35 yrs on, 32 get 5 years' RI for 1990 caste violence in Agra village
Agra: Over three decades after caste violence broke out in Panwari and nearby villages in Agra following controversy over a Dalit wedding procession, a local court on Friday sentenced 32 men to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the case. Delivering the 97-page verdict, the special SC/ST court of Judge Pushkar Upadhyay also imposed a fine of ₹41,000 on each convict. Half of this amount will be given to the affected Dalit families as compensation. The sentencing came three days after the court convicted 35 men and acquitted 15 others for lack of evidence. Of the original 72 accused, 22 died during the prolonged trial. While 32 convicts were taken into custody on Friday, non-bailable warrants were issued against the remaining three for not appearing in court. The case, titled State vs Vipti Ram and others, relates to the violence that unfolded on June 21–22, 1990. The trigger was a Dalit groom riding a horse during his wedding procession in Panwari, which led to objections from a group of Jat men. An altercation followed, and the next day, both sides exchanged gunfire, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Soni Ram Jat. Several Dalit homes were torched in the aftermath. The violence prompted the heavy deployment of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police forces. A month-long curfew was imposed to bring the situation under control. Then-Congress leader and former PM Rajiv Gandhi, along with Sonia Gandhi, had visited Panwari village after the violence. A case was registered at Kagarol police station by then-SHO Omveer Singh Rana. Charges were framed under IPC sections 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 144 (joining unlawful assembly with a weapon), 325 (causing grievous hurt), and sections 3/2/5 of the SC/ST Act. Additional district govt counsel Hemant Dixit said, "At least 200–250 people were present at the spot in Akola. A total of 72 were named in the case, and 31 prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial." During Friday's hearing, the defence side argued for leniency, stating that the convicted men are now aged between 80 and 85, come from agrarian backgrounds, and have no prior criminal record. BJP MLA Chaudhary Babu Lal and seven others were acquitted in 2022 after key witnesses turned hostile and the original case diary went missing. Dixit countered the defence side's arguments, saying, "All the accused were young at the time of the incident. The violence in Akola was so brutal that it led to a mass exodus of Dalit families. Therefore, we demanded maximum punishment." Meanwhile, sources said that the convicts plan to move the Allahabad high court against the verdict. " No proper investigation was done after the incident. Things are peaceful now — the Dalit families who left have returned, built homes, and we live in harmony today," an associate of one of the convicts said.

Offset files for spousal support from Cardi B's amid divorce battle
Rapper Offset has put forth a completely new request in his ongoing divorce battle with estranged wife Cardi B . The rapper has filed for an amended divorce response as the case goes on, meaning that he's requesting spousal support from his soon-to-be ex-wife. The star couple, who had been married since 2017, officially filed for divorce last year, after hitting multiple rough patches in their marriage. As per TMZ, Offset has put in a request to ensure that Cardi B starts paying him spousal support, among other things such as joint custody of their children as well as using her house as the main residence for their children. This new request was reportedly put in earlier this month. Cardi B had once filed for divorce in 2020; however, the two quickly reconciled, prompting her to withdraw her request. She finally filed for divorce yet again in August 2024, and the case has been going on ever since. Chargesheet filed against Dubai woman for entering Bollywood actor's house
Mumbai: The Khar police filed a chargesheet on Wednesday against a 47-year-old Dubai resident who illegally entered actor Aditya Roy Kapur 's Bandra (West) flat on May 26. Gajala Siddiqui, who is married to a businessman, claimed to be a devoted fan of Kapur and said she had met him at a Dubai institution's inauguration in 2017, although the actor does not remember this encounter. She said she obtained the actor's address through an internet search. The incident happened between 6pm and 7.30pm when Siddiqui travelled by taxi from Mumbai International Airport after arrival and reached Kapur's home in Rizvi Heights. "The chargesheet was filed after we gathered details about Siddiqui's intention and purpose of her visit and how she managed to get hold of the actor's address. She claimed she discovered the actor's residential address through an internet search, travelled to Mumbai on Monday without informing her family," said a police officer of the Khar police station. The filed chargesheet includes statements from the actor's house help, Sangita Pawar (49), the society manager, and his manager, along with CCTV evidence. "Our investigation revealed that Siddiqui departed without her mobile phone. Her family and husband were unaware of her location until the police station contacted them about the case. The officer indicated that the court will decide about releasing her passport and permitting her return to Dubai. Siddiqui informed police that she took a cab from the airport to the address she found online. At 6pm, Siddiqui entered the flat after convincing the house help, Sangita Pawar (49). In the complaint, Pawar said: "I was alone at home. At 6 pm, the doorbell rang. When I answered, I found a woman at the door. The woman asked if it was the residence of actor Aditya Roy Kapur. When I confirmed it, the woman said she had brought clothes and other gifts for the actor. I believed her and let her in after I informed that the actor is out for shooting." When Kapur returned, he was told about the visitor but said he did not recognise her. "She tried to approach the actor, prompting him to leave the house and contact society manager Jayashree Dunkdu. Dunkdu then informed the actor's manager, Shruti Rao, who quickly arrived in the flat and contacted the Khar police. When I asked the woman to leave, she refused and insisted on staying at the actor's residence," Pawar said in the FIR. The situation continued for 90 minutes at Kapur's residence before his house help alerted his managers and the police. Siddiqui, who brought gifts and clothing for Kapur, would not leave without meeting him.

RBI says diversification of forex reserves is most critical approach amid geopolitical risks
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that diversification remains the most critical approach in managing the country's foreign exchange reserves against the backdrop of the 'weaponisation of reserves' during times of conflict. In its 2024-25 report, the central bank highlighted the importance of 'spreading reserves across various currencies, asset classes, and jurisdictions' to mitigate risks arising from geopolitical conflicts and financial market shocks. RBI's Department of External Investments and Operations reported a 3.4% increase in forex reserves during 2024-25, following an 11.7% rise the previous year. To strengthen resilience against volatility, the RBI continued exploring new asset classes and jurisdictions for deploying foreign currency assets, aligning its strategy with the three traditional objectives of 'safety, liquidity, and return.' The report flagged the growing threat of the 'weaponisation of reserves,' where sanctions restrict access and usability of foreign assets, prompting RBI and other central banks to consider alternative strategies for reserve management.
