M-bike rides are grandma's cancer ‘therapy'

Compiled by ARFA YUNUS, and R. ARAVINTHAN NEITHER age nor illness has slowed down 56-year-old Syarifah Mohamed, who rides solo across hundreds of kilometres on her motorcycle. A mother of four and breast cancer survivor, Syarifah turned to biking as a form of therapy after being diagnosed with stage-three cancer in 2016. According to Harian Metro, she underwent 23 sessions of chemotherapy between 2017 and 2019, which forced her to resign from her job as a petrol station cashier. 'During recovery, while I was still weak, I stumbled upon a motorcycle community online and felt inspired to explore the country on two wheels,' she recalled. Syarifah began with a humble Honda EX5, later riding her children's Yamaha bikes before buying a SYM Jet 14 scooter of her own. Now a grandmother of five, Syarifah enjoys her weekend rides alone, relishing the freedom to stop wherever she wants, whether to eat, pray or take in the scenery. Last October, she upgraded to a Modenas Dominar D400, seeking better comfort for longer journeys. Though she still experiences occasional numbness after extended rides, Syarifah no longer takes medication and continues with regular health checks. 'Riding makes me feel alive and gives me a sense of freedom. After surviving cancer, I've realised I want to spend my time doing what truly brings me joy,' she said. > Singer Nabila Razali celebrated her husband Nik Iruwan's birthday with a touching post on Instagram, expressing gratitude for leading their family with his love and tenderness. 'Thank you for being the man who leads our family with compassion,' she wrote, as quoted by Kosmo!. The 33-year-old reflected on how fatherhood has softened Nik Iruwan, once known for his stoic demeanour. Since the arrival of their son five months ago, even the smallest things like baby socks and yawns have begun to stir his emotions. 'Fatherhood has gently transformed your soul in the most beautiful way. I've witnessed this new side of you over the past few months,' she shared. Nabila praised his selflessness and devotion, recalling quiet moments when he checks on both her and the baby in the middle of the night, and still finds ways to make her laugh despite only getting two hours of sleep. 'You've embraced this new chapter with love and strength. I fall in love with you all over again, every day,' the post continued. Nabila and Nik Iruwan, a businessman from Kelantan, tied the knot on Nov 18, 2023. They welcomed their baby boy in December, though they have kept his name and face private for now. Elderly man dies after being hit by lorry while exiting mosque compound

KAMPAR: An elderly man was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a lorry at Km26.5, Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur, while he was on his way home from Friday prayers at the mosque today. The incident, which occurred around 2pm, claimed the life of Mazlan Ahmad, 68, who was riding a Honda EX5 motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining severe injuries while exiting the compound of Masjid Jamek Kampung Jeram. Kampar district police chief, Superintendent Mohamad Nazri Daud, said initial investigations revealed that the victim's motorcycle was struck by a Nissan lorry driven by a 25-year-old man travelling from Simpang Pulai to Bidor. "The victim suddenly emerged from the Masjid Jamek Kampung Jeram area and was then hit by the lorry from behind. "It is believed that he entered the main road without stopping, resulting in a collision with the lorry, which was travelling in the lane heading towards Kuala Lumpur," he said in a statement today. Nazri added that the lorry driver was uninjured and that further investigations are underway under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The victim's body was sent to Kampar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A video from a vehicle's dashboard camera showing the incident has since gone viral on social media. The footage captures the victim, clad in a sarong and kopiah, riding the motorcycle before being struck by the lorry.

Op Lejang: Along Jap Gang busted for stealing old vehicles

KLANG: Police arrested four local men from the Along Jap Gang who are believed to be involved in the theft of old vehicles around South Klang from April 10 to 30. Selangor Deputy Police Chief DCP Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan said the suspects, aged between 25 and 40 who have been active since the end of last year, were arrested separately through Op Lejang. He said apart from South Klang, the suspects were also found to be active in stealing vehicles in North Klang, Shah Alam and Kuala Selangor by targeting old cars such as Perodua Kancil, Proton Iswara, Proton Iriz as well as motorcycles including Honda EX5 and Yamaha Y15. 'Also found along with the suspect were six vehicles including one car frame, six motorcycles and one frame. Checks revealed that all the suspects had 30 previous criminal records related to crimes, followed by 22 drug-related cases,' he said at a press conference at the South Klang District Police Headquarters here today. Mohd Zaini said investigations found that the stolen vehicles were not sold but were used daily by the suspects after changing the registration number and stealing other vehicles to get spare parts. He said the modus operandi of the group was to chance upon the negligence of the public who left their keys on vehicles to commit crimes and only used basic techniques to steal the vehicles. 'With this arrest, police believe they have successfully solved eight cases of theft of motorcycles and nine old vehicles in the South Klang area and nearby districts,' he said. Mohd Zaini said the suspect was found to be positive for methamphetamine-type drugs and the case was being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code.
