Texas offers 2027 WR committed to Houston

Texas offers 2027 WR committed to Houston The Texas Longhorns hosted a plethora of top recruits around the country for their Elite Camp over the weekend. One of them was three-star Aden Starling who attends Shadow Creek High School in Pearland, Texas. Since last October, Starling has been committed to the Houston Cougars. However, in today's landscape of college football, the recruiting game never ends until a recruit signs. Having said that, Texas extended an offer to Starling before he left Austin. Starling is the No. 440 overall recruit in the country and the No. 58 wide receiver per 247Sports composite rankings. They also have the 6-foot, 175-pounder as the No. 54 player out of Texas. The word on Starling is that he's a polished route runner who has great get-off on the line of scrimmage. That was certainly the case during the Elite 11 Austin Regional in March where Starling was named one of the top performers. It would behoove the Longhorns to get Starling back on campus soon if they want to flip his commitment. Milos Uzan withdraws from NBA Draft to return to Houston: Source

Milos Uzan has decided to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return for his senior season at Houston, a source briefed on the move confirmed. This decision gives Houston three returning starters — Uzan joins Emanuel Sharp and Joseph Tugler — and cements last year's national runner-up as one of the preseason national title favorites. Advertisement In a roster domino of Uzan's decision, former Texas Tech and Creighton guard Pop Isaacs decommitted from Houston and will head to Texas A&M, his agency told The Athletic. The Houston coaching staff operated this spring under the premise that Uzan would likely stay in the draft and moved quickly to replace him in the starting lineup with Isaacs. The door was always left open in case Uzan's feedback from the NBA led him back to Houston. After participating in the NBA Draft Combine and working out for six teams, he was trending toward the second round — he appeared at No. 40 in The Athletic's Sam Vecenie's latest mock draft. By returning to college, it's possible that Uzan could get more money than he would have received with a contract in the second round. He also has the chance to play his way into the 2026 first round. With L.J. Cryer, Houston's leading scorer from last season, graduating, Uzan will likely take on more of a scoring role after averaging 11.4 points in his first season at Houston. For coach Kelvin Sampson, his formula has been roster continuity, and this certainly helps in that department. The Cougars will be leaning more on freshmen than ever before, with two starting spots likely going to power forward Chris Cenac Jr. and either Isiah Harwell or Kingston Fleming at the other guard spot, but it's a lot easier to blend those freshmen around three veterans. The combination of Uzan, Sharpe and Tugler outscored opponents by 40.8 points per 100 possessions when on the floor together last season, per CBB Analytics. — The Athletic's Tobias Bass contributed to this report.

Houston gives Kelvin Sampson new 4-year contract

May 21 - Houston has given coach Kelvin Sampson a new four-year contract following his team's run to the championship game of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The contract will run through the 2028-29 season, the university announced Wednesday. Financial terms were not announced by Houston, however CBS Sports reported that the deal will keep Sampson "among the highest paid coaches in college basketball." However, according to the USA Today coaches salary database for the 2024-25 season, Sampson has a long way to go to reach the top. Bill Self of Kansas, at $8.8 million a year annually, is No. 1 on the USA Today list while Sampson is No. 16 at $4.6 million. That figure puts him fourth in the Big 12 behind Self, Scott Drew of Baylor ($5.4 million) and Arizona's Tommy Lloyd ($5.3 million). "It is hard to truly put into words what Kelvin Sampson has meant to our men's basketball program, our athletics department, our University and our greater Houston community," Cougars vice president for athletics Eddie Nunez said in the school news release. "His success as a coach on the court is even more impressive when considering the tremendous impact he has had on the many young men to come through our program." Sampson led the Cougars to a 35-5 record in the 2024-25 season, which included a heartbreaking 65-63 loss to Florida in the final of the NCAA Tournament last month. The 69-year-old Sampson has a 724-311 career record in Division I. Before being hired at Houston in 2014, he coached at Washington State (1987-94), Oklahoma (1994-2006) and Indiana (2006-08). With the Cougars, his record is 299-84. He has been named Coach of the Year twice -- 1995 and 2024. --Field Level Media

Hurricanes Steal Former Duke Signee

The Jai Lucas era in Miami is off to a scorching start, and Monday the Hurricanes secured a commitment from what Lucas hopes to be the first of many top-20 players in his regime. Shelton Henderson of Bellaire High School in Houston, TX, is a Cane after pledging to Miami and recommitting to Lucas for a second time. Advertisement Rated the 17th overall player in the country and fifth-best small forward in the class by On3, Henderson was originally recruited by Lucas at Duke before signing with the Blue Devils last November. He decommitted last Thursday before deciding to follow Lucas to Miami. Jai Lucas completed the flip for Texas' top-ranked hooper despite multiple offers from big name programs that include the hometown and national runner-up Houston Cougars, the aforementioned Duke Blue Devils, Alabama Crimson Tide, Kansas Jayhawks, Louisville Cardinals, and a slew of other SEC programs. It is no secret that Lucas wants his team to be defensive-minded and has constructed a roster to fit that identity. And at 6-foot-6 inches and 210 pounds, Henderson displays the versatility to "guard all three perimeter positions," says On3 Senior National Recruiting Analyst, Jamie Shaw. Advertisement With Henderson being named one of the top-10 defenders in the 2025 class, the marriage between him and Lucas seemed to be a natural fit. Offensively, Henderson's "explosive burst," allowed him to blow by defenders with his first step and average 19.4 points per game as a senior. While the strength of his game lies in his ability to penetrate defenses, his college-ready frame allows him to finish at the rim with relative ease. He is also comfortable with the ball in his hands in the open court and can be trusted to initiate offense. Last May 2024, Henderson was named to the 2024 Men's U18 National Team and proceeded to win gold at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup averaging 8.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 18.1 minutes while logging 10+ points on three occasions. Advertisement Henderson's relationship with Lucas was a huge reason in his decision to sign with Miami, as Lucas attended the same high school and was named a McDonald's All-American in 2007. 'Shelton is someone I have known for a long time, and I am very familiar with him and his family,' Lucas said. 'He has an exceptional work ethic and fearlessness on the court, but what I am most excited about is the impact he will have in our locker room and on the program as a whole.' Henderson becomes Miami's third recruiting commit, top-ranked pledge overall, and joins a talented class that includes four transfers. He owns a four-star rating with On3 and a five-star rating with 247Sports and Rivals. Related: Miami Coach Jai Lucas Lands Big Ten Breakout Guard in Transfer Portal

Former Duke Star Makes Appearance at MLB Game on Monday

The Duke Blue Devils were picked by many people just several weeks ago to win the 2025 men's national championship. But they instead fell in stunning fashion in the Final Four round to the Houston Cougars when they blew a late lead. Their roster will look different next season. Freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, big man Khaman Maluach and wing Kon Knueppel have all declared themselves eligible for the upcoming NBA draft. Advertisement While much of the attention is focused on Flagg, who is expected to become a big-time star at the next level, Knueppel is an intriguing prospect in his own right. He made an appearance at American Family Field in his native Milwaukee and threw out the first pitch as the Milwaukee Brewers hosted the Houston Astros. Knueppel, who is 6-foot-7, can play multiple positions and is a very accurate shooter. This past season, the freshman averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while shooting 47.9% from the field and 40.6% from 3-point range. Duke Blue Devils guard Kon Knueppel (7) drives against Louisville Cardinals forward Noah Dedmon-Imagn Images He earned nods to the ACC All-Freshman team and All-ACC second team and was named the MVP of the ACC Tournament. In 2024, he also won the Wisconsin Mr. Basketball award as the best male high school basketball player in the state. Advertisement Knueppel is expected to go fairly high in June's draft. An scouting report listed Chris Mullin, a Hall of Fame sharpshooter who averaged 18.2 points a game and made five NBA All-Star teams, and former 3-point specialist Jared Dudley as the closest player comparisons for Knueppel.
