Irresponsible Isla Fisher is in cloud-cuckoo land thinking women don't need marriage – here's why we MUST tie the knot
ISLA Fisher is in cloud-cuckoo land when she tells women not to bother with marriage. In the wake of finalising her divorce from the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, she re-posted this on Instagram: For all the men who say, 'why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?' 5 Here's an update for you: 'Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realise it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage.' She's funny, I'll give her that. Fisher's post was branded 'savage' but telling women not to bother getting married is also reckless, irresponsible and out of touch. For the majority of women with children, marriage is a safety net and an essential aspect of financial security for them and their kid's future. Isla Fisher is clearly bouncing back after the breakdown of her marriage and feeling cheerful enough to post devil-may-care statements. Whether her sausage-and-pig quip was a light-hearted joke or a savage dig at her ex-husband's manhood (as some have suggested) who knows. Last week when both Fisher and Baron-Cohen were photographed at Wimbledon, attending separately and narrowly avoiding an awkward public run-in, she was relaxed enough to cheekily tag him on social media: 'Hang on? Who's watching the kids? @sachabaroncohen' The former Home and Away actress is now a movie star in her own right, and for the past 14 years has been married to the millionaire Borat actor and comedian. With or without Baron Cohen, 53, the 49-year-old is financially independent – and will no doubt be even wealthier after the multi-million-dollar divorce settlement. But for most women the breakdown of a relationship looks a lot less rosy. In fact, many remain in unhappy marriages because of the financial upheaval of breaking up a family and the uncertainty of the future. All The signs Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher had secretly split from girls' nights out to hiding ring finger Even pursuing child maintenance after divorce can be stressful, with ex-partners not bothering to make payments to support their children. If you're not married the situation is even bleaker. One of my closest friends has three children under ten with her long-term partner. Like Isla and Sacha, they had been together 14 years and she now finds herself single. After years of suspected infidelity, he recently moved out and has set up home with his new, younger girlfriend. My friend had always wanted to get married, both from a commitment perspective and for financial security, but he wasn't keen. They bought a house together, lived together, had three children together, but never made it legal. 'Now I'm left high and dry,' she tells me. 'The emotional fallout has been horrendous, but I hadn't realised I'd struggle financially like this. He works, I work – I thought having a double income would help. But I'm bringing up the children and he doesn't contribute a penny. I guess if we were married, I'd have more rights.' She's certainly right there. Both during the marriage and if fate so has it, after divorce, married individuals have better financial security. They are entitled to marriage allowance during the relationship and all sorts of other tax benefits such as avoiding capital gains tax. Should the marriage end, assets are divided fairly, one half may have a claim to a share of the other's pension, and if one half earns significantly less than the other then he or she could receive spousal maintenance. I'm a single mother and have brought my 4-year-old son up alone since his birth. We've never had a penny in financial support and that's harder than it sounds. Every mortgage instalment, every council tax, water, gas and electricity bill, the Christmas presents, the swimming lessons or football lessons, every aspect of parenting is on my back. 5 5 Tone-deaf The childcare costs when you're a working single mother are astronomical. If you get sick, you can't afford to take time off, because you're the bread-winner. You don't go for drinks out or dinners or date nights because the focus is on making a living and spending time with your child, and anyway getting a babysitter is a luxury! It's my choice. My son's father has never been in our lives. We are a happy (if small) family of two, and the bond I have with my child is incredibly close. But the responsibility is exhausting – knowing that when your child grows up and needs an allowance, or wants to go to the cinema with friends, or when they get to university, the finances will still be all on you. That's why Isla Fisher's cheeky 'don't bother with marriage ladies' strikes me as tone-deaf and irresponsible. Until recently, getting married was very much about security for women. You couldn't risk getting pregnant out of wedlock, you needed the security of your husband's roof and income, and you didn't want the public shame of being an unmarried mother. In fact, until the end of the 19th century, a woman and everything she owned was basically her husband's property. It was only the landmark legislation in 1882 (the Married Women's Property Act) that gave women the right to own, acquire and dispose of their own property. Everything has changed in the past few decades. We've had women's lib, abortion rights, endless equality legislation, birth control, and far less social stigma around cohabiting and sex before marriage. We have far more freedom to forge a career, earn a living and make our own life choices. Unsurprisingly, marriage rates have been in decline. 'Think about words' In the 1970s, approximately 7 in 10 people over the age of 16 were married, and by 2024 this figure had fallen to around 4 in 10. It's predicted that marriage rates will continue to drop, with only around 3 in 10 people married by 2050. When my friend says she regrets not getting married - she's absolutely right. Although it's a more level playing field than in previous decades, when an unmarried couple separates they don't have the same legal rights to financial support and property division as married couples or those in civil partnerships. The general rule is that each person keeps their own assets, and joint assets are divided, based on ownership and contribution. Some unmarried couples draw up cohabitation agreements, but many do not – they drift into years of living together, raising a family, buying property, and then end up in terrible conflict and financial strife when their relationship ends. The Fisher/Baron Cohen post-divorce settlement was worth a rumoured $75 million dollars but one thing's for sure: they're not short of a few quid. They won't need to argue about who moves out of the family home and who rents nearby – because they own multiple properties and have been living between Perth, Sydney, London and Hollywood. I know countless women who end up renting or sofa surfing with friends or family after divorce. This celeb couple won't be quibbling about who covers the mortgage or the food bills, who buys the children's new shoes or the school uniforms. Life after divorce clearly suits Isla, she's looking radiant and has her mojo back. She and Baron Cohen are amicably co-parenting, declaring 'we remain friends and committed to co-parenting our wonderful children'. Whatever ended their marriage, the wounds are healing and Isla is clearly excited about her post-divorce freedom. Nonetheless, she might want to think about her words. Forget 'buying the cow or getting the milk for free' - for us everyday women, the break-up is when the hard work really begins…and sadly, if we haven't bought the pig, we're not entitled to so much as a slice of bacon.

Is Home and Away the next Aussie soap to face the axe? ANOTHER star rumoured to be leaving the show amid mass exodus
It appears Home and Away is losing yet another beloved character, leading fans to wonder whether it may be the next soapie to leave screens. After news broke that Juliet Godwin is saying goodbye to the beloved Aussie series, rumours are circulating that another cast member is eyeing the door. According to reports, Matt Evans, who plays Theo Poulos in the series, is set to leave Summer Bay. Matt, 28, has been a regular feature on the show for three and a half years, which is longer than the usual three-year contract most stars are said to start on. However, despite being seen on set in Palm Beach in April, the star recently underwent a massive hair transformation, leading fans to believe that he's not returning to the series. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. On long-running shows, stars are often not allowed to drastically change their appearance, hence the speculation over Matt's spot on Home and Away. The actor revealed his new look on Instagram in a slew of pictures which showed him ditching his long locks for a shorter hairdo. 'Baby I'm back, @sofia_salonher nailed it,' Matt captioned the post, which showed him post-chop. The hair stylist also shared a picture of his fresh cut, adding that she was getting him 'LA ready' - another sign that Matt may be leaving the soap and eyeing up opportunities abroad. Fans were quick to question Matt's career future in the comments section. 'Really suits you! I love it! But I hope this doesn't mean the end of Theo on Home and Away? Just a theory, but usually cast aren't allowed drastic appearance changes whilst filming,' one person wrote. Another person asked: 'Will you still be on HAA (Home and Away) with this look?' 'Isn't his three-year contract up?' one person questioned. The news of Matt's potential exit from the show points to a larger problem in the soapie sphere: could Home and Away be the next TV series to get the axe? Neighbours made headlines in February after it was revealed the show would be leaving screens a second time around, less than two years after it was first revived. The Australian soap opera is currently finishing up filming after production company Fremantle failed to agree on a new deal with Amazon. The final ever episode will air at the end of 2025, with fans forced to say goodbye to Ramsay Street.

Ada Nicodemou doesn't look like this anymore! Home and Away star reveals her very puffy visage as fans ask 'What have you done to your face?'
Ada Nicodemou stepped out with a rather 'swollen' face as she enjoyed a romantic getaway this week. The Home and Away star, 48, took to Instagram on Thursday to share a series of loved-up photos with her beau and co-star, James Stewart, 49, on a romantic weekend away. The couple looked very chuffed to be in each other's company on their whistle-stop holiday on the New South Wales South Coast. 'A well earned weekend away after working extremely hard for the last few weeks (on top of being really sick with influenza),' Ada captioned the romantic photos. However, it wasn't the tranquil rural scenes, or the couple's palpable affection, that captured some fans' attention. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. One eagle-eyed fan noticed that Ada was sporting a much puffier visage than Home and Away fans have come to know over her 25-year stint on the long-running soap. 'What have you done to your face?' the follower questioned, while another jumped in suggesting that Ada may have recently had cosmetic surgery. 'Yes, what work have you had to your face?' they asked. Others, however, were quick to point out how fresh-faced and rested Ada appeared in the photos, after her recent illness. 'Look at those happy faces. Beautiful. I love seeing happy people,' one fan offered. 'Wow, looking very refreshed,' another swooned, while a third offered a similar: 'That's lovely. You look both happy and relaxed.' The post comes after claims emerged, back in 2018, that Ada had undergone a 'full body upgrade.' Speaking to Woman's Day at the time, surgeon Dr Meaghan Heckenberg claimed she believed Ada had 'rhinoplasty, muscle-relaxing injections and dermal fillers'. 'Ada looks like she's had rhinoplasty and probably some muscle-relaxing injections and dermal fillers to give her that fresh look,' Dr Heckenberg said. 'An eyebrow lift can also be achieved by careful placement of muscle-relaxing injections, such as Botox or Dysport. Of course, she benefits from her Mediterranean heritage, so she's got great skin anyway.' Dr Heckenberg has not treated the actress herself, and Daily Mail Australia contacted Ada for comment at the time of the report. In 2019, Ada confirmed she had undergone breast augmentation after years of speculation.

Hollywood star who has been calling America home for the last 19 years emerges in Sydney - as the heartbreaking reason for her relocation is revealed
A former Home and Away star who moved to the United States almost two decades ago has been spotted back in Australia — and she is here to stay. Tammin Sursok, who appeared on the Channel Seven soap opera from 2000 to 2004, stepped out in Sydney on Wednesday with her two daughters, Phoenix, 11, and Lennon, six, who she shares with husband Sean McEwen. The 41-year-old actress, who will officially move back home next year, looked radiant in a long-sleeved denim jumpsuit, paired with patent leather loafers and mismatched socks, during an outing at Manly Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches. She paired her look with a matching denim duffel bag from Sportsgirl and finished the ensemble with black-framed sunglasses, red nail polish, and dainty gold jewellery. Her hair was elegantly styled in loose waves, and she opted for a soft makeup palette with a nude lip. The trio played on the equipment, with the Pretty Little Liars star seen laughing on the seesaw with Lennon. Tammin was later seen having an impromptu photoshoot, leaning against a pine tree while modelling her $40 bag. She ensured she got the best shot as she checked each photograph and gave directions on her best angles to the photographer. Just hours after her playdate in the park with her children, the family were seen hosting a Play-Doh x Barbie Fashion set launch. The Sursok gang were all smiles as they rubbed shoulders with the likes of Jasmine Stefanovic while attending the Langham High Tea in Sydney. But while Tammin has put on a brave face and kept herself busy with work, her mother Julie may have recently revealed the heartbreaking reason the actress is back home in Australia. Daily Mail Australia understands the soap star and her family will be moving back to Australia in January 2026 to spend more time with her ageing parents, Julie and Daryl. Daily Mail Australia understands the soap star and her family will be moving back to Australia in January 2026 to spend more time with her ageing parents, Julie and Daryl Tammin is currently in Sydney to organise work and get schooling sorted for her daughters ahead of their relocation. According to her mother's social media, Daryl is currently battling Alzheimer's disease. The Sursok matriarch revealed the news in March when she shared a video montage to her Instagram account. The clip featured several photos of Julie and Daryl cuddling up together and having fun throughout their many years as a couple. Julie, who is a best-selling author, captioned the video with some hopeful words about the 'battle ahead'. 'Hanging onto these memories. We have a battle ahead but we are strong and positive. Things will be alright,' she wrote. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, with early symptoms including memory loss that gradually worsens over time, according to Mayo Clinic. In advanced stages, loss of brain function can cause dehydration and poor nutrition, with the worst cases resulting in death. Alzheimer's is a biological process which begins with the appearance of a build-up of proteins in the form of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Over time, brain cells begin to die and the organ shrinks. While there is no cure, there are medicines available that can improve symptoms and slow the decline in thinking.
