Last year 110 children and youth were diagnosed with cancer, with 500 others in active care. As part of the event, Steve Read, president and CEO, CHEO Foundation accepted a $250,000 donation to support paediatric cancer care. Hyundai Canada dealers and representatives, together with CHEO oncology patient ambassadors and CHEO Foundation team at today's handprint ceremony and $250,000 cheque presentation. "We are incredibly grateful to Hyundai Hope on Wheels for this generous gift. Their support is a powerful investment in the future of paediatric cancer care," said Read. "At CHEO, we're committed to providing world-class care and advancing treatment options for children and youth facing cancer. Partnerships like this one help make that possible — and bring renewed hope to families when they need it most." CHEO Research Institute (RI) is at the forefront of paediatric cancer research, with experts advancing both clinical and lab-based studies to improve outcomes for children. As a member of the international Children's Oncology Group, CHEO RI participates in more than 30 multi-centre studies focused on innovative treatments — from safer, less invasive diagnostics to new approaches for brain cancer. In the lab, senior scientists at CHEO RI are leading groundbreaking work, including a first-of-its-kind oral immunotherapy for neuroblastoma, targeted therapies using anti-Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) drugs, and personalized cancer treatments using a pre-clinical transplantation platform. The Handprint Ceremony that marked today's announcement is a signature event of Hyundai Hope on Wheels, where children and families affected by cancer — along with donors, researchers, and community supporters — are invited to leave their painted handprints on a Hyundai vehicle. Each print serves as a symbol of hope and resilience in the fight against childhood cancer and a reminder of the shared commitment to advancing research and care for young cancer patients. The event brought together members of the CHEO and Hyundai communities to honour the resilience of young patients and the importance of ongoing research. "As we continue our first year of Hyundai Hope on Wheels in Canada, it's incredibly moving to see how each Handprint Ceremony brings communities together in support of children and families affected by cancer," said Kirk Merrett, Hyundai Canada's director of human resources and administration and the Hyundai Canada executive who administers Hyundai Hope on Wheels. "Today at CHEO, we're proud to stand alongside world-class researchers, dedicated care teams, and inspiring young patients as we work toward a future without childhood cancer. This is only the beginning of our commitment — and we're honoured to help drive progress, one handprint at a time." Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a newly-formed, registered non-profit dedicated to funding research and care programs, and raising awareness to support young cancer patients and survivors. This donation to CHEO is part of more than $4 million Hyundai Hope on Wheels has committed in 2025 to support paediatric oncology centres across Canada — the beginning of an annual commitment to funding childhood cancer research. Through this initiative, Hyundai Canada is proud to help create brighter futures for children by supporting the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Hyundai Canada EV Road Trip: An Electrifying Adventure to the Arctic Ocean
Starting today, Canadian Hyundai IONIQ 5 owner Patrick Nadeau will drive from Hyundai Auto Canada's head office in Markham, Ontario all the way to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, an odyssey totalling over 15,000 kilometres Along this journey, Patrick Nadeau will create VR content that will be offered at no cost to organizations fighting paediatric cancer, in connection with Hyundai Hope on Wheels MARKHAM, ON , April 24, 2025 /CNW/ - Hyundai Auto Canada is proud to announce the launch of an unprecedented road trip, "The Hyundai Canada EV Road Trip," a bold project that will take a fully electric, 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 all the way to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, driving through five provinces and two territories across Canada . On Thursday, April 24 th, the 100 percent electric, multiple award-winning IONIQ 5 will depart from Hyundai Canada's headquarters in Markham, Ontario , and make its way west across Canada and north to the shores of Arctic Ocean in the hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk , in the Northwest Territories . Along this journey, the vehicle will be covering over 15,000 kilometres of diverse landscapes and remote northern roads. Behind the wheel of this exceptional expedition is Mr. Patrick Nadeau , an electric vehicle enthusiast who drove his own IONIQ 5 from Québec to Mexico in 2022. That journey captivated thousands of Canadians; generating support and intrigue from the EV community and was featured in numerous media outlets. By travelling over 15,000 kilometres without using a drop of fuel, Mr. Nadeau proved that long-distance electric travel is not only possible but also beneficial in many ways. A technological and human mission This project combines both technological ambition and human purpose. It aims to demonstrate that Hyundai's EV innovation through its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) enables long-distance travel—even in remote areas—with a fully electric vehicle. The reliable performance of the IONIQ 5, combined with Canada's rapidly growing charging infrastructure, makes possible what many once thought unachievable - a journey to the heart of the Canadian Arctic with a fully electric vehicle. Of course, a journey like this also has its challenges. As Patrick and his IONIQ 5 make their way north, access to EV charging stations will become increasingly difficult, just like the road conditions. Ferries schedules and availability are also hard to predict given the high flow of water in Spring. Hyundai Canada and Mr. Nadeau will share the realities of this road trip in multiple ways throughout. Over the course of the approximate two-month journey spanning over 15,000 kilometres, Patrick Nadeau will produce exclusive content to be shared across Hyundai Canada's official social media channels. Canadians will be invited to follow the northern adventure through weekly updates, experiencing the challenges, discoveries, and unforgettable moments alongside him. A documentary-style travelogue is also planned to showcase the journey. But the project doesn't end there. In partnership with Hyundai Hope on Wheels —a Canadian nonprofit organization committed to the fight against paediatric cancer—Patrick will also capture immersive virtual reality experiences along the way. These will be offered free of charge to multiple hospitals across the country, allowing young patients to virtually explore the Arctic from their rooms during treatment. "This project is more than just a road trip. It's a statement of purpose. We believe in an electrified future that is accessible, reliable, and inspiring for all Canadians — from urban centres to the furthest reaches of the North," says Christine Smith , director of marketing at Hyundai Canada. About the vehicle To undertake this adventure, Patrick Nadeau will be driving a 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Preferred with the Ultimate package. The sole alteration made to this cutting-edge electric vehicle is a vibrant, custom wrap designed to ensure high visibility for the project throughout this journey. For the rest, the IONIQ 5 remains identical to the model that Canadians can purchase at their local dealership. "As the owner of an IONIQ 5 with over 150,000 kilometres on the odometer, I know the vehicle well enough to trust that no modifications are needed to reach my destination safely," said Patrick Nadeau . "Owning an EV is not the same as a gasoline vehicle, it requires more planning, which EV owners quickly accept and adapt to. The reward for some extra planning is worth it – the joy of instant torque, low cost of ownership, savings on charging versus gas, and a reduced carbon footprint all contribute to my reasons for going electric and for undertaking this epic adventure." The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has taken the automotive world by storm since its launch. It has won numerous prestigious awards such as World Car of the Year, World Electric Car of the Year and World Design of the Year in 2022. Closer to home, it was also crowned Utility Vehicle of the Year and Green Vehicle of the Year in 2023 by the members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). For 2025, the IONIQ 5 is refreshed with numerous enhancements, including an available 84 kWh battery that allows an official range of up to 504 kilometres. To follow Patrick Nadeau's journey to the Arctic, please make sure to follow Hyundai Canada on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. Hyundai Hope On Wheels Commits $27M More For Pediatric Cancer Research
Emmy and Jackson, Hyundai Hope on Wheels ambassadors and cancer survivors. Hyundai Hope on Wheels was founded in 1998 by the automaker and its 850-plus U.S.-based dealerships. For the last 27 years, the nonprofit has focused on providing grants to eligible institutions pursuing critical research to solve the devastating problem of pediatric cancer; so far, that amount has swelled to $277 million. This week, Hyundai announced it would be adding a cherry on top of that generous sundae: an additional $27 million, one million for each of its years of service. This level of funding is critical to medical research, and the Hyundai Hope on Wheels organization is finding ways to distribute it as much as possible. Emmy Cole, ambassador for Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Two young cancer survivors, Emmy Cole and Jackson Trinh, are traveling around the country representing Hyundai Hope on Wheels as ambassadors for the nonprofit. Cole and Trinh are 12 and 10 years old, respectively, and they've been through tough journeys in their young lives. Cole was only two when doctors told her parents she had High-Risk Neuroblastoma and spent many, many nights in the hospital. She has been in remission for six years and is upbeat and hopeful about her future, using her voice to share her story and help others. Albuquerque, New Mexico resident Trinh was seven when he started experiencing intense pain in his leg. At first, doctors thought he was having growing pains but when the fevers started he was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He's also in remission and enthusiastic about helping other kids going through cancer treatment. 'As a parent, I can only imagine the challenges families endure when a child is battling cancer,' said President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Group José Muñoz. Hyundai Hope on Wheels says it's focusing on not just the treatment but 'survivorship' for kids going through cancer treatment onto recovery. Parents and families navigating the process need support throughout, the organization says. Hyundai Hope on Wheels has contributed $277 million to pediatric cancer research, with another $27 ... More million earmarked for 2025. Hyundai is celebrating the organization's outreach by expanding its program even further. Hyundai Hope on Wheels launched in Canada in February and will follow with Mexico later this month. 'Hyundai Hope on Wheels has been a driving force in pediatric cancer research for nearly three decades, and we are proud to expand its reach beyond the U.S. to support children throughout North America,' said CEO of Hyundai Motor North America Randy Parker. As grants across the country are currently limited and shrinking from a federal perspective, private company support like the millions of dollars coming from Hyundai Hope on Wheels will make a big difference. The automaker's support allows researchers to focus on the critical work in the lab and not be distracted by the seemingly endless cycle of applying for grants, explained Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, executive vice president for health sciences, Georgetown University Medical Center. Hyundai Hope on Wheels is making a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer and putting its money to good use for a better future for kids and their families.
