‘Weapons' Just Set Rotten Tomatoes Audience And Critic Score Records
Weapons, the new Zach Cregger horror film out this weekend, has arrived with high critic and audience scores. So high, in fact, it has set or tied a pair of records on that front. As it stands, Weapons is the highest critic scored, theatrically released horror movie this decade, since 2020. At a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, it's tied with When Evil Lurks and Oddity with that same score, albeit those were far more limited releases and have fewer critic reviews in, making that 96% more impressive. His House and Host, both films that are ranked above it with a 100% and a 99% respectively, were not theatrically released. His House is a Netflix horror movie, while Host was filmed entirely in COVID lockdown and released on horror platform Shudder. Then, we can move to audience score, where as it stands, Weapons appears to have the top spot with a 90%. While you may think critics are more prone to be harsh on horror movies than audiences, the opposite is true. Many of the top-rated horror movies have lower or much lower audience scores. There are only a handful close to Weapons, and many are well below it, despite being top rated by critics. Here's a sampling: You get the idea, and I can't list every horror movie since 2020, but at the very least, without question Weapons has the highest combined critic and audience score out of all of these, with barely any critic and audience disconnect, which is exceedingly rare, as you can see. An exception here is Sinners with higher scores on both fronts, but it's such a genre-defying movie, I'm not sure you can consider it in the same category as these others on the list. It also may be heading for a Best Picture nomination. Weapons is a must-see, it seems. I'm heading to the theater as soon as humanly possible, but the film is being praised as an excellent mix of harrowing horror and surprising comedy, which is something that did not exactly come across in its trailers. It's also getting a better reception than Barbarian, Cregger's last film which in some circles is considered a new horror classic, but now Weapons is sure to make a list like that without question. Now we figure out how Weapons will perform at the box office against the likes of the quickly-dropping Fantastic Four, and if these scores will help it take the weekend. I think they might. Young guns add to South Sydney contract speculation
Young gun Jye Gray hasn't denied he may leave South Sydney for a rival league when his contract expires at the end of next year. Gray was reportedly given a $US600,000 ($A922,000) contract to join rugby union's global start-up R360 competition, which is set to begin in 2027 and serve as a rival to the NRL. If the 28-cap Rabbitohs fullback was to join, he might play alongside stars including Ryan Papenhuyzen, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Zac Lomax who are all in negotiations to join the breakaway league. "My manager is looking after everything outside of that, but I'm just excited to play Gold Coast this weekend," Gray told reporters on Thursday. "I played rugby only a little bit in school, but that's about it." Gray also spoke about Lewis Dodd's signing saga after reports coach Wayne Bennett had reportedly told the Englishman he's free to look elsewhere for next season aired on Tuesday. The $2 million signing insists his future remained at Souths, telling reporters Bennett had been playing "games." But, Gray told reporters Dodd deserves to stay in Australia regardless of his future with Souths. "I think he's a great footballer, and he's an even better bloke off the field," Gray said. "He will have a future in rugby league. And, whatever he has to do is up to him. "He will get a crack somewhere." Jacob Host has his own contract issues to deal with at Redfern. The second-rower's contract expires at the end of 2025 and has confirmed he's talking to other clubs. However, he was more focused on South Sydney's match against the Titans which has been coined the "Spoon Bowl". A win would lift the Rabbitohs off the foot of the ladder and jump their opponents. Host said ahead of Sunday, Bennett had banned the words wooden spoon in the locker room. "It's a word we are not allowed to say," Host said. "He just avoids it at all costs. We've had a lot of injuries this year. "We're just trying to go out there, keep the gloves up and keep fighting every week." Latrell Mitchell, meantime, got through two thirds of Thursday's training session after he was named on the extended bench. Cameron Murray and Campbell Graham were also seen running, with Host confirming they are "only a few weeks away". Airbnb Wins Claim Against Vrbo for Nick Saban Commercials
Vrbo needs to modify or take down its Nick Saban commercials after Airbnb won a challenge against the campaign with the BBB's National Advertising Division. That division found that the campaign falsely "conveys the message that Vrbo competitors, like Airbnb, always require cohabitation with hosts," according to a National Advertising Division announcement. It said the claim is unsupported and called on Vrbo to remove the "host-free" claim in the commercials or change it. The Vrbo commercials – called "Rules" and "Host" – stated: "When other vacation rentals make you share your turf with a host, try one you have all to yourself." The commercials feature the former University of Alabama football coach talking about all the things guests supposedly can't do in a rental when a host is present: Taking showers longer than five minutes, for example, or using streaming services. They attempted to take a shot at Airbnb Rooms, which are shared stays with hosts. The BBB's National Advertising Division felt the ad went too far in implying that all Airbnb stays have a host present, which they don't. "We're pleased with the NAD decision," an Airbnb spokesperson said Tuesday. Both the "Rules" and "Host" commercials debuted on August 31, 2024, and are still airing today, according to a spokesperson for "Rules" ran most frequently during college football games, followed by men's college basketball and NFL games. In November, Expedia Group CEO Ariane Gorin told investors and analysts that the campaign was effective. "We have this great marketing campaign with Nick Saban in the last couple of months," Gorin said. "Perhaps people saw it. It was a great-performing campaign and drove a lot of conversion." Vrbo said in a statement to the advertising division that it "will comply with NAD's recommendation" and that it "thanks the National Advertising Division for its prompt review of the matter." As of Tuesday afternoon, both of the Vrbo commercials with the disputed language were available in Vrbo's YouTube channel. A National Advertising Division spokesperson said "we expect reasonably prompt compliance." Vrbo also has put up billboards, including one near Airbnb headquarters in San Francisco. In one case, it has the line, "What do you call an Airbnb without a host? — Vrbo." The National Advertising Division recommended that Vrbo discontinue the billboard campaign or modify the language. A second billboard says that Vrbo is "Airbnb's hotter, cooler, friendlier, long-lost twin that never has hosts." The National Advertising Division did not rule in favor of Airbnb for that one. It said that it "accurately conveys that Vrbo only offers rental options that are not shared by a guest with a host."
