Newsboy's horse racing selections for Friday's five meetings, including Thirsk nap

Newboy expects his nap, Mystical Storm, to blow away his rivals in the 7.10 at Thirsk for a second career win, and his also fancies Flowerhead at Newbury in the Berkshire card's feature Listed event at 4.45 MYSTICAL STORM is fancied to get back to winning ways by beating nine opponents for the Vision Windows 'A Clear Winner' Handicap (7.10) at Thirsk this evening. ‌ Julie Camacho's son of Harry Angel came third at Haydock Park and Redcar in two starts as a juvenile in 2024 and also took the bronze medal home from Teesside on his first start of this season at the beginning of May. ‌ Mystical Storm's disappointing 10th-of-11 finish on handicap debut back at Haydock three weeks later prompted his connections to book my selection in for wind surgery. ‌ And Ryan Sexton's mount showed the benefit of the surgeon's work with a length-and-a-quarter winning margin in a novice stakes at Doncaster on July 10. Returned to the handicap sphere, Mystical Storm came home fourth of 16 behind Chesneys Charm at York last time, but he did best of the horses with a single-figure draw and is worth backing from an unchanged British Horseracing Authority rating of 77 to double his career tally. Newbury stages the Listed Sequoia Hair & Spirit St Hugh's Stakes (4.45), in which FLOWERHEAD makes plenty of appeal. After a fine 100-1 second in Royal Ascot 's Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, Charlie Clover's youngster performed to a similar level when fifth in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes on the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes undercard back in Berkshire 20 days ago. The latter contest was over six furlongs and reverting to the minimum trip - and dropping in grade - should produce the desired effect. Both of today's selections come from the afternoon Flat meeting at Haydock, with our NAP tackling the opening staying handicap and our second pick looking to land a decent sprint handicap over the minimum trip. Ron Wood's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). The four-year-old seems to keep a bit back for himself at times, which has allowed him to stay ahead of the handicapper. His recent form figures may not be too inspiring, but he had a busy campaign in 2024, and there was nothing wrong with last month's run on his reappearance at Thirsk. That return outing was over an inadequate trip of 1m 4f and he raced without his usual visor. He should be fitter now – he won second time out last year – and he goes back up in distance with the headgear refitted. He is also reunited with Daniel Tudhope, who was on board for his last two wins, and drops down from Class 4. 3.47 Haydock – Class 3 Handicap (5f) DURAN produced an eye-catching performance when finishing second behind Blue Day in an Ascot handicap over 5f last time out, and is taken to reverse the form and prove best overall. This Nigel Tinkler-trained sprinter kept finding trouble in that race and ended up being switched out widest with his challenge. He did well to get second and, in contrast, Blue Day got a dream run up the rail and has gone up 6lb in the weights. Duran won three times last year, including two useful handicaps, and he looks capable of kicking on again now. He's a half-brother to a couple of Group-race winners, including Thistle Bird who won at the top level.
