Olivia Rodrigo's rollercoaster love life - high-profile love triangle to Paddington star

Olivia Rodrigo has had a string of rumoured high-profile romances, many of which have inspired her hit songs, from her fling with Joshua Bassett to her current partner Louis Partridge As one of pop's leading voices on the agony of young love, it's fair to say Olivia Rodrigo has had her share of personal pain. 'Her first album Sour was very much written in the pit of despair, and most of the songs seemed to be about losing the same boy,' says BBC music correspondent Mark Savage. 'She was definitely in that place where you're stuck in a cycle and can't think about anyone or anything else.' ‌ With 22-year-old Olivia - who is now in a relationship with Louis Partridge - admitting that Sour was inspired by 'earth-shattering' heartbreak, she told how Drivers License was based on her own journal entries. 'I realised part of the reason I wanted to get my licence so bad was because of… this boy,' she said, sharing an excerpt from her diary. ‌ 'I always felt bad about being too young to drive over to see him.' It was widely assumed the boy in question was her ex, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett, who was rumoured to have moved on with Sabrina Carpenter after he and Olivia broke up in July 2020. ‌ 'She never confirmed any of those stories, but I'm not sure it even matters who the song is about,' says Mark. 'What matters is whether you feel what she's feeling, and with Olivia you absolutely do.' She and Joshua first met in early 2019, playing on-screen love interests Nini and Ricky, when they were 16 and 18 respectively. Regular Instagram selfies sparked speculation they had grown close off-camera, and at one point Olivia said, 'I love him so much. He's my best friend… It was like I wasn't acting.' But by the following summer, it was claimed they had split, with Olivia posting a TikTok video in which she ate a muffin with her song All I Want playing in the background. 'All I want is a good guy / Are my expectations far too high?' she sang, while captioning the clip, 'And that's on failed relationships.' ‌ Regardless of the mystery, an earlier relationship with her Bizaardvark co-star Ethan Wacker was said to have ended amicably. Though never confirmed, they were thought to have started dating in 2018, and Ethan, now 23, shared an Instagram post in January 2019 saying, 'Happy 6 months! You are the greatest.' The pair also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii, where Olivia captioned a photo, 'Heaven is a place on earth wit u.' It's thought they parted later that year, but despite deleting all their social media posts, they remained on good terms, with Olivia commenting 'He's the best!' when Ethan announced he was off to university in 2020. The following year, Olivia was reported to be seeing music producer Adam Faze. Again, it was never officially confirmed, but the two attended showbiz events together and were snapped kissing. But it was thought to have ended when Olivia unfollowed Adam on Instagram in January 2022. ‌ Soon afterwards, she was linked to DJ Zack Bia, and he attended her 19th birthday celebrations that February. However, by August the romance was said to have fizzled out, apparently due to clashing schedules. 'We hung out, we're both busy and we ended up not furthering our relationship,' Zack said. 'There was never any drama, you know?' When Olivia released fiery comeback single Vampire the following year, rumours spread that it was either about Adam, now 28, or Zack, now 29, since the lyrics suggested friction over a woman older than her. 'Went for me and not her / 'Cause girls your age know better,' she vented. ‌ Unsurprisingly, there was no official comment, and Mark says, 'We'll never know who Vampire was about, and that's probably for the best. In this kind of internet-sleuthing era, trying to guess is almost half the fun. From Olivia's point of view, keeping quiet about the subject of her songs helps grow their mystique.' When talking about her second album Guts, Olivia did reveal that a string of bad relationships had influenced the record, saying, 'Maybe I did things that maybe I shouldn't have – dated people that I shouldn't have.' And while on tour, she told fans in LA, 'I met so many people that I've dated on Instagram DM. Some of them a little questionable.' On another occasion, she spoke of a serious red flag when weighing up potential love interests. 'I always ask them if they would want to go to space… If they say yes, I don't date them,' she said. 'I just think if you want to go to space, you're a little too full of yourself.' ‌ Thankfully, Olivia's romantic status is currently far rosier, and she has been with British actor Louis Partridge for more than 18 months. After meeting through mutual friends, they were first snapped together in London in October 2023 as they shared a series of nights out. Louis, 22, who starred in the Enola Holmes films and Apple TV+ series Disclaimer, then showed up to support Olivia at iHeart Radio's Jingle Ball in New York that December, singing along with her best pals, Conan Gray and Madison Hu. In August 2024, they made their debut at Venice Film Festival, with Louis tenderly kissing Olivia on the head in one picture. They also enjoyed a lowkey outing to watch Manchester United play Chelsea in November, and surprised locals when they took a trip to north Wales the same month. ‌ Although she has avoided talking about Louis publicly, Olivia did post on his Insta page on his birthday last year, writing, 'Welcome to the 21 club angel boy!!!!' Meanwhile, the pair have looked particularly loved-up in recent months, schmoozing at the Grammys in February and the Oscars in March, while in January they joined pals Tate McRae, the Kid LAROI, Iris Apatow and The White Lotus actor Sam Nivola for a couples' break in the Caribbean. Louis was a regular supporter during Olivia's Guts World Tour as well as for her headline slot at Glastonbury, where she was also spotted on his shoulders watching Pulp play. During her Dublin show last April, many noted that she changed the lyrics of So American from 'Think I'm in love' to ''Cause I'm in love'. It was even suggested that the song, which featured on the deluxe reissue of Guts, was a message about their future plans: 'Oh God, I'm gonna marry him / If he keeps this sh*t up,' she sang. After admitting to being 'a hopeless romantic' in the past, Olivia once told how she hopes to tie the knot in the next few years. 'I just wanna be, like, 30, in a cool mid-century modern house with two babies and a husband, writing songs that I like, and having brunch with my girls on the weekends,' she said. But there could be a little more drama before she gets to that stage. 'Last time I interviewed Olivia, she told me, 'I've still got a few heartbreaks left in me,'' Mark tells us. 'I'm not sure she's quite ready to settle down just yet!' Olivia Rodrigo OK! Olivia Rodrigo calls out 'horrific' conditions facing Palestinians in Gaza

LOS ANGELES, July 16: Pop star Olivia Rodrigo is raising her voice in support of those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In a powerful message shared on her Instagram Story over the weekend, Rodrigo condemned the "horrific and completely unacceptable" conditions faced by families in Palestine. For nearly two years, Gaza has been grappling with widespread hunger, homelessness, and a lack of access to basic medical care and humanitarian aid. These dire conditions worsened after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 hostages. Israel subsequently launched a military campaign against Hamas, leading to the deaths of over 58,000 people, according to Reuters. Rodrigo expressed deep sorrow over the situation, saying, 'There are no words to describe the heartbreak I feel witnessing the devastation that is being inflicted upon innocent people in Palestine.' She continued, 'Mothers, fathers, and children in Gaza are starving, dehydrated, and being denied access to basic medical care and humanitarian aid.' The Grammy-winning artist emphasized the shared human suffering across the globe, stating, 'There is no child in Israel, Palestine, or anywhere in the world who deserves to suffer through what we're seeing these children have to endure. It is horrific and completely unacceptable. To give up on them is to give up on our shared humanity.' Rodrigo went on to announce that she had made a donation to UNICEF, encouraging her followers to do the same if they were able to contribute. "I've donated to UNICEF to help support the victims of this horrifying situation," she wrote. "I encourage you to do the same if you have the means." Rodrigo joins a growing number of celebrities speaking out about the violence in Gaza. Recently, Lana Del Rey shared that she prays for Palestine 'every day,' while Billie Eilish publicly disavowed Israel's plan to forcibly relocate Palestinians to a 'humanitarian city' built on the ruins of Rafah, calling the proposal 'horrifying.' Known for her outspoken activism, Rodrigo has consistently used her platform to address issues that matter to her. From endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election to protesting attacks on reproductive freedom at her shows, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star is unafraid to speak her mind. Last year, Rodrigo launched her Fund 4 Good, a project aimed at raising money for abortion funds globally. This initiative earned her the Catalyst for Change award from Planned Parenthood at their spring gala in April 2025. During her speech at the event, Rodrigo shared her perspective on the politicization of women's bodies: 'We live in a world that politicizes our bodies and uses harmful ideologies to deny us safety and healthcare. My greatest wish is that through organizations like Planned Parenthood and the action of everyday citizens, no woman will need to sacrifice her dreams, her health, or her humanity because of restrictive laws or lack of resources.'

A Timeline of Olivia Rodrigo & Louis Partridge's Relationship

After two albums' worth of breakup songs, fans of Olivia Rodrigo were ready to see their girl find true love — something she finally seemed to do when Louis Partridge entered the picture. More from Billboard Travis Kelce Denies That He & Taylor Swift 'Seek Attention' in Public: 'We're Just Enjoying Life' Demi Lovato & Husband Jutes Enjoy Romantic Beachside Honeymoon in Newly Shared Photos JoJo Siwa Reveals When She Realized She Had Feelings for Chris Hughes: 'I Wasn't Looking to Fall for Him' The public first became aware of the young pop star and Enola Holmes star's romance in late 2023, right after the release of Rodrigo's Billboard 200-topping sophomore album Guts, which was filled with angsty tracks many fans believed to be targeted at ex-boyfriends Adam Faze and Zack Bia. Before that came one of the biggest heartbreak albums of the decade, 2021's Sour — decidedly written about the musician's split from her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett — which featured the Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers 'Drivers License' and 'Good 4 U.' But as the Grammy winner sang on 'Enough for You,' someday she'd 'be everything to somebody else' — and that person turned out to be a certain British actor, who was previously linked to his Pistol castmate Sydney Chandler. Though Rodrigo and Partridge have kept things pretty private, the photos and videos that have been captured of them together show that the 'Deja Vu' artist rarely goes long without smiling or laughing when she's in her partner's presence, and vice versa. And fans can't get enough, with some dubbing them 'Gen Z royalty' and others comparing them to Twilight's Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. From cute date nights to supporting each other at big events, Rodrigo and Partridge have kept fans obsessed with their romance. Keep reading to see a timeline of their big moments below, and check back here for updates. The story of Rodrigo and Partridge might date back to an August interview the 'Traitor' artist gave ahead of the release of Guts, where she was challenged to read aloud her most recent DM exchange. 'My best friend Conan texted me a picture of this guy that I think is cute and I said, 'Wow, he's everything,'' Rodrigo hesitantly revealed, blushing. Rodrigo and Partridge first sparked dating rumors in October 2023, when fans saw them together in public for the first time ever. In blurry pictures snapped by one onlooker, the singer — wearing festive Halloween cat ears on her head — wraps her arms around the actor, both of them dating rumors surrounding Rodrigo and Partridge only solidified when the Brit showed up to the 2023 Jingle Ball to support the Bizaardvark alum's performance. While there, he was spotted hanging out with Rodrigo's best friends Conan Gray and Maddie Hsu and singing and dancing along to 'All-American B-tch,' after which the group all appeared to leave in the same car. One day after Jingle Ball, Rodrigo performed on Saturday Night Live and took Partridge along with her to the show's afterparty that night. Afterwards, the couple left the party venue together. Rodrigo and Partridge all but confirmed their romance by engaging in a steamy makeout sesh while making a pit stop at gas station in New York City. Other pictures from the outing capture them giggling together outside of their car, the Argylle star snapping photos of the 'Deja Vu' singer on his phone. The next day, there were reports of the couple exploring Tannersville in upstate New York. Not that fans needed it after photos of their gas-station PDA circulated online, but Rodrigo soft-launched her romance with Partridge on Instagram by sharing a photo of her playing darts with an opponent whose initials — 'L.P.' — were visibly written in chalk on a scoreboard. When Rodrigo kicked off her first-ever arena tour, of course Partridge was in the audience at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, Calif., to support her. Fan videos captured the actor walking around the venue with the singer's best friend Iris Apatow and holding his cup with his teeth in order to free up his hands to snap a video, and afterward, he posted a picture of his girlfriend performing on Instagram Stories and wrote, 'So so so good.' In an interview with British Vogue, Partridge opened up about his relationship with Rodrigo for the first time. 'Dating probably shouldn't be done in the public eye,' he told the publication. 'There's enough going on between two people. You don't need the voices of thousands of others in your head. I think she's got it a lot worse than I have … She's got tons and tons of eyes on her case.' 'If there's a load of people nattering in a room about you, you can choose to put your ear to the door to hear what they say or not,' he added. 'I think you're probably better off not letting curiosity get the better of you.' Partridge could barely wait for Rodrigo to get off stage to wrap her in an adorable bear hug at her March 19 concert in Chicago, something one fan caught on video. The arrival of the deluxe edition of Guts marked a huge milestone for Rodrigo, as it featured the very first proper love song she'd ever released in her career thus far: 'So American.' Fans were instantly positive the gushy track is all about the star's British boyfriend, with lyrics like, 'He laughs at all my jokes/ And he says I'm so American' and 'God, I'm gonna marry him/ If he keeps this sh– up.' 'GUTS (spilled) is out!!!!!' Rodrigo wrote on Instagram after dropping the song alongside four other new deluxe tracks. 'especialllyyy excited about so american.' Rodrigo and Partridge stepped out for a casual dinner date in Los Angeles, as captured in photos that circulated on social media. While the Enola Holmes star sported a simple flannel and jeans, the 'Get Him Back!' singer wore a red sundress, coat and cherry handbag. Partridge joined Rodrigo in supporting one of her besties, Tate McRae, at the 'Greedy' singer's concert in London. Sitting in the middle of the mezzanine section of the venue, the couple cuddled up while enjoying the music as if they were just two random fans in a crowd. Fans went wild when Rodrigo appeared to subtly confirm that she and Partridge have gotten serious by slightly altering the lyrics of 'So American' at one of her Guts World Tour shows in Europe. Instead of singing 'think I'm in love' as normal after the song's bridge, she belted out 'I'm so in love' — a small but eyebrow-raising change. Partridge helped his girlfriend promote the Asia and Australia legs of her Guts World Tour in a TikTok posted by Rodrigo. Listen for his voice behind the camera: Rodrigo had the sweetest comment for her boyfriend on his 21st-birthday post on Instagram: 'welcome to the 21 club angel boy!!!! 💓💓💓💓' she wrote. Rodrigo and Partridge again packed on the PDA on the streets of New York City while taking a summer stroll together. The pair linked arms, held hands and stopped to share a kiss, with the 'Vampire' artist wearing a Yankees cap and black spaghetti-strap blouse and Partridge sporting a plain white many months of dating, Rodrigo and Partridge made their first couple's appearance at an industry event by hitting the Venice International Film Festival together. Though they didn't pose on the red carpet, the singer did accompany her boyfriend to the screening of his new series Disclaimer, where she took an adorable video of the actor soaking in his applause. Plus, the pair attended a cocktail reception at the Hotel Excelsior, as a well as a post-screening reception at Palazzina Grassi. Partridge was Rodrigo's No. 1 fan at Glastonbury 2025, which the singer closed out with her headlining set on the last day of the festival. After giving his superstar girlfriend a boost on his shoulders while they watched Pulp perform earlier in the day, the actor snapped videos of Rodrigo performing from backstage and later wrote on Instagram, 'A truly special performance on such a huge scale.' 'She worked her a– off for it and couldn't be more deserving of all her success and for the great crowd that was watching,' Partridge added in his post. 'What a moment.' Olivia Rodrigo's Complete Dating History

Olivia Rodrigo has transformed from Disney star to pop queen in just a few short years. In 2021, her debut album Sour became a hit record of breakup anthems for yearners and ragers of all ages. Part of the album's power is that each song is filled with clues that fans are thrilled to examine as they try to deduce who in Rodrigo's life inspired them. The 20-year-old has had several public romances so far, including some with high-profile co-stars. Below are all the men that she is known to have dated, up to her present boyfriend, Louis Partridge. Back in her Disney Channel star days, Rodrigo worked with actor Ethan Wacker on their show Bizaardvark, where they started off as friends. The show premiered in 2016, and in 2019, the couple shared in a now-deleted Instagram that they had been dating for six months. For a while, many pictures of the couple appeared on their respective timelines, but later in 2019, they all started disappearing. Yes, the young couple had split but remained friends. However, with the release of her hit song, 'Drivers License' in 2021, Rodrigo sparked rumours that the subject of the damning lyrics was Wacker. He denied it in a now-deleted TikTok video. From Bizaardvark, Rodrigo moved on to the Disney+ series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Once again, love blossomed on set with her co-star Joshua Bassett. The pair dated from 2019 to 2020, so there was a lot of speculation that Rodrigo's songs were about Bassett as well. After they split, he went on to date pop star Sabrina Carpenter. On her song 'Driver's License,' Rodrigo sings, 'And you're probably with that blonde girl/Who always made me doubt/She's so much older than me/She's everything I'm insecure about.' Carpenter is blonde and four years older than Rodrigo. Still, Rodrigo denied that Carpenter was referenced in the track. In March 2021, the Sour artist told 'I think we've met once or twice in passing, but I've never had a conversation with her...I don't think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don't know.' Bassett is also a songwriter, and he added more fuel to the rumours. His track 'Crisis' is said to be about Rodrigo. In it, he sings, 'Half the shit you're saying's only half true/Messing with my life as a career move/I can't help but wonder why you won't make it end?' In June 2021, Bassett told GQ, 'The reality is it's kind of like a lost cause trying to talk about any of that stuff, and I refuse to feed into any of the bullshit, so I just don't. [Everyone] is asking me about Sabrina and Olivia. Why don't we focus on these women for who they are? Let's focus on the art that they're making and how great they are instead of their relationship to a boy.' Around the same time as Bassett's interview with GQ, Rodrigo started dating music producer Adam Faze. They attended the Space Jam 2 premiere together and were seen out and about being affectionate. In February 2022, they split after less than one year of dating. The former couple never confirmed they were together nor spoke about their breakup, but a source told People, 'They've been over for a bit now.' At least one fan suggested that 'Vampire' was about Faze because of the timing of the song's release. Rodrigo was spotted with Zack Bia in February 2022 at a Super Bowl party and then in New York City soon afterward. A source told E!, 'He invited her to Super Bowl parties that he was DJing that weekend, and she went to support him. They hit it off and have been casually hanging out.' By the summer, things seemed to have run their course. A source told Us Weekly in August 2022, 'Their relationship sort of fizzled. They were casually dating but haven't spent time together in a while. There were no issues—they both have different work schedules and different friend groups.' But there was of course speculation that Bia was the 'fame sucker' Rodrigo was singing about. In a September 2023 interview with GQ, Bia said, 'I don't think it's really about me. I think the internet just ran with it.' He added that he 'knows how a song gets made,' but didn't think there was any big drama in their connection. 'We hung out, we're both busy, and we ended up not furthering our relationship,' he explained. 'There was never any drama, you know?' Rodrigo and Enola Holmes actor Louis Partridge were first linked in October 2023 after being seen together in London looking very cuddly. At the time, The Sun reported that she traveled to England just to hang out with him. 'Olivia flew to London with her best pal, singer Conan Gray, but it was Louis who she came to see,' an insider said. 'They met through mutual pals earlier in the year and have been messaging quite a bit. She has spent a few days in the capital hanging out with them all, but it's been Louis who she has been inseparable from. They have been for dinners and nights out. They hit a club together on Friday night and were acting very coupley. It's really sweet to see her happy.' Partridge attended Rodrigo's Jingle Ball performance in December 2023 and was seen with her friends Conan Gray and Madison Hu. He was also at the Saturday Night Live after-party following her turn as a musical guest, and Just Jared reported they left in a car together. Sabrina Carpenter Puts Feud Rumors to Rest at Olivia Rodrigo Concert

THE RUNDOWN On Friday, Sabrina Carpenter was seen supporting Olivia Rodrigo at her BST Hyde Park concert in London. Rodrigo was headlining the event and Carpenter could be seen enjoying the music from the VIP section. Both pop stars formerly dated actor Joshua Bassett, leading to longstanding rumors of feuding or competition beginning around 2021, but it seems obvious that both Carpenter and Rodrigo have moved on. Carpenter can be seen in photos shared by the Daily Mail wearing a semi-sheer white baby doll dress and a pair of black-framed glasses. Over one shoulder she wore a red purse and was holding a glass of wine, smiling widely during the show. On stage, Rodrigo wore a black bodysuit with large torso cutouts covered in silver fringe with a pair of black boots. She was later joined on stage by Ed Sheeran. Bassett is rumored to be the subject of Rodrigo's 2021 hit song 'Driver's License,' after they dated while filming the popular show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in 2019. In 2020, Carpenter and Bassett were romantically linked, but they supposedly split in 2021. In her song, Rodrigo sings about 'that blonde girl' who 'made [her] doubt' the relationship. Rodrigo is now dating actor Louis Partridge, who she was first seen with in late 2023. Carpenter has since been linked to Shawn Mendes and Barry Keoghan, and is now supposedly single. In a 2024 interview with ELLE, Partridge dodged a question about whether Rodrigo's song 'So American' was about him, joking, 'Not my song, not my place. So I wouldn't know.' He did share, 'My girlfriend has been trying to get me into more pop recently—Chappell Roan has been on repeat.' He also said that he sees himself as a golden retriever boyfriend type. 'I think in past relationships my mind worked at a different speed to the women I've known,' he said. 'A bit slower. The way I would characterize it is like a Golden Retriever and a black cat. I can imagine being happy sitting and catching a Frisbee.'
