Super Momma: One tigress revives entire reserve
HYDERABAD: Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Telangana, once home to only three tigers, now has a thriving population of 36 tigers. At the center of this resurgence is a tigress, Farah, also known as F6. Since giving birth to two cubs in 2019, Farah has become the undisputed matriarch of the reserve. Her bloodline now accounts for nearly half of the tigers that inhabit the tiger reserve. Known affectionately as 'SuperMomma,' Farah's contribution to the population has been extraordinary. She has littered four times in total, with her most recent birth in 2025 bringing three more cubs into the family. She was named Farah since she was primarily spotted in Farahabad, which was once the Hyderabad Nizam's hunting ground. The local Chenchu tribals named her Bowramma, as they spotted her near the Bowramma temple. Bowramma's 2022 litter of four cubs survived and was carefully nurtured by her before transitioning into the safety of forested land under close supervision by the reserve staff and the Chenchu tribal group. Farah's inheritance, strengthened by her daughter's success, now represents over 50% of the tiger population in Amrabad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Undo As Nagarkurnool Forest Officer Rohit Goppidi IFS explains, 'Farah has become the cornerstone of the big cat population here, with her recurring sightings and the tigers of her lineage forming the bedrock of conservation efforts.' Genetic Health and the Role of Males Allaying the fears of inbreeding, Amrabad has managed to maintain its genetic diversity through the migration of male tigers from the neighbouring source population of NSTR and GBM in Andhra Pradesh. Tigers often cross the River Krishna that divides the two Telugu States. Male tigers like M19, who is the alpha dominant male of the Amrabad tiger reserve, regularly swim across the Krishna River to mate with females. According to foresters, M19's dominance is now being challenged by a newcomer, M66, whose arrival is shaking up the status quo. 'Male tigers roam across larger territories covering multiple ranges of the reserve, while females stay within defined home ranges,' says Rohit Goppidi. 'This movement of male tigers from Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve and Gundla Brahmeswaram wildlife sanctuary of AP to ATR of Telangana allows us to maintain a hereditary vigourof the population, with males coming in from other reserves to keep the gene pool diverse. ' Reigning Queen's Legacy: A Model of Success Farah's legacy as both a mother and matriarch goes beyond the number of cubs she has produced; it's about the remarkable survival rates of her offspring. Wildlife biologist D Mahendar Reddy credits the strong survival instincts and resilient genes of Farah's lineage for their success. Other prominent females like F7, known as Tara, have also played an important role in the reserve's growth. Although she isn't related to Farah, Tara's three litters—two of which were sizable, each with four cubs—have enriched the genetic diversity and vitality of the reserve. Conservation Through Collaboration Amrabad's success is a collaboration between forest officials and the Chenchu tribal community. Residents of the forest, these tribal members act as skilled trackers, to ensure the safety and well-being of the tigers. Their knowledge of the landscape and tiger behavior, adding to the use of modern technology. DFO Rohit Goppidi says 'Alongside human tracking , we use advanced tools like Pink Evolve, AI-driven software that monitors prey spatial density, and Tiger ID, developed by the Wildlife Institute of India, to identify and track individual tigers.' Amrabad's eco-tourism revenues have increased since the formation of Telangana which also resulted in the bifurcation of tiger reserve, benefiting the local community and providing jobs for 127 Chenchu guides and supporting the establishment of 17 local homestays.

HC questions cops on forced potency test
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court questioned whether cops can force anybody to undergo a potency test or any medical tests unless they are allowed by the law or with consent. The HC made the observations while granting relief to a techie who alleged coercion from the cops to undergo a potency test. The man's second wife accused him of allegedly cheating her by concealing his impotency during the marriage, following which Kukatpally police registered a case. Police registered a case against the petitioner in June 2025. His wife, 33, alleged that his first marriage also broke up after his first wife discovered his impotency. From the time she realised his impotency, his father was harassing her sexually, she alleged in her complaint to the police. "He and his father cheated me by inducing me into this marriage with him, harassing me physically, mentally, and emotionally," alleged the woman. She also claimed that she quit her job and shut her boutique business at her husband's demand. "The investigating officer was trying to serve notice to him under Section 35(3) of BNSS, and as he did not receive the notice, the notice was sent to him by registered post," submitted the govt pleader. Taking a serious view of the allegations made by the petitioner, the HC ordered the cops not to indulge in acts outside the law and to conduct the investigation in strict compliance with the law and recently dismissed the petition.

Month on, kin of Sigachi victims await full relief
Hyderabad: Nearly a month has passed since the deadly explosion at the Sigachi factory in Sangareddy district, which claimed 46 lives. Families of the victims are still awaiting the promised compensation, despite the company insisting that the disbursement process is underway. While authorities initially assured around Rs one crore in relief, most families claim there has been no update since. Many of those who died in the blast were young workers and the sole breadwinners for their families. These families are now struggling to survive on the Rs one lakh given to them immediately after the incident — money which mostly went towards funeral expenses and basic necessities. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad "We were told we would receive compensation soon, but almost a month has passed and no one has contacted us. Two days ago, I received a call where they just asked if my brother had a family. Apart from that, they didn't say anything else," said Kumar Lal Rawat, whose 26-year-old brother Chote Lal Kol died in the blast. The family hails from Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh and has been left to fend for themselves with no financial aid or clarity. In Odisha's Cuttack district, the family of 21-year-old Lagnajeet Juveri is surviving on rice and vegetables donated by neighbours. "We are already in debt. I keep calling them, but the company says they cannot help us until the insurance money arrives," said his cousin, Debashish Veura. The wait has been equally painful for 37-year-old Akhilesh Nishad's family in Uttar Pradesh. His brother, Bajarangi Lal, who now works on a farm to make ends meet, said: "He has three children. I quit my job in a factory in Kukatpally to support the family. We haven't received any compensation beyond the initial Rs one lakh, which has already been spent." In another case, the family of 32-year-old Laxmi Mukhiya, who leaves behind a wife, two daughters aged 8 and 3, and a five-year-old son, is struggling. "Even my parents are dependent on us. What next? That money is our only hope," said his brother, Laxman Mukhiya. Meanwhile, Sigachi Industries Limited has stated that compensation is being disbursed in a phased manner. "The full amount will be handed over once the verification process is complete. While we do not have a definitive timeline, the process is currently underway. So far, we have given Rs 10 lakh to each of the families of the deceased and to eight families of those reported missing. Additionally, the company has given Rs one lakh to 25 injured employees," the company said in an official statement.
