Hauser sprints to triathlon victory, leads world series
Australia's Matt Hauser has won a sprint finish to secure his first World Triathlon Championship Series win of the season in Japan and go to the top of the standings. Hauser held off Portugal's Vasco Vilaca in a thrilling race on Saturday, making him the man to catch after two of the eight races which culminate with the Championship Finals on home soil in Wollongong this October. The result adds to a strong start to Hauser's 2025 season, following his silver at the opener in Abu Dhabi, where he was edged out in a sprint showdown by Kiwi star Hayden Wilde - who has subsequently suffered multiple broken bones in a bike crash. Hauser, Vilaca and Brazil's Miguel Hidalgo broke clear and were left to slug it out for the medals over the final 2.5kms of the 10km run leg. With 1km to go, Vilaca surged and Hidalgo was unable to respond, but Hauser dug deep before launching his own move and pulling clear down the blue carpet. "I learned a few lessons in Abu Dhabi, not to go to early and burn my matches," Hauser said. Hauser's heroics capped off a strong day for the Australians in both the elite and para triathlon events. Luke Willian opened his season with a solid showing, finishing 12th, while Ellie Hoitink was 34th in the women's race, won by Jeanna Lehair (LUX). Jack Howell (PTS4) secured a hard-fought silver medal, just edged out in a dramatic sprint finish by Martin Schulz (GER), while Maggie Sandles (PTVI) with guide Lauren Sprague, and Grace Brimelow (PTS5) bagged bronze medals.

NZ triathlete Hayden Wilde leaves hospital following cycling crash

Photo: PHOTOSPORT New Zealand triathlete Hayden Wilde has been able to leave hospital following a crash earlier this month in Japan. The Olympic silver medallist was hospitalised after suffering broken bones and injured lungs in a bike crash. In a social media post Wilde said because no surgery was needed on his damaged lungs, he was able to leave hospital and would head back to his base in Belgium. He confirmed he had broken five ribs and a hairline fracture to a sixth. He broke a shoulder blade, injured his lungs and required a few stitches to a hip injury. Wilde admitted that he was not out of the woods yet, and had a long journey back. Following the Paris Olympics, Wilde announced he would take a two-year break from the Olympic distance event in an effort to refresh himself for another tilt at an Olympic gold medal. Since then he had been competing in longer-distance triathlons as well as running and cycling events. Olympic Silver Medallist Hayden Wilde Hospitalised In Japan
5 May 2025 New Zealand triathlete Hayden Wilde is in hospital after suffering broken bones and injured lungs in a bike crash in Japan. The Paris Olympic silver medallist shared a post on social media from his hospital bed. "Hey everyone, just thought I would update you all. I've been in a bike crash,'' Wilde said. "[I'm] surrounded with the best help ... keep you posted." Wilde listed his injuries, saying he had four broken ribs, a broken scapular (shoulder blade) and injured lungs. The 27-year-old posted that he would have to stay in Japan "for a few weeks'' to recover with his lung injury preventing him from travelling. He said he was "Pretty gutted after such a nice day yesterday". The Olympian had recorded a personal best over 10km in the Tokyo Speed Race the day before the crash. Wilde won the season opening T100 Triathlon World Tour event in Singapore last month.

Kiwi triathlete Hayden Wilde's 2025 season has been thrown into disarray following a bike crash in Japan. Wilde was training for his WTS Yokohama race on May 17 when he crashed, breaking four ribs, his scapula and sustaining lung damage. In a post to Instagram, the two-time Olympic medallist said he was "pretty gutted" by the injuries following a good day of training. In a post from the hospital, Wilde said he was "surrounded with the best help" and thanked his team and sponsors. The lung damage meant the 27-year-old can't fly, and would remain in Japan until he was able to return to Europe and rehabilitation at the Red Bull headquarters in Austria. Wilde has had a successful start to 2025, winning the opening T100 race in Singapore and currently leads the World Triathlon Series.

Twice Olympic triathlon medallist Hayden Wilde is recovering in a Japanese hospital with broken bones and injured lungs after a bike crash, the New Zealander said on social media. The 27-year-old, who took the men's triathlon silver at the Paris Games and bronze in Tokyo 2020, shared a photo from his hospital bed on Instagram and listed his injuries. "Broken four ribs. Scapular broken. Injured lungs. Surrounded with the best help. Keep you posted," the Taupo native wrote. "Pretty gutted after such a nice day yesterday." Wilde did not elaborate on the circumstances of the crash or his exact whereabouts but was in Japan after finishing seventh in the 10-km Tokyo Speed Race on Saturday.
