Eric Adams reserves more NYC affordable housing for veterans, city workers in surprise announcement
Mayor Eric Adams was set to announce Thursday a plan that would give preference to city government workers and military veterans for an increased number of Big Apple affordable housing units. The number of new or existing units with a preference for municipal workers and vets will double from 5% to 10% as part of the city's Housing Connect Lottery program — and it'll be the first time that military vets will get preference in the program. 'As a lifelong public servant, I know first-hand the sacrifices that our city employees make every day to keep our streets safe, teach our children, help families save money, and deliver every day for 8.5 million of their fellow New Yorkers,' Adams said. Rice The mayor was set to make the announcement at a virtual town hall meeting he was scheduled to host for city workers, some who are required to live in the five boroughs. 'We want to make sure the public servants who power our city can afford to live in our city, which is why we are going to double the city's affordable housing preference for our extraordinary city employees. Advertisement 'But we're not stopping there,' the mayor said. 'Too many military veterans still struggle with housing insecurity. If you served our country abroad or on a military base, you should be able to find an affordable place to live back home; that is why we are going to make military veterans eligible for these homes as well.' Under the program, residents can apply for lower than market rent housing in homes financed by the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Housing Development Corporation. 'We support Mayor Adams' initiative.' Adams is pushing his housing agenda — such as the 'City of Yes' zoning change expected to build 80,000 new homes over 15 years — as New Yorkers face record-high rents and a housing supply crunch. On Monday, Adams proposed construction of 3,000 new homes at a marshy, abandoned Flushing Airport site in College Point, Queens. Hizzoner is also running for re-election on an independent ballot line this fall, in what polls indicate is a long-shot bid against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. Other candidates include Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and lawyer Jim Walden.

Sarawakian students welcome RM200 monthly SRAS assistance
(Back, from fourth left) Al-Khalid and Fazzrudin, along with other distinguished guests, pose for a photo-call after the conclusion of the programme. KUCHING (June 18): The Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS), which provides RM200 per month to eligible students, has been well received by Sarawakian students enrolled in higher learning institutions across the state. According to Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, many students have applied for the scheme, which is implemented by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), following its introduction during outreach programmes at local public and private universities. 'We are pleased to learn from HDC that after our first outreach session, they received a significant number of applications, many of which already been approved,' he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Education Initiative Programme held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Hall (DeTar Putra), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), yesterday. The programme is part of a wider state-led effort to raise awareness about various government assistance schemes and improve public access to them. 'For this series, we are focusing on education-related initiatives,' said Fazzrudin, adding that more sessions will be held at other campuses across Sarawak, following previous engagements at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). 'This scheme isn't new, but many students may have been unaware of it previously. Our role now is to bridge that gap and ensure these benefits reach them directly.' When asked whether the scheme would be extended to Sarawakian students studying outside the state, Fazzrudin said such suggestion would be compiled as feedback for the relevant agencies and the Premier. Meanwhile, Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs) Prof Dr Al-Khalid Othman expressed appreciation for the SRAS initiative, noting that more than half of the university's students are Sarawakians, with around 6,000 coming from B40 (low-income) households. 'Students generally pay between RM450 and RM500 per semester for accommodation, depending on room type. This assistance goes a long way in reducing their financial burden,' he said. He also welcomed a separate contribution of RM40,000 from the state government to support the campus food bank programme, aimed at helping students from low-income households.

Dr Annuar (centre) joins longhouse chief Tuai Rumah Kawau (fourth right) and community leader Penghulu Eddy (third left) for a Gawai cake-cutting ceremony. SIBU (June 12): Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee visited seven longhouses during the recent Gawai Dayak celebrations, reaffirming his commitment to basic infrastructure and utilities in the area – starting with the newly established Rumah Donny Nyanggai and Rumah Kawau Anggang. At Rumah Donny, a 12-door longhouse developed under the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Dr Annuar announced several key initiatives. These include the construction of a paved access road, a public toilet facility, and the upgrading of the 'ruai' ceiling and flooring. A total of RM150,000 has already been allocated for the project. Dr Annuar, who also serves as the deputy minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, shared that gazettement of Rumah Donny is being considered to facilitate future development approvals. He emphasised that essential utilities – namely electricity, clean water supply, and telecommunications – are being prioritised. 'For electricity, internal wiring must be completed by certified contractors before Sarawak Energy Berhad can proceed with supply connection after Gawai or in the near future,' he explained. At Rumah Kawau Anggang, a 25-door longhouse, Dr Annuar gave assurance that clean water and electricity issues would be resolved promptly, with road access to the area also prioritised. To tackle internet challenges in rural areas, he proposed the use of Starlink satellite technology as a more efficient solution than building telecommunications towers, especially in sparsely populated areas. For 2026, Dr Annuar has approved RM300,000 for the installation of ceilings, lighting, and fans in the ruai areas across all 34 longhouses in his constituency as part of a broad upgrade initiative. During his stop at the Kemas kindergarten at Rumah Jawin Janting, Dr Annuat expressed commitment to work with local village chiefs Tuai Rumah Jawin, Tuai Rumah Jangan Pung, and Tuai Rumah Ba'ie Bundan to identify a suitable location for a children's playground. 'Although it may take some time, I will see to it that the playground becomes a reality,' he assured. Before lunch, he visited Rumah Ba'ie Bundan, where he approved the construction of 16 ruai door sections. In the afternoon, visits continued to Rumah Jangan Pung, Rumah Melissa Ilong and Rumah Jok Ingon. Three additional longhouses – Rumah Miskin Lanting, Rumah Manjah Ediaze and Rumah Nicholas Bennet Ben – were also scheduled for visits on Friday, but had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. dr annuar rapaee Gawai longhouse rural development Sibu
