Failed Towing Attempt Causes Unoccupied Car To Crash Into Restaurant Twice
It takes a lot of skill, or lack thereof, to crash a car you're not even driving. In this case, a towing attempt gone horribly wrong resulted in the vehicle intended to be towed crashing into a restaurant not just once, but twice. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office not only tells us how it all went down, but it shared security camera footage that shows the whole thing. On July 30, a maroon Mercury Montego parked in front of AutoZone in University Place, Washington. The driver left it there overnight, telling employees that he would be back to tow it away since it wasn't running well. He returned at 3:45 a.m. in a white Honda Pilot with a tow dolly to follow through on his promise. It wasn't until 5:15 that the driver began pulling the car not on the dolly, but using a tow rope, which snapped before he even got out of the lot. He tried to secure the car again, but failed epically at 5:50 when the car rolled back across the lot and crashed into the Pho and Teriyaki restaurant next to the AutoZone. The man made a valiant effort to stop the car from the outside using muscles and sheer force of will, but to no avail. He jumped away from the car right before the crash and appeared to avoid injury. That would be bad enough, but things got much worse. Read more: These Are The Dumbest Car Crashes You've Ever Seen But Wait, There's More The Honda Pilot then pulled up in front of the restaurant, and the driver attached the tow rope once again. He succeeded in pulling the car to the other side of the lot, only for it to roll back across the lot and crash into the restaurant a second time. Once again, he pulled it away, only for the Montego to get caught up along a retaining wall and curb thanks to an amazingly long tow rope, leaving him unable to control it. At this point, he abandoned the car, which was now likely damaged beyond any repair you could buy at AutoZone, and left the scene. There are so many questions here. Why didn't he use the dolly he was towing behind the Pilot? Why did he continue to trust the tow rope that kept failing with ever more disastrous results? Why did he use such a long tow rope? Why didn't the woman who got out of the Pilot during the third attempt help at all? Also, kudos to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office for using the perfect soundtrack for this video: "Yakety Sax," better known as the Benny Hill theme. They are investigating this fiasco as a hit-and-run, which is appropriate, and amazing considering the car that hit the restaurant didn't even have a driver. This joins our list of the dumbest car crashes we've ever seen. Want more like this? Join the Jalopnik newsletter to get the latest auto news sent straight to your inbox... Runaway car hits Washington business multiple times in DIY tow-job gone very wrong
Surveillance video captured a failed self-tow in University Place, Washington, where a runaway car hit the same storefront multiple times before the would-be towers fled the scene. Pierce County sheriff's deputies were called to Pho and Teriyaki around 6 a.m. on July 30 after reports that a car had plowed into the restaurant. The maroon sedan was no longer inside the building but sat abandoned elsewhere in the same parking lot. An investigation involving the review of surveillance video showed that the driver of the sedan parked near AutoZone in the same strip mall at about 5:45 p.m. the day before the incident. Deputies learned the driver of the vehicle told store employees he would return and tow the vehicle away. At about 3:45 a.m., video shows a white Honda Pilot with a trailer dolly backing up to the broken-down vehicle and attempting to pull it away. 4 The incident was called into the police around 6 a.m. on July 30. Pierce County Sheriff's Office 4 After plowing into the restaurant, the maroon sedan was no longer inside the building, rather abandoned somewhere else in the parking lot. Pierce County Sheriff's Office An hour and a half later, the vehicle was finally pulled from the stall using a tow strap, which snapped once the vehicle was towed to the other end of the parking lot. The driver appeared to try and secure the vehicle again, but things got worse when the strap broke again. After the strap broke a second time, the car started to roll back toward the building and the driver was seen trying to stop the vehicle before it smashed into the restaurant. 4 The sedan had been in the plaza since the evening before the incident. Pierce County Sheriff's Office Undeterred, the driver tried again, nearly reaching the lot's exit before the strap failed a third time, sending the sedan back into the restaurant. On a third attempt, the driver and a female passenger freed the car, steered it toward the exit, then clipped a retaining wall and curb. The suspect ultimately gave up and left the vehicle behind before leaving the scene. 4 According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, the crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Pierce County Sheriff's Office Fox News Digital has asked the sheriff's office whether any arrests or charges have been made. Still, the restaurant suffered significant damage, the sheriff's office said, and the crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run.

The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is bigger and smarter, just don't expect more power
Hyundai's flagship SUV gets bigger and better for 2026, adding an array of thoughtful features and its first model with meaningful off-road capacity. The Palisade is a seven- or eight-seat SUV that competes with vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Grand Highlander. It comes with front- or all-wheel drive. A gasoline model is in dealerships now, with a hybrid arriving later this year. Palisade prices start at $38,935 for a front-drive model. The new XRT Pro model, with features including AWD and all-terrain tires, starts at $49,370. A Palisade hybrid arrives later this year. Prices for it will start at $43,660. All prices exclude a $1,495 destination charge. While the '26 Palisade is heavier than last year's model, it won't offer more power until the hybrid goes on sale. 2026 Hyundai Palisade selected trim levels and prices Palisade SE FWD, $38,935 Palisade SEL AWD, $43,440 Palisade XRT Pro AWD, $49,370 Palisade Calligraphy AWD, $56,060 Palisade Hybrid Blue SEL FWD, $$43,660 Palisade Hybrid SEL AWD, $$45,660 Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD, $58,280 Source: Edmunds. Prices exclude $1,495 destination charge What's new? What's better? The 2026 Palisade is based on a new architecture it shares with Hyundai's midsize Santa Fe SUV. It's noticeably bigger than the previous model, with a longer wheelbase and shorter front overhang. The Wheelbase grew 2.7 inches. Overall length increased 2.5. Height and width grew 0.2 and 0.6 inch, respectively. The Palisade remains shorter than key competitors like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Toyota Grand Highlander. It leads the group in passenger space, however. Cargo room behind the third row of seats rates in the middle of the pack. The Palisade's profile is recognizable from the previous generation. New touches include geometric fender flares and vertical DRLs and taillights. The outdoorsy XRT Pro model is new, adding capability to a trim package on the XRT. Functional changes include an electronic limited-slip differential, all-terrain tires and front and rear fascia modifications to improve approach and departure angles. The XRT Pro has four chassis-mounted recovery hooks. 2026 Hyundai Palisade key features Seats 7 or 8 Lighted second-row seat belt receivers D-pillar grab handles UV-C sterilizer for devices Power adjustable second- and third-row seats Factory-installed dash camera with four-day memory 100w USB-C charging ports Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Nappa leather seating 14-speaker Bose audio Electronic limited slip differential on XRT Pro All-terrain tires on XRT Pro New pickup truck reviews: This Ram 1500 truck may be the most reliable of 2025 but is it worth buying? Driving impressions The Palisade is roomy and quiet on the road. Power is adequate, but not a selling point. The ride was smooth on-road. The XRT Pro I drove scrambled up steep inclines of loose clay and negotiated a series of bumps and hollows that frequently left one wheel suspended without undue drama. Its suspension absorbed surface-street impacts well, but I wouldn't advise rock crawling. Steep hills, ruts and low-traction surfaces were easily navigable. The 3.5L V6 generates 287 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque, the same as last year's 3.8L V6 did in the smaller 2025 Palisade. The engine is linked to a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid will be the premium drivetrain, with 329 hp and 339 pound-feet of torque. Interior look and feel The interior is roomy and trimmed in materials that would look at home on a pricier vehicle from a ritzier brand. Armrests, doors and dash — the spots you're most likely to look and touch — were wrapped in soft, attractive materials. Controls include conventional switches and dials for key climate and audio functions. The touch screen is big, clear and reasonably responsive. XRT was embossed on the head rests, and jagged lines on the seat backs recall mountain vistas. Front and rear video cameras are useful for parking and on trails. The view turns off around 4 mph, though: fine for parking lots, but too low to be really useful off-road. What could be better? The gasoline-only Palisade's acceleration is adequate, but not a strong point. Commuters with heavily traveled routes may wish for more on-ramp oomph, or wait for reviews of the hybrid arriving later this year. The XRT Pro provides more off-road capability than the previous Palisade SRT, but that's a low bar to clear. Its trail view cameras shut off at a very low speed and frequently left me seeking a forward view that was no longer available on a short off-road route. Why buy a 2026 Hyundai Palisade? The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is a roomy and elegant three-row SUV. It packs a lot of passenger space into an easy to park footprint. It looks good inside and out. I expect other automakers will scramble to match unique features like power sliding third-row seats, lighted second-row seat belt receivers and a factory-installed dashcam with memory. 2026 Hyundai Palisade at a glance Front- or all-wheel drive full-size SUV Seats seven or eight Base price: $38,935. Boy, 6, critically injured after huge piece of ASPHALT flew through car windshield and struck him
A six-year-old boy was critically injured on a busy Las Vegas thoroughfare when a chunk of asphalt flew off a passing vehicle and smashed into the car he was riding in. The freak accident occurred on Monday at about 7:43am while the child was riding in the backseat of a 2017 Honda Pilot heading northbound on Durango Drive with the driver and another child inside the car, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. That's when a 'large portion of asphalt became dislodged' from a vehicle passing in the other direction, flew through the Honda's windshield and struck the boy. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and took the child to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada with critical injuries. Both the driver, identified as Makayla Engstrum, 34, and the second passenger, a four-year-old boy, were unharmed, police said. Engstrum, whose relationship to the two boys is unclear, declined to comment on the horrifying ordeal when reached by the Daily Mail. Police haven't released the names of the two boys. The accident remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Collision Investigation Division. The area was closed in both directions on Monday for the investigation.

6-year-old critical after ‘large portion' of asphalt goes through windshield in Las Vegas crash
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 6-year-old is in critical condition after 'a large portion of asphalt' went through the windshield of a vehicle and hit him. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the area of South Durango Drive and Peace Way shortly before 7:45 a.m. on Monday, July 28. Evidence at the scene and witness statements show a 2017 Honda Pilot, driven by a 34-year-old woman, was traveling north on Durango Drive. A 'large portion of asphalt' became 'dislodged' from a vehicle driving south on Durango and entered the northbound lanes, hitting the Honda. The asphalt piece went through the windshield of the vehicle and hit a 6-year-old boy sitting in the back seat. Medical personnel took the child to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, which police also described as life-threatening injuries. He remained in critical condition on Monday afternoon. The driver of the Honda was not impaired, police said. Another passenger, a 4-year-old boy, sustained no injuries. Police asked that drivers avoid the area as this is an ongoing investigation. As of 8 a.m., the RTC of Southern Nevada said Durango Drive was closed in both directions at Peace Way and urged drivers to use other routes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
