Nebraska Legend Immortalized by Cotton Bowl
Nebraska Legend Immortalized by Cotton Bowl originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the most revered running backs in Nebraska football history took his place among some of college football greats. Advertisement Cornhuskers legend Tony Davis was one of eight inducted into the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame during enshrinement ceremonies at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. A tough, hard-nosed running back from Tecumseh, Neb., Davis closed his career as Nebraska's all-time leading rusher with 2,445 career rushing yards during his three seasons from 1973-75. (Davis has since dropped out of the top 20, with Mike Rozier the current record holder with 4,780 career yards.) Davis' first season coincided with the arrival of coaching icon Tom Osborne, and he starred with a career-high 1,114 rushing yards. Davis capped the 9-2-1 campaign with a legendary performance in Nebraska's 19-3 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Advertisement Davis pounded the Longhorns all day long, rushing for 106 yards on 28 carries and scored on a three-yard run. Davis and his Husker teammates seized momentum in the third quarter and broke open a 3-3 stalemate with back-to-back touchdowns. Nebraska finished No. 7 in the final AP rankings. Davis continued to take a leading role for the Huskers in 1974 and 1975, helping the Huskers to appearances in the Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl in his final two seasons. He was the MVP of Nebraska's 1974 Sugar Bowl win over Florida and was inducted into the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame in 2021, giving him the rare distinction of being in the Halls of Fame for two of the nation's oldest and most prestigious bowl games. He is also the only Husker in both the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl Halls of Fame. Davis was joined in the 14th Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame class by Notre Dame fullback Jerome Bettis, Texas linebacker Randy Braband, Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association Chief Ambassador, Past Chair and former Team Selection & Playoff Committee Chair Finley (Fin) Ewing III, CBAA Historian Charlie Fiss, Auburn running back Bo Jackson and Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans. The eight honorees add their names to a group that has grown to 93 men and women who have left an indelible mark on the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, one of America's original bowl games. Advertisement Davis went on to play six seasons in the National Football League after being drafted in the fourth round, appearing in 89 career games with the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nebraska volleyball releases 2025 schedule
Nebraska volleyball releases 2025 schedule Nebraska released the volleyball schedule for the 2025 season earlier this week. The Huskers finished the 2024 season with a 33-3 record. They also won the Big Ten title with a 19-1 conference mark. They entered the NCAA Tournament as the third overall seed, making it all the way to the semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Penn State. One of the key storylines for this season will be new coach Dani Busboom Kelly. She took over in January 2025, following the retirement of legendary coach John Cook. Now, Nebraska volleyball will begin a new era. The Huskers kick off the season on Friday, Aug. 22, when they host the Pitt Panthers at Pinnacle Bank Arena as part of the AVCA First Serve Showcase. They start Big Ten play against the Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday, Sep. 24, in Lincoln, Nebraska. They close the 2025 season on Nov. 29 at home against Ohio State. The program looks poised for another major run in 2025, but will have to try to replace All-Americans Lexi Rodriguez and Merritt Beason. Things will look a bit different on the sidelines without Cook, but the program should be in good hands with a new head coach, and most of last season's starters are returning. Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens breaks her own record for fastest softball pitch ever thrown
College softball's fastest flamethrower just got faster. Tennessee softball ace Karlyn Pickens had already thrown the fastest pitch ever recorded at 78.2 mph. But in the first inning of the super regional against Nebraska on May 24, she beat her own record. Advertisement Pickens threw 79.4 mph during Nebraska pitcher Jordy Bahl's first at-bat of Game 2. Pickens tied the previous record of 77 mph by Tennessee legend Monica Abbott earlier in the season twice before she broke it against Arkansas on March 24. Abbott originally set the record during a National Pro Fastpitch game in 2012. The Weaverville, North Carolina, native is known for her velocity as one of the few pitchers to consistently throw in the mid 70s and higher. Tennessee was tied 2-2 with Nebraska after the first inning. The No. 7 seed Lady Vols (43-15) lost Game 1 to the Huskers 5-2, and they would need to win Game 2 to extend their season and force a rubber match on May 25. Pickens had already thrown five strikeouts in the first two innings of Game 2. Advertisement Pickens won her second straight SEC Pitcher of the Year award this season after leading the conference in ERA and strikeouts. She currently has a 0.99 ERA and 259 strikeouts on the season. Cora Hall covers University of Tennessee women's athletics. Email her at and follow her on X @corahalll.
