New Colorado Springs Senior Center sneak peak
(COLORADO SPRING)—The new Colorado Springs Senior Center is almost ready to open its doors. After delays from demolition, the crews worked hard to get the project back on track.
This building was made possible by collaboration from the City and the YMCA. The new Building is a massive 23,000 square feet, and will be complete with a pickle ball court, a stage for performances, spaces for classes and dance, as well as a locker room.
The City took community feedback into consideration when creating the new space.
'Parking was a huge deal as we were talking to the community,' City of Colorado Springs Director of Facilities Henry Martin said. ' I'm glad to say we delivered on that.'
The best part of the new center is that it is free to seniors.
'You've just got to be 55,' said Tom Lathrop with the YMCA.
The center was created to give seniors a place to go to give them a community of their own filled with activities to do.
'When people retire,' Lathrop said, 'They get to a point where they're like, 'I'm done working. What am I going to do?' Well, we've got tons of activities for people to participate in.'
The center is expected to open Labor Day weekend and is located at 1514 North Hancock Avenue, just south of Patty Jewett Golf Course.
