Stranger Things introduced another retro track to Gen Z

1 2 The teaser for Stranger Things season finale has been in the news - not just for taking us back to 1980s Hawkins and the lovable monster slayers, but also reintroducing a new generation to another cult classic - Deep Purple's Child in Time . The show has been instrumental in reviving that 80s' nostalgia and interest in pop culture elements. From cassette players to pizza trucks, baggy pants to walkmans. And music has been instrumental in this narrative, turning legendary tracks into chart-toppers for Gen Z. Here's how. Kate Bush conquers charts In Season 5, Kate Bush's 1985 hit Running Up That Hill , was the leitmotif for the show when key character- Max- turned it on to escape their arc nemesis Vecna. The song became a streaming juggernaut and viral sensation. Rolling Stone UK called it 'a song so transcendent it could make even an agnostic believe that Kate Bush actually struck a deal with the Lord to create it'. The show introduced Bush to a whole new generation. Metallica's metal resurgence Standout character Eddie Munson's rooftop performance of Metallica's Master of Puppets (1986) in Season 4 reignited its popularity, with streams surging 650.3% in six days according to Variety. Metallica told Rolling Stone , 'We were blown away by how Stranger Things used ' Master of Puppets ''. Gram duets and fan tributes cemented the track's revival among younger fans, turning it into a heavy-metal anthem for the digital age. Deep Purple's epic anthem The Season 5 teaser features Deep Purple's Child in Time (1970), remixed with strings and synths. Variety calls it a 'bombastic riff, buttressed by a symphonic arrangement and high-pitched, operatic wailing'. Louder adds, '.. a song so gargantuan that one wonders why it hasn't been used for this sort of thing before.' Child in Time's India connect Child in Time draws from Bombay Calling by a band called It's a Beautiful Day. Variety notes its 'soft opening (inspired by the song) that builds dramatically'. Jon Lord, Deep Purple's organist, initially played the introduction from "Bombay Calling" during rehearsals, which the band then developed into Child in Time . Ian Gillan then wrote lyrics about the Cold War to fit the music. 'Bombay Calling' is the name of the live album from Deep Purple's 1995 concert in Mumbai.

Tradespeople say tool theft is ‘destroying' lives as millions of pounds worth stolen across UK

Words by Benedict Elliot Tradespeople have hit out at thieves who target vans storing tools and kit. It comes as one Welsh police force reports a 31% rise in incidents. Gwent Police recorded an increase from 29 to 38 incidents while a Freedom of Information (FoI) request found that at least £40 million worth of tools were stolen across the UK from 2023-2024. It means almost four in five tradespeople have suffered a tool theft. Plumber Robbie Hawkins was left feeling 'violated' after more than £3,000 worth of tools was stolen from his van. Just after midnight on May 8, his Transit Custom van that was parked near his home was broken into by thieves who used a master key to unlock the side door. Equipment including his £2,000 press gun and all his power tools, drills and angle grinders were taken within a minute. 'Everything I had worked for all my life was taken away from me,' said Mr Hawkins. The 38-year-old continued: 'This is happening to tradespeople in Wales every day. 'I broke down when I realised what happened. I've been left with nightmares and PTSD, and I now have this constant feeling of anxiety when I go to work.' Mr Hawkins, who works across mid and south Wales, has since considered leaving the trades industry. He said: 'I've been a plumber since I was 16 and I love my job, but it's not practical to carry on when you lose income and have to buy new tools. This shouldn't be happening to hard working people. 'These are tools you need to stay in work so you can feed your family.' CCTV footage showing a man taking tools from Mr Hawkins' parked van was handed to police. Officers are investigating but no arrests have yet been made. 29 out of 45 police forces in the UK responded to the FoI request. In Wales, Gwent Police recorded a 31% increase and North Wales Police recorded a 6% decrease, while South Wales Police and Dyfed-Powys Police did not respond. But the insurance company who submitted the FoI request, Direct Line, said the number of tool thefts is likely higher, as not all thefts are reported to police. Electrician Lee Jones, 38, who works across Cardiff and Gwent, estimates he lost £5,000 of tools when his van was broken into earlier this year in Llandaff. The 38-year-old, from Cardiff, said: 'It happened in broad daylight. Thieves pulled up in a car behind my van outside a property I was working in. It took them 30 seconds to cut a hole in the back door of my van, and two minutes to empty it.' Mr Jones said he was unable to work for a few weeks after the incident as he had to replace the tools. He said: 'It's not just a financial impact. It's your career. It's everything." Some tradespeople have taken it upon themselves to tackle tool theft. Carpenter Matthew Griffin, from Swansea, has been encouraging tradespeople in Wales to register the serial numbers of their tools on his app, Tool Archive, so second-hand buyers can check if they are buying stolen tools. The 27-year-old said: 'My friends have had to cancel holidays to replace stolen tools. I've seen careers ruined and people pushed to breaking point. 'My father is also a tradesman and I've seen him distraught when he's had his tools stolen. The gangs who are doing this do not give a care in the world." Trades United, a campaign group, said it wants to see more restrictions on selling second-hand power tools at bare minimum prices. The problem, they said, is that thieves can sell tools at unregulated car boot sales without worrying about getting caught. Shoaib Awan, a gas engineer from London, set up the group after his Transit Custom van was broken into twice. The second time, £8,500 worth of tools was stolen from him, forcing him to cancel a holiday with his wife and two young daughters. He explained: 'Tools worth thousands of pounds are being sold for less than 50 quid in cash at markets and car boot sales. What some tradespeople don't realise is that they buy it from there, then they get their vans broken into, and it ends up there again. 'It is a plague. It's forcing tradespeople to leave the industry. Britain is losing a lot of skilled workers because of this.' A South Wales Police spokesperson said: 'We urge people not to buy what could be stolen tools. Thieves will look to sell items on to make quick money, and this form of theft will continue for as long as there are willing buyers. 'General advice for tradespeople to reduce the chances of being targeted by thieves is to take measures, such as parking in well lit areas, ideally on private driveways, and always ensure vehicles are secured when unattended.' Mark Summerville, from Direct Line, an insurance company supporting tradespeople, said: 'It's important that all instances of tool theft are reported so police forces and lawmakers understand the full extent of the issue helping them to identify offender patterns and to allocate resources to combat these crimes. "Our data shows the value of each tool theft claim is actually on the rise, even though the overall volume of claims is moving downwards. 'Further research from us found that 75 per cent of people would not feel confident identifying stolen tools being resold. Tighter rules around providing proof of purchase when selling second-hand tools could help make it harder for criminals to resell goods and could help reduce the frequency of these thefts.'

Three UWA students dedicate 300 hours to the Wagin community for McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship

Three University of WA students dedicated 300 hours of their winter break to revitalising influential community assets to bolster a Wheatbelt town. Travelling to the Shire of Wagin, UWA students Fred Hawkins, Krish Jain and Anna Naiju individually contributed 100 hours to the Wagin Caravan Park, Wait-Jen Trail and former Old Road Board Building from June 16-18, led by the McCusker Centre for Citizenship program. Ms Naiju, who studies business analytics and management, derived a business plan to upgrade the Wagin Caravan Park by researching community needs, booking trends and benchmarking against other parks in the region. Her objective focused on safety and creating a pet and family-friendly space, proposing CCTV, accessible cabins for disabled residents, and adding power outlets. Ms Naiju said these ideas 'came from real conversations with residents'. 'These are practical changes that reflect the voices of the community, which helped create a vision for a more inclusive, welcoming, and future-ready caravan park,' she said. '(The internship) gives you a chance to grow while giving back to the community, helping you find purpose, discover your strengths, and engage with real community needs. 'The experience of living and working in a small regional town opened my eyes to the strong sense of community, warmth, and kindness that exists there.' Conservation biology undergraduate Mr Hawkins executed a Wait-Jen Trail renewal plan after assessing the financial, communal and infrastructural requirements to redevelop the 10km heritage track. Mr Hawkins said a solo-walk through the Wait-Jen Trail was a highlight, featuring 'idyllic and awe-inspiring scenery'. 'I believe my work with the shire will help attract support for the protection of WA's biodiverse ecosystems by educating visitors on the rare and unique flora and fauna of the area,' he said, 'as well as the many Indigenous communities that have deep, knowledgeable and longstanding connections to these environments.' Master of business analytics student Mr Jain gained experienced as a marketing and communications intern tasked with completing a prospectus for commercial use of the historic Old Road Board Building built in 1912. Mr Jain recommended an art cafe as a viable use of the building, which the shire endorsed by providing support and incentives to establish a private business.

I'm confident that Stranger Things 5 will be the Netflix show's best season

Stranger Things season 5 is shaping up to be one of the biggest television events of the century. After the evil Vecna opened a giant portal to the Upside Down in Hawkins, the show will present the final chapter of the heroes' years-long war with him and his legion of monsters. As one of the most acclaimed TV shows of all time, Stranger Things has set some high bars for itself, particularly with its first and fourth seasons on Netflix. The show will have to live up to a lot of lofty expectations to provide a satisfying final season for audiences. However, Stranger Things has already shown it has the key ingredients to make season 5 the best chapter in the show's history. Will will play a central role in the season's story Since the show's inception, Will Byers has been one of the most important characters in Stranger Things. Though he was absent for most of season 1, his kidnapping by the Demogorgon was the catalyst for the events of the entire series. While Will had a greater presence in subsequent seasons, his role in the story gradually diminished over time. In season 4, Will's character largely took a back seat while he and his friends focused on rescuing Eleven. Recommended Videos This should all change with season 5 now that Will and his family are back in Hawkins, which has been infiltrated by the Upside Down. Stranger Things should thus give a greater spotlight on Will and how he has been affected by Vecna's reign of terror, with the season 5 trailer teasing more of young Will's fight for survival during his time in the Upside Down. Since Will and Vecna continue to share a psychic link, the former may be a crucial part of the villain's plan in season 5. However, this bond may also help Will and his allies destroy Vecna once and for all, bringing the series full circle. Stranger Things 5 should also continue Will's arc of opening up to his loved ones about his sexuality. The show has been giving subtle hints to audiences that Will has been hiding his true self from everyone throughout its four seasons. After all the trauma and hardships Will has endured in the show, season 5 should finally give his character the closure he deserves and hopefully have him find the love he's been longing for in the series. The story will focus on the characters in Hawkins In season 4, the characters split up and embarked on missions in different corners of the globe. While some of the kids and adults stayed in Hawkins, other characters traveled across America or even into Russia. This massive, epic scope made for a distinctive story, but most of the cast were unable to showcase their compelling dynamics for much of the season. At the same time, the series just began to descend; the townspeople descended into panic as Vecna's actions killed more and more people. Stranger Things 5 will depict the main cast back together again since their return to Hawkins in season 4, allowing them to continue their lovable on-screen relationships in their hometown. From Hopper and Joyce embracing their romantic feelings to Nancy and Jonathan reuniting, the heroes of Hawkins may finally have the happy ending audiences have waited years to see once they defeat Vecna. With more monsters sprouting up, the series may also have the heroes finally opening up to their peers and loved ones about the cosmic terrors they have battled for so long in secret. This seems like it will be the case for Mike and Nancy, as the trailer implies that Vecna and his monsters will target the rest of their family. The truth about the Upside Down will be revealed Even after all these years, the Upside Down remains the biggest mystery in Stranger Things. The fourth season revealed that this strange, alternate dimension wasn't always a dark reflection of Hawkins. It also showed audiences that this world has somehow been frozen in time since Eleven opened the gate to it when the series began. Stranger Things 5 has plenty of mysteries to unravel to satisfy audiences who have stuck with the show for so long. As the heroes continue to explore the Upside Down to prevent it from consuming Hawkins, it's likely that the show will explain more of this world's history and origins. It may even elaborate more on the complex history Vecna has with the dreaded Mind Flayer, with one or both of them unleashing more hidden horrors from their dark dimension. Season 5 will feature the final battle against Vecna The entire series has been building up to the heroes' climactic battle with Vecna. Season 4 finally brought this psychic villain out of the shadows, revealing how he pulled the strings from the Upside Down and caused suffering for so many characters. Now that Vecna has created a giant gate in Hawkins, he seems ready to unleash an army of monsters on the town in an epic battle for the fate of humanity. The Stranger Things season 5 trailer has already shown Vecna appearing in Hawkins and hunting the heroes with his Demogorgons. With the U.S. military now stationed in the town, trying to stop the Upside Down's spread, audiences can expect to see a massive, bloody, and spectacular showdown straight out of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Overall, fans of Stranger Things have a lot to look forward to watching in the show's fifth and final season. The main characters will reunite in Hawkins to protect everyone in one last stand against Vecna and the Upside Down. Stranger Things should pay off all its build-up to present an epic, emotional, and mind-blowing conclusion to the series. Stranger Things 5 will premiere on Netflix on November 26, 2025.
