton County voters in 2014. The project has submitted an application for a Small Starts grant award from the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. The current project budget is $355.6 million. In service of its goal to provide premium transit service throughout the county, the BRT system design will include an elevated guideway, elevated bus stations, and a pedestrian bridge connector to the airport terminal and MARTA train station. The design phase of this project will take two years to complete. Construction is estimated to take place from 2028 through 2030. "We brought experience from our successful BRT project portfolio and remained focused on MARTA's goals and Clayton County's needs to create the right team to design this BRT,' said CDM Smith principal Chuck Deeb. 'As the gateway to our city and the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport must meet and exceed the digital demands of today's travelers and tomorrow's innovations. This upgrade ensures our airport remains a global leader in connectivity, safety, and the overall passenger experience.' According to the announcement, the upgrade will transition the airport from 4G infrastructure to 5G, with mechanisms in place to allow any future carrier's signal, including expansion of service with other partners. Airport officials said the upgrades will also improve passenger experiences, upgrade radio signal distribution for public safety personnel and further reinforce the facility's commitment to safety and operational excellence. Right now, the airport said it was using 'outdated equipment that has reached end-of-life,' with limited parts available for repairs and a design that makes it difficult to modernize. 'As the world's busiest and most efficient airport, we are committed to delivering a world-class travel experience in every dimension — including connectivity,' said ATL General Manager Ricky Smith. 'This DAS upgrade is a critical step in future-proofing our facility and meeting the digital expectations of our guests.' [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Create Account The National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report Wednesday that the plane quickly returned to the airport on the morning of Feb. 24 and evacuated all 99 people aboard. Two people sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, but no one was hurt by the smoke. Initially, the airline described the incident as just a haze inside the Boeing 717 aircraft. Delta didn't immediately respond to questions about the incident Wednesday afternoon. The flight attendants reported that the smoke began near one of the doors in the front of the plane before it also started coming out of all the vents throughout the plane, according to the report. The flight attendants tried contacting the pilots but initially couldn't reach them because they were focused on emergency procedures and flying the plane. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The flight attendants assured passengers they were trained for the situation and asked them to remain calm. Shortly after the smoke appeared, the NTSB said, the pilots got a low oil pressure alarm for the right engine, so they shut it down as they were returning to the airport. When maintenance personnel inspected that engine after the plane landed they found little or no oil in the engine. RECOMMENDED VIDEO The NTSB hasn't determined if that oil leak was the cause of the smoke. That won't be established until the agency completes its full report sometime next year. The plane was met by firefighters when it landed, and when the pilots opened the flight deck door, they 'noticed a tremendous amount of smoke in the cabin, and the captain immediately ordered an evacuation,' the report said. Passengers evacuated the plane through a combination of the emergency slides at the front and back of the plane and climbing off the wing. The flight's destination had been Columbia, South Carolina. Hartsfield-Jackson bracing for record Memorial Day travel surge
The Brief Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport expects 2.6 million passengers during the eight-day Memorial Day travel period, with Friday projected as the busiest day. TSA advises travelers to arrive 2.5 to 3 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international flights due to anticipated long lines. Georgia law enforcement will increase patrols as part of the national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement campaign during the holiday weekend. ATLANTA - As the unofficial start of summer approaches, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is preparing for what could be one of its busiest travel periods ever. What they're saying Airport officials estimate more than 2.6 million passengers will travel through the airport during the eight-day Memorial Day holiday period, which begins Tuesday and runs through the Wednesday after Memorial Day. Leaders at the world's busiest airport say Friday is expected to be the peak travel day, with more than 375,000 passengers anticipated. Many travelers will either begin or end their journey in Atlanta, or connect through the airport. This travel spike comes just one month after the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recorded its busiest day ever at Hartsfield-Jackson, hinting at a packed summer travel season ahead. Nationally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicts Thursday will be the busiest air travel day since 2019, with nearly 54,000 flights scheduled across the U.S. Watch full press conference below RELATED STORIES Atlanta's airport ranked 9th most stressful in the U.S. Atlanta airport expects near-record turnout before Memorial Day Weekend Parking deck construction to impact traffic at Atlanta airport Parking rate increases go into effect at Atlanta airport What you can do To help travelers navigate the crowds, TSA officials are urging people to plan ahead and arrive early. For domestic flights, passengers should arrive 2.5 to 3 hours before departure, and at least 3 hours early for international travel. TSA representatives say they are fully staffed and ready to handle the volume. Their goal is to keep main checkpoint wait times under 30 minutes for general screening and under 10 minutes for TSA PreCheck passengers—standards they say they meet 95% of the time. Still, they warn that lines can grow quickly, especially during morning rushes, and encourage passengers to pack patience along with their luggage. TSA Deputy Federal Security Director Lalit Lal also reminded travelers that a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or acceptable alternate form of identification will help avoid delays while traveling. In addition to airport precautions, drivers should also be aware that Georgia State Patrol and local police will be out in force enforcing seat belt laws as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Click It or Ticket" campaign.
