Meteorologist Carrigan Chauvin visits Hynes-Parkview Charter School
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Third graders at Hynes Charter School are leaning all about the weather in their science classes this month. What better way for kids to understand meteorology, than talking to an actual Meteorologist! On Tuesday afternoon, Meteorologist Carrigan Chauvin headed over for a classroom visit to discuss what she does on a day to day basis in this line of work. She also showed videos and pictures of the different types of weather that she has encountered throughout her years in the industry as a broadcast meteorologist.
She went over light hearted topics, such as cloud types, but also dove into a more serious conversation about severe weather. Students talked about the popular movie 'Twister' and the recent snow storm in Louisiana. Carrigan also talked about her close connection to southeast Louisiana and why it is so special for her to be working here now.
Carrigan was impressed by how smart this group was! She was asked some really good questions. Some questions made her really think hard… others got her emotional… and some reconnected her to the reasons why she chose this career in the first place. Kids are good at this. Making you think outside of your day to day box. Somehow – perspectives just become simpler, and more hopeful.
A few questions that Meteorologist Carrigan Chauvin remembers from the class are:
'How do YOU stay safe in a storm when you are out live in the elements?'
'Why do tornadoes happen?'
And her personal favorite question…Even though Carrigan knows that every student in that class isn't going to become a meteorologist like her one day. She hopes that from their conversation… they take away the courage to follow their dreams, whatever that may be, and not be afraid of failure.
