Celtic vs Newcastle United LIVE score and goal updates from Parkhead friendly
Celtic will start their Scottish Premiership title defence and quest for five-in-a-row in just a couple of weeks. And Brendan Rodgers and his Bhoys are stepping up their preparations ahead of the big kick off with a Battle of Britain friendly. Eddie Howe was once targeted by the Hoops for the manager's job but swerved it, paving the way for Ange Postecoglou. It hasn't worked out too badly for the ex Bournemouth man whop led Newcastle United to their first trophy in 70 years last season. The Magpies lifted the Carabao Cup and with Celtic lifting Scotland's equivalent as part of a domestic double, the pair clash in Glasgow. And there will even be silverware for the winners who will get their hands on the inaugural adidas Trophy, a new one-off contest between two of the brand's flagship clubs. 11:01Gavin Berry Get Shin there Celtic kicked off today with the announcement of another signing as Shin Yamada was confirmed. And he is happy to be the latest Japanese star to be snapped up by the Hoops but insists he arrives at Parkhead as his own man. The 25-year-old has completed his £1.2million switch from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale and has penned a four-year contract in Glasgow's East End. Yamada will team up with compatriots Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and fellow summer signing Hayato Inamura. And while he is also aware of the exploits of former Parkhead hero Kyogo Furuhashi, the 25-year-old is determined to create his own history in the green-and-white. Speaking to the club's webiste, he said: 'It is a huge honour for me to be here as a Celtic player and I can't wait to begin my time at this amazing club. 'Celtic is one of the top names in world football. I have already watched my countrymen like Daizen, Reo and Kyogo do so well at Celtic and I will aim to have the same impact. 'I am my own player, though, and I am ready to face all my own challenges directly. 'I want to do so well at Celtic, I know that Celtic Park is one of the best places in the world to play football with the best supporters around and I will do everything I can to make my new fans proud of me. 'I promise I will give everything I have to bring our fans success.' 10:54Gavin Berry Flashback Where does the time go? It's 30 years since Newcastle United played Celtic in a friendly to officially open the £17million North Stand at Parkhead. The Hoops were starting to get going under the late Tommy Burns and the teams drew 1-1 with John Collins and Les Ferdinand the scorers. David Ginola starred for Kevin Keegan's men after the Frenchman had rejected the chance to join Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain. 10:46Gavin Berry Geordies are talk of the Toon Ticket sales for this one were initially sluggish among the home fans but they have really picked up in the build up to the game and it could be a sell-out. The away fans had no such trouble in terms of appeal with the Geordies snapping up around 10,000 tickets. That should help make an incredible atmosphere with many of the Toon Army making a weekend of it in Glasgow. It wasn't so long ago they were on the other side of the city for a midweek friendly against Rangers when they brought a similarly sizeable support north of the border. 10:42Gavin Berry Howe-away the lads There's a parallel reality where Eddie Howe landed the Celtic job back in 2021 but it's fair to say it's worked out well for both parties since. The Hoops, after all, have continued to dominate under Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, while Howe has led the Magpies back to the European stage and delivered their first major trophy in 70 years. Howe had doubts over the make-up his coaching staff which sparked him to exit protracted talks to become Neil Lennon 's permanent successor in June 2021. The Englishman saying no opened the door to Postecoglou who rebuilt the Parkhead side. However, Howe's main sticking point didn't faze Postecoglou who left Yokohama Marinos and didn't bring his own staff with him. The Australian's success came alongside John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan despite the duo suffering flak for their role in Celtic's botched attempt to secure 10 In A Row. In a previous interview, Howe admitted the chance to rebuild the Hoops appealed but he declined to join the club after being unable to add trusted lieutenants Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone. Celtic was the one job I'd been offered that really appealed. The issue there was my staff. I felt that if I was to come into a pressured job like that, I needed to go in with a sense of stability. I could have recruited new staff, but then you're working each other out and there's a transition process where it probably takes three, four, five months. That's five months too late. I needed my staff with me and we couldn't get them together.

And the future of Hoops star Victor Ozhianvuna is close to being agreed as manager Stephen Bradley says the club are 'down the line' in terms of an agreement with a foreign club – believed to be Arsenal – in a deal which would shatter the League of Ireland record fee of €1.9m set by Mason Melia's sale to Tottenham.

Teenage sensation Victor Ozhianvuna scores super goal on full debut as Shamrock Rovers rout Wexford in FAI Cup
TEEN STAR Victor Ozhianvuna capped his full Shamrock Rovers debut with a sublime first goal for the club before the senior subs came on to kill off First Division Wexford in Tallaght. The 16-year-old scored early on but Stephen Bradley's Hoops side were made to work hard for their passage into the FAI Cup third round. It was only in the final 15 minutes that the visitors were put to the sword by goals from substitutes Graham Burke, Rory Gaffney and Danny Mandroiu. Eight points clear at the top of the Premier Division with just one defeat in 14 games, Rovers made seven changes from their most recent competitive outing against Sligo Rovers, including starting debuts for Ozhianvuna and recent signing John McGovern. Early doors, Ozhianvuna came in off the left wing to position himself perfectly to meet Darragh Nugent's on-the-money cross and score with a crisp, first-time side-foot volley. Read More on Shamrock Rovers Semi-finalists last year, striker McGovern heading wide from Ozhianvuna's cross, while Michael Noonan and Byrne worked Paul Martin between the posts before half-time. The Wexford threat from Oluwabiyi remained in the second half and he curled just wide on 54 minutes. Frustrated with labouring to put the game to bed, Bradley made five substitutions on 63 minutes with Dylan Watts, The latter brought a brave save from Martin with the keeper colliding with a post. Ed McGinty then denied Mike Rowe at the other end. Most read in Football Rovers finally got a second on 75 minutes as Mandroiu linked with Nugent to cross for Burke to show his composure from close range. Gaffney hooked in a third from almost on the goal line after Grace had nodded down Watts' corner and he then set up Mandroiu to sweep home the fourth in the 90th minute. Kieran Tierney tackles Brendan Rodgers Celtic contract countdown as he spots clear sign boss' 'drive' is still there
The Parkhead star jumped at the chance to be reunited with his former gaffer and he has high hopes for the coming season Kieran Tierney insists Brendan Rodgers is as driven as ever and won't be distracted by contract countdown talk. The Celtic boss has entered the final year of his current Hoops deal and is remaining tight-lipped about his long-term plans. Tierney admitted he's thrilled to be hooking up with his old gaffer again – and he's seen no signs Rodgers is winding down to an exit. The Irishman was roaring on the touchline in Wednesday night's friendly win against Sporting Lisbon and charged up for Saturday's bounce game with Newcastle United at Celtic Park. Tierney is adamant there are no fears about the manager's motivation heading towards the new season. He said: "I don't think he'll bother too much about the kind of outside noise. 'He'll just get on with his job because he knows he's got a job to do, and as his players, we've got a job to do. "We need to do it to the best of our ability, and that takes hard work and commitment every single day, no days off and just being at it every day. 'I think with the captain that we've got, it's perfect having Callum and the manager as well together. It's a perfect combination. 'It's amazing how much the manager actually works, and what the effort he puts in. 'We saw the benefits of it the other night. 'I think we played really well the other night, some good passages of play against a top team. 'It just shows you how passionate he is that you can still see him shouting and wanting more. And I think you need that if you are going to win these trophies and that, you need to be 100 per cent all the time. 'Pre-season friendly, whether it's Champions League qualifier, Scottish Cup, League, you need to be on it every single day, even in training. You need to be on it and the manager makes sure that we are. 'He's got that, it's his drive.' Rodgers played a big role in bringing Tierney back to Celtic with fans fevered about the prospect of a second coming after the pair were snapped together at a dinner last year. The full back said: "I knew these pictures would come out! It's massive. I've always kept in contact with him. He always texts me in the good times and the bad times throughout my career, he gave me a phone call. 'I'm buzzing to be back with the gaffer. I loved my time under him before. We were successful together. He got the best out of me and it's a joy to work with and I'm delighted to be back with him.' Tierney is determined to put his injury problems behind him but he insists he has nothing to prove regarding his fitness. He said: 'No, nothing, I know how much I work professionally myself, on my body, on my recovery, being as ready as I can be for games. 'I'm not here to prove anything, I'm just here to do the best for Celtic and see where it goes. 'I know how much I focus on my body, my recovery, and doing everything I can to be in the best possible shape that I can be, so that's all I can think about. 'I can't sit and worry about what ifs or anything. I think what can I do just to be in the best condition that I can be in.' Meanwhile striker Shin Yamada is expected to rubber stamp a four-year deal over the weekend while Rodgers is still on the hunt for new faces. Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha remains high on the wishlist with the Belgians ready to lower their £5m demands while Celts are cool on talk in Romania over a move for Cluj hitman Louis Munteanu, with the 25-year-old being tracked by teams in France. Celts are set to step up their pre-season plans against Newcastle today and Tierney added: "I think always when there's a Scottish-English team playing each other, the atmosphere is going to be good, there's always going to be a bit of rivalry there. 'It's a confidence builder as well. But also it is important for the fitness side of things to get boys sharp and get boys ready, give everyone minutes and give people a chance to impress.'

Kieran Tierney admits Celtic return was ‘now or never' as boyhood fan reveals he's ready to take on new role at Hoops
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SOME people thought Kieran Tierney's return to Parkhead was inevitable. But the boyhood Hoops fan insists if he hadn't returned this summer, he might never have rejoined the club. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 Kieran Tierney is ready to get back down to business at Parkhead Credit: Kenny Ramsay 4 Tierney in pre-season training with team-mates Credit: Kenny Ramsay While some players are happy to return to a former team when their legs are slowing down, Tierney was only ever coming back to Parkhead if he knew he could help them sprint towards more silverware. The all-action defender became a poster Bhoy for the club in his first spell, bagging three consecutive Trebles after coming through the youth ranks. When he flew the nest to join Arsenal in 2019, many predicted he'd be back donning the Hoops one day - himself included. But the 28-year-old revealed if he didn't come back now, it could easily have been never. When asked if it was important to return while still at his peak, Tierney said: "I think so. "That was another factor why I thought it was now or never time. 'If I didn't come back now and ended up signing somewhere else, I wouldn't want to come back at 33 and maybe I'm slowing down. 'I feel good just now. I'm in a good place and I'm obviously still young, so it's good. "I think honestly since I left, every summer or every time I started not to play, it was always the rumour that I would be back. "But it was something that was obviously hard to do at the time. Edouard to return and Schmeichel's last year at Celtic Plus Munteanu LATEST "But this time it was right and it was easy to do as a free agent. It was perfect. "There's still a lot to achieve and a lot to give. "I'll give it everything every day, as I always have wherever I've been. "But it's just that extra bit special coming back here." Tierney's spell at the Emirates Stadium was disrupted multiple times through injury. The full-back also suffered two hamstring tears during an otherwise successful loan spell in La Liga with Real Sociedad. Tierney doesn't regret his time with either club but is understandably hoping for a clean bill of health in his first season back in Glasgow. Tierney said: "I loved every minute of being away. "It was hard and had its challenges, just like everything does. 'But no, I don't think badly about it because I never played the last season or two. "Arsenal's a good club, and Sociedad's a great club as well. "And I met a lot of good people along the way and through the journey. 4 "I'm grateful for them because they helped me through some tough times as well. "You don't want to be injured, but that's just the way it is. "I can't sit and worry about what ifs or anything. I just do what I can to be in the best condition I can be in. "Right now I feel good. I had the games in the summer with Scotland and then after that I had a good rest. "But I did a lot of work as well just to make sure I was fit and ready. 'And now it's just a build-up phase for me, because I've not played consistently last year. "I was making some appearances, but consistent 90 minutes I've not had. 'It takes a good pre-season and a few friendlies to build it up. "Now I'm feeling good and I'm absolutely buzzing to get into more games." Having left Parkhead when he was 22, Tierney has returned a more mature and experienced player. Lifting the FA Cup with Arsenal and experiencing Champions League nights with the Gooners and Real Sociedad has taken his game to another level. 4 Now he's relishing the chance to take on a leadership role in the dressing room, having seen the influence of former captains like Scott Brown in action. Tierney said: "I would say I am more of a leader now and I think that just comes with age and experience. 'When I was here before, it was guys like Broony, Mikael Lustig, Charlie Mulgrew. "And now I probably fall into that category because it is quite a young squad. 'I'm always there if anybody needs any help, whether on the park or off the park. "I feel like I'm more mature and I've learned a lot. "I just try and take bits from everyone. Broony obviously was my captain here for years and now Callum McGregor. "They are two perfect examples of what a leader is." Tierney admits he'll be emotional when he steps out onto the Parkhead turf this afternoon for the first time in six years to face Newcastle United. Having already forged a promising looking partnership with Daizen Maeda down the left wing in pre-season clashes in Portugal, Tierney is excited to work with the relentless Japanese winger. Inside the Estádio Nacional as Robert Grieve takes you on a tour of the famous venue which hosted Celtic's 1967 European Cup win over Inter Milan When asked who has caught his eye the most since returning to Lennoxtown, Tierney said: "I think the one is Maeda. "You think, 'how can he run like that all the time?' "Me and Jamesy Forrest were sitting on the bench having a recovery shake after the Sporting Lisbon game, talking about how hot it was. "And he was there doing press-ups! He's a machine, a total machine. "But he's actually like that in training as well. Being away for six years, I've still not seen anyone that can sprint like that - consistently sprint and press. 'And as a full-back, the amount of times he helps you defensively as well. "It's only been a couple of games, but it's a joy to play with. "Not that he's surprised me, because I watched him for six years, but the fact that he's so consistent in his sprints is incredible. "You want to build a connection with any winger you play with and I'm sure we'll get there." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
