Detroit Tigers add RHP Geoff Hartlieb, cut Carlos Hernández after experiment is no-go

The Detroit Tigers swapped one veteran reliever for another. Right-hander Geoff Hartlieb has been selected by the Tigers from Triple-A Toledo, joining the 26-man and 40-man rosters before the series opener Thursday, July 24, against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park. The 31-year-old has six years of MLB experience, spanning a total of 80⅔ innings with five teams. He signed a minor league contract with the Tigers just 12 days ago. "He's touched the big leagues," manager A.J. Hinch said before Thursday's game. "It feels like forever. He hasn't quite settled in completely, but we know he's going to come in and be a reliable strike-thrower and hopefully get outs." NEW ARM: Tigers prospect Troy Melton on MLB debut: 'You have to make pitches' To create space for Hartlieb, the Tigers designated right-handed reliever Carlos Hernández for assignment. He lasted 38 days with the Tigers. Hernández, whom the Tigers claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies in mid-June, registered a 10.13 ERA with six walks and 13 strikeouts across 10⅔ innings in 11 games before the Tigers cut ties with him. "I think we were on the right track with what he was doing, but it wasn't working as consistently as we wanted," Hinch said. "It just wasn't the right fit at the right time. For us, right now, where we're at, we felt like a change was needed." THE BEST HITTER: Why Tigers put Riley Greene on bench after 'quite a bit of swing and miss' The newcomer doesn't appear to be a significant upgrade. Hartlieb has a 7.92 ERA with 59 walks and 80 strikeouts across 80⅔ innings in 66 games in his MLB career. He has allowed 16 earned runs in 14⅓ innings over the past three seasons with the Miami Marlins (2023), Colorado Rockies (2024) and New York Yankees (2025). Before those stops, Hartlieb pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2019-21) and New York Mets (2021). "We just got him, so we don't necessarily know him tremendously well," Hinch said. "From the other side, he's fit that role of a multi-inning reliever. Can extend out, will be a strike-thrower, can mix his pitches. We wanted a right-handed pitcher, specifically coming into this series." [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] For the Blue Jays, superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entered Thursday hitting .270 with a .789 OPS against right-handed pitchers, compared to .333 with a .978 OPS against left-handed pitchers. That's one reason why the Tigers added Hartlieb to join the bullpen. He throws three pitches: four-seam fastball, sinker and slider. Celebrate 125 seasons of the Tigers with our new book! In 2025, his fastball has averaged 95 mph, and his slider has generated a 31.3% whiff rate, but he has allowed six runs in 1⅓ innings. As a Tiger, the slider will be an important pitch for him. "Giving somebody a different look and challenging the strike zone is the biggest key," Hinch said. "Efficiency matters, strike-throwing matters. If you're going to throw that many strikes, you're going to need something to pop that the hitters struggle with, and we knew it was his slider." Patio weeds will vanish if you use 'quick and easy' method with cheap item

One woman took to the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' Facebook group to ask for advice on how to get rid of weeds between patio slabs after the summer weather saw them shoot up With recent times bringing both warm weather and the odd downpour, many are discovering their patios invaded by persistent weeds. These uninvited botanical intruders, from dandelions to chickweed, stubbornly establish themselves in the gaps between paving stones. ‌ Pulling them out manually is possible, but it's a boring and often painful chore that can play havoc with your joints. ‌ Desperate for assistance, one frustrated homeowner turned to the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' online forum seeking guidance on eliminating weeds from her patio slabs. ‌ Writing to the group, she asked: "Hi, does anyone know how to get rid of weeds between patio slabs? I think I have seen something about white vinegar. Many thanks." The flood of responses she garnered was staggering, though the most popular solution centred on using salt either solo or combined with vinegar and washing-up liquid, reports the Express. ‌ One member suggested: "Big tub of cheap table salt is about 30p last time I looked. Dissolved some in water and use that after you've pulled what you can up then it goes straight to any roots... [they] stay away for ages." Another member recommended: "Salt and white vinegar. Tip is to do this on a warm sunny day, works a treat." A third contributor revealed their method: "I poured boiling water on them and sprinkled salt on. Definitely shrivelled them up." ‌ They continued: "I then grabbed a gardening tool resembling a wire brush with a long handle, and tackled the cracks where the weeds had been flourishing but were now brown and dried up, easily removing them. It was both affordable and straightforward." Salt proves to be an effective weed destroyer, as it interferes with their moisture intake and essentially dries them out. Applying salt creates a barren patch, stopping weeds and other vegetation from sprouting in that spot for an extended period. ‌ Bargain hunters can snap up table salt at rock-bottom prices, with Waitrose selling it for 75p, Sainsbury's for 69p, and Ocado for a mere 40p. Mrs Hinch enthusiasts have also suggested alternative remedies including boiling water, white vinegar used alone, and employing a weed burner. One person revealed her technique: "I have a portable weed burner that works well." Another recommended a straightforward approach: "Boiling water works a treat. Try it." A third person offered her tip: "White vinegar works overnight. Also safer for pets."

MLB-best Tigers limping into All-Star Game break with season-high, 4-game losing streak after sweep

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers were showered with a smattering of boos as they walked off the field for the last time before the All-Star Game. Seattle defeated Detroit 8-4 on Sunday, sealing a three-game sweep that gave the Major League-leading Tigers a season-high, four-game losing streak. 'We've stumbled a little going into the break,' Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty acknowledged. 'But I think if you told everyone in here and in Detroit what record we'd have in the first half, where we would be in the division, where we would be overall and that we would have six All-Stars, I think a lot of people would be happy with that.' The Tigers are 59-38, giving them the best record going into the All-Star Game for the seventh time in team history and first since 2006. Detroit has an 11 1/2-game lead over second-place Minnesota in the Central, giving it the largest lead in the division or league at the break in franchise history. The Tigers will be represented by a team-record six All-Stars: pitchers Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Baez, second baseman Gleyber Torres and infielder Zach McKinstry. Detroit even had its bat boy, Frankie Boyd, voted into the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday night in Atlanta. 'I want our guys to be proud and also hungry,' manager A.J. Hinch said. The Tigers will definitely want to get a bad taste out of their mouths after giving up 35 runs over three games to the Mariners, who scored 15 runs in the ninth innings of the three games. 'We didn't finish the game, which isn't our norm,' Hinch said. 'We've been very good at playing the entire game.' The Tigers will have 65 games left in the regular season to hold on for their first division title in 11 years and to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs, hoping to win a World Series for the first time since 1984. Ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, general manager Scott Harris may make moves to bolster the bullpen and perhaps the lineup. Detroit will have four days off before resuming play at Texas on Friday night and Hinch is thankful for the timing. 'There's been a lot going on around our team, and after this weekend, we could all use a break,' Hinch said. 'Six guys are going to get a little bit of energy from the big stage of the All-Star Game and the rest of us will get some rest.' ___ AP MLB:
