Nectar Triantis in Australia withdrawal amid uncertainty
However, he has pulled out on the eve of that first game. With Greece, who he is also eligible for, reportedly interested in his services that created a potential talking point. But Australia manager Tony Popovic says the withdrawal is down to his current situation at club level. Triantis is still under contract at Sunderland but unlikely to get a first-team chance following their promotion to the Premier League. Hibs would love to have him back and have approached the Mackems about a permanent deal. There is further interest in his services from elsewhere though and so the 22-year-old has a big decision to make. Popovich hinted that is the reason behind his international no-show. Read more: Gray's judgment: Inside the big calls that defined Hibs' remarkable season 'A very good footballer': The inside track on how Alasana Manneh has adapted to Hibs He said: 'I'm not too sure where it exactly sits. But we had him in the squad for the camp, and on the day that he was supposed to travel, he informed us that he's not coming in. 'He just said he's got a lot of things on at the moment, a lot on his mind in terms of what he wants to do. We have to respect that, and we'll see what happens.' Martin Boyle and Lewis Miller will be part of the squad but fellow Hibee Jack Iredale misses out. The defender looked set to fulfil a dream when he was called up to a training camp but he has been left out of the squad for the competitive matches.

Eliezer Mayenda spent the second half of the 23/24 campaign on loan at Hibs but exited quietly after just four outings with no goals or assists. He arrived alongside Nectar Triantis from the Black Cats and while the defender turned all action midfielder had a second coming at Hibs to great affect, Mayenda stayed to fight for his place at Sunderland. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He has managed to do so to in stunning fashion, scoring one of the goals in their 2-1 Championship play-off final win at Wembley against Sheffield United. It books Sunderland's place back in the Premier League after Tommy Watson's late effort sparked emotional scenes at England's national stadium, capping off an incredible comeback story for Mayenda, who's netted 10 goals this season. Former Hibs star helps book Sunderland return to Premier League Commentator Daniel Mann said as the ball flew in: 'Well finally they put it together and that is the result, Sunderland have suddenly produced a magic moment out of nowhere.' What it means for Triantis remains to be seen, now that his parent club have reached the Premier League, with a possible top flight chance in England opening up. Hibs will likely be keen to have him again ahead of their European qualifiers in July plus defence of Scotland's third spot. He became a virtual ever-present in David Gray's midfield and form had him nominated for the SFWA Player of the Year award. Mayenda said of his first season at Sunderland earlier this month to the Athletic, which included the spell at Hibs: 'Last season was my first season and when I started training with my new team-mates I said to my dad, 'We've a good a team here, we just need patience'. If we get patience, we can do something here, because these are good young players. I said it to supporters last season, 'Patience. Let the players work, let the players work. The results will come'. When I saw the name Sunderland, I said to my dad that I didn't want to go to the French First Division, I want to go to Sunderland. It was just my feeling, I can't tell you why exactly, it was just a natural connection. Sunderland was special. I knew it was historic in England, it had been in the Premier League and everyone has seen the documentary on Netflix.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Hibs man had unexpected chance His boss, Regis Le Bris, said of Mayenda during the play-off run: 'He got an unexpected opportunity. It's rare when you work with your lineup at the start of the season and say: 'This player will play 25 games, we can build a pathway for him'. More often, a player is in the squad but not really a starter. 'Then there is an injury and a player will seize this opportunity, because he is connected. He will say: 'I'm here and I will show you'. The best players in the world are like that and Eli showed this quality. Even he didn't expect this season. Now it's a question of consistency.'

Shaun Dennis tributes paid as Raith Rovers legend dies aged 55
Raith Rovers legend Shaun Dennis has died at the age of 55. The Kirkcaldy club says it is 'deeply saddened' at the passing of the local hero. Dennis, born and raised in the Fife town, played 453 times for the Stark's Park side over three spells and is the most decorated player in Rovers history. He started the 1994 Coca Cola Cup Final triumph over Celtic before scoring the first penalty in the shootout. Raith said: 'Everyone at Raith Rovers Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Rover Shaun Dennis. 'Shaun played 453 games for us and has won more winners' medals than any player in Rovers history. 'Our thoughts are with Shaun's loved ones at this sad time.' Dennis signed for his hometown team as a 12-year-old, making his name as a no-nonsense defender following his debut in 1988. He played a part in a memorable era for Rovers, winning two First Division titles and enjoying European adventures in the Uefa Cup following the Coca Cola Cup win. Dennis was eventually snapped up by Hibs, where he made over 70 appearances before returning to Raith on loan and then permanently in 2001. A Second Division triumph followed, as did a brief spell as caretaker manager at the end of the ill-fated Claude Anelka regime. Dennis was inducted into the club's hall of fame in 2017. Former Rovers team-mate Jock McStay wrote on X: 'Heartbreaking. Devastated. Can't believe this has just happened.' Hibs said: 'Hibernian FC are saddened to learn of the passing of former Hibee Shaun Dennis. 'Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Shaun.' Former Easter Road team-mate Tam McManus added: 'Was a hard big guy on the park who took no prisoners but totally different off it. 'Was a great guy who was really good company.' Rovers historian John Greer paid a poignant tribute to the Stark's Park legend. He said: 'As recently as August 2024, Shaun was the guest at Reminiscing Raith where he regaled all present with his wonderful tales of his football career. 'He also brought his grandchildren to a game last season. He received a hero's welcome at the club he loved. 'There has been a huge outpouring of love for Shaun from all his team-mates. 'All at Raith Rovers would like to send his wife Tracy and family our deepest condolences.'
