Dozens of Arbaeen pilgrims killed, injured in southern Iraq accident
Also in Iraq Iraq's electricity back online after nationwide outage Iraq says nearly 8,000 prisoners released under general amnesty law Iraq, Kurdish forces capture nearly a dozen ISIS suspects in joint ops Grid collapse causes widespread power outage across Iraq A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 40 Arbaeen pilgrims were injured, and several others killed in a devastating traffic accident on Wednesday in Iraq's southern Basra province. The incident occurred during the ongoing million-man Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings. According to the Basra Health Department, the accident took place between the Rumaila and Sidra checkpoints - southwest and north of Basra, respectively. The department confirmed "40 injuries and several initial fatalities" among the pilgrims but did not disclose their nationalities. Emergency teams were placed on high alert to handle the influx of casualties. The pilgrims were making their way to the shrine city of Karbala in southern Iraq to mark Arbaeen, which commemorates the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein ibn Ali - the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad - who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. This year's pilgrimage is set to culminate on August 15. In a separate incident on Tuesday, a horrific head-on collision between an SUV and a single-decker bus claimed the lives of five people and injured more than 19 others on the road between the Afak district and Nafar sub-district in Diwaniyah province, southern Iraq. Among the fatalities were two sons of Iraqi lawmaker Karim Aliwi al-Muhammadawi, the head of the Iraqi Parliament's Security and Defense Committee. Amer al-Rakabi, a spokesperson for the Diwaniyah police, stated that the SUV carrying Muhammadawi's sons collided with the bus, resulting in 24 casualties. The affected persons included 'men, women, and children,' according to Ahmed Kateh, operations officer at the Afak district health department. Some of the injured were transferred to specialized hospitals for further treatment. Deadly road accidents during the Arbaeen pilgrimage have become a recurring tragedy in Iraq, often attributed to poor infrastructure, overcrowded routes, and reckless driving. In September 2023, a crash in the northern Salahaddin province killed at least 16 people, including 12 Iranian pilgrims. At the time, a medical official told AFP that the driver may have fallen asleep. A year earlier, 11 Iranian pilgrims and their Iraqi driver were killed in a minibus collision in Iraq's Babil province. The Iranian Red Crescent Society also reported at least nine Iranian deaths that same month due to various health issues, including heatstroke.

Iraq arrests 23 suspected ISIS members over plot to target Arbaeen pilgrims: Judiciary
Also in Iraq Chlorine leak sickens hundreds amid Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq Kurdish MP slams Baghdad for hypocrisy toward Erbil Two Kurds arrested in Kirkuk for flying US flags to stand trial Iraq reports nearly three million visitors for Arbaeen pilgrimage A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi intelligence forces on Sunday captured a 'terrorist' network comprising nearly two dozen suspected Islamic State (ISIS) affiliates who were allegedly plotting attacks against Shiite pilgrims participating in the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage - one of the world's largest religious gatherings - in southern Iraq. According to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA), the arrests were made under the supervision of a judge from the Karbala Investigation Court and carried out by the Falcons Intelligence Cell. The operation led to the arrest of '23 terrorism defendants' - spread across Iraq's mid-Euphrates southern provinces and the capital, Baghdad - including one woman. 'Their confessions have been formally approved by the judiciary.' The Karbala Investigation Court stated that the suspects confessed to planning multiple 'terrorist plots' to target 'the safety and security of Arbaeen visitors.' "The first plot involved the manufacturing and planting of explosive devices along the routes used by pilgrims,' while 'the second plot was to poison the food containers provided to the pilgrims,' in addition to setting fire to the makeshift service processions that offer accommodation, food, and beverages to Arbaeen visitors.' The mid-Euphrates region includes the provinces of Babil, Karbala, Najaf, al-Qadisiyyah, Muthanna, Dhi Qar, Maysan, Basra, and Wasit. Millions of pilgrims from these areas are currently journeying to the shrine city of Karbala to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, which marks the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein ibn Ali - the grandson of Prophet Muhammad - who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. This year's Arbaeen pilgrimage is set to culminate on August 15 in Karbala. The Karbala Investigations Court further stated on Sunday that ISIS had recruited the captured individuals through a process that 'began with brainwashing,' followed by 'integrating them into groups for distorted religious indoctrination,' and ultimately 'forcing them to pledge allegiance to the terrorist organization's leadership.' In a statement issued Sunday, Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council called on citizens to remain vigilant and urged families to "closely monitor the online activities of their relatives for any signs of suspicious behavior.' The Council also warned Arbaeen procession organizers to "prevent individuals of unknown identity from accessing areas where food and beverages are being prepared" to ensure the safety of pilgrims. In June 2014, ISIS seized vast areas of northern and western Iraq. Although Iraq declared ISIS territorially defeated in 2017, the group continues to pose a persistent security threat through sporadic attacks, bombings, and abductions - particularly in disputed areas between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), where a security vacuum persists. Since ISIS's defeat, attacks targeting Arbaeen pilgrims have significantly declined, chiefly due to proactive efforts from Iraqi security forces. In September 2019, authorities reported foiling a planned rocket attack on pilgrims. The following year, security forces thwarted three suicide bombings aimed at Arbaeen processions. In 2022, Iraqi security forces said they uncovered a plot to target pilgrims in four provinces, attributing the plan to remnants of the former Baath regime. Arbaeen is the largest annual event in Iraq, reportedly drawing as many as 21.5 million pilgrims in 2024, according to figures from Karbala's holy shrine directorates. To secure the massive gathering, Iraqi authorities roll out a nationwide security plan each year. In 2024, approximately 40,000 personnel from various state agencies were deployed. This year, similar security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

Dhamar: March, events commemorating martyrdom of Imam Hussein
Dhamar - Saba The city of Dhamar witnessed a mass march and events on Sunday to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali (may God be pleased with them) under the slogan "Humiliation is out of our reach." Dhamar Governor Mohammed al-Bukhaiti and a number of executive, local, and security leaders participated in the march. Slogans were raised expressing disavowal of the enemies of God and rejecting hegemony and arrogance, affirming their adherence to the path of Hussein in steadfastness on the truth and confronting tyrants. The participants affirmed the Yemeni people's support for the Palestinian people, considering what is happening in Gaza to be the "Karbala of our time" and exposing the complicity of the weak. They pointed out that commemorating this anniversary stems from the Yemeni people's faith identity and their loyalty to the Prophet and his pure family. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (Local)
