Chandigarh woman sues Maruti Suzuki, dealership for failing to transfer old car ownership; seeks vehicle's court custody

A woman has filed a civil suit against Maruti Suzuki and one of its dealerships in Chandigarh for refusing to transfer the ownership of her old car and allowing a third person to have control of and run the vehicle without getting it noted in the name of the new owner. The suit has been filed by Kulpreet Kaur against Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Autopace Network Private Limited (car dealership). Meanwhile, the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA), Chandigarh and the principal secretary (Transport), Himachal Pradesh, have also been made respondents in the case. Through her counsel, Advocate Ajay Pal Singh, Kaur said she purchased a brand-new car from Autopace Network — a Maruti Suzuki Fronx — and before the purchase, Maruti Suzuki and the dealership, promised her that she would be compensated suitably in case she chose to return her earlier car, Hyundai i10, while buying the new vehicle from the showroom. Kaur said they said a handsome amount would be paid to her in the form of 'suitable adjustments' in the total value of the new car she was buying, in case she handed over the keys of her old vehicle. Kaur said she handed the keys of her old car to the dealership, for which the company and dealership gave a decent incentive to the purchaser by adjusting the value of the used car from the total value of the car that she was purchasing. She said she bought the car in September 2023. However, Kaur's counsel, Singh, argued Kaur is running from pillar to post to find out if, as promised, her old car had been transferred in the name of the new purchaser. However, she found out that the used car has not so far been transferred, and is lying at an undisclosed place, but in her name on paper. On following up with the company and dealership, she was informed her car was handed over to a local car dealer — Jainendra Bhalla of Sector 47, Chandigarh — and he further sold the vehicle to some unknown person. Kaur said that despite her repeated requests, Bhalla has not given any assurance that he will get the vehicle transferred in

RIP: Tragic end to search for missing Bellville woman as body found in guesthouse

What began as a frantic search for a missing Bellville woman has ended in heartbreak after the body of Chantal Pelser was discovered in a Cape Town guesthouse on Wednesday afternoon. She was 52. Pelser had been missing since Sunday, 25 May, after she was last seen driving her silver Hyundai i10 through the Bo-Kaap area around 13:00, reportedly heading toward Kloof Nek Road. Her sudden disappearance prompted a desperate plea for help across social media, with family and friends describing her as vulnerable and urging the public to assist in locating her. After days of silence, hope turned to sorrow when Pelser's body was found in a guesthouse room, following a police investigation that traced her bank card activity to the location. Emergency medical services and law enforcement were already at the scene when relatives arrived. The news was confirmed by Beau Solms, the daughter of Pelser's long-time partner, Linlee Solms. 'We're still in the process of notifying the search agencies and asking them to call it off,' said Beau. She and her mother are expected to officially identify the body on Thursday. According to Lieutenant Colonel Fienie Nimb, spokesperson for the Bellville police, no signs of foul play were discovered at the scene. 'She checked in on Sunday. Her death is currently being treated as a suicide. Investigations are ongoing,' said Nimb. During the search, concern had grown after Pelser's phone went offline shortly after she was last seen. Her vehicle had not triggered any new entries in the License Plate Recognition (LPR) system, further complicating the efforts to locate her. Non-profit organisation PinkLadies, which supports missing persons cases, had flagged Pelser's case as high priority due to concerns about her emotional wellbeing. The family and authorities await official reports and post-mortem results, but the early findings point to a tragic end to a case that had sparked widespread concern and community involvement. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or emotional distress, please seek help. Intoxicated worker involved in multiple collisions, arrested in Verulam

An intoxicated municipality employee's erratic driving culminated in a dramatic series of events in Temple Valley, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident began around 17:43 when a concerned motorist reached out to the Operations Centre for assistance after witnessing a hit-and-run involving a white Toyota Hilux bakkie and his own silver Hyundai i10 on Ireland Street, Verulam CBD. The motorist detailed how the Toyota Hilux, driven by a 32-year-old male, initially stopped after the collision but fled when quizzed about his sobriety. Demonstrating alarming recklessness, the driver sped off, prompting the motorist to follow the bakkie while reporting the situation to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for help. As RUSA officers raced to locate the vehicle, the intoxicated driver continued to navigate the streets erratically, eventually colliding with a RUSA response vehicle — a white Toyota Fortuner — after failing to stop at a stop street in Temple Valley. Undeterred, the driver attempted yet again to escape, but was swiftly boxed in by backup officers who had arrived on the scene. According to RUSA, upon apprehension, the driver identified himself as a plumber employed by the eThekwini Water & Sanitation Department and revealed that the bakkie was a municipal vehicle. Fortunately, the RUSA officer involved in the collision was unharmed. The intoxicated driver was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation. This alarming incident raises significant concerns regarding road safety and the responsibility of public employees while operating municipal vehicles. Authorities are expected to investigate further, ensuring accountability for those who endanger the lives of others while under the influence.

Top 10 cheapest cars to insure for new drivers in 2025

Car insurance can be costly - particularly for those under 25 who tend to have the highest premiums Many drivers, or even those still in the learning phase, often overlook car insurance when contemplating purchasing a new vehicle. However, car insurance can be quite expensive, with various factors influencing the cost. The cost of car insurance is a big concern for drivers, particularly those under 25 who tend to have the highest premiums. A recent RAC Report on Motoring said 44% of 17–24-year-old drivers list it as their top concern. According to RAC, the most effective way of reducing your insurance premiums - particularly as a young driver - is to choose the right car. Insurance groups are decided by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), and cars in the lowest groups are generally the cheapest to insure. Cars in low insurance groups tend to be small, affordable and have low-powered engines - though that isn't always the case. RAC recommends factoring in where you live and where you park your can when considering insurance costs. RAC shared a list of the cheapest new cars to insure in 2025, based on the car's quoted insurance groups. It points out that it is designed as a guide, and insurance costs can vary depending on your individual circumstances. According to RAC, the biggest factor that makes a car cheap to insure is its performance. They said: "Generally, a car with a large, powerful engine has a higher insurance premium than one with a small engine and more modest performance. "Insurers deem high performance cars more likely to be involved in a collision at a higher speed, and more expensive to repair or replace alongside that." Other factors that make a car cheaper to insure is a good crash safety rating, a low purchase cost and a lack of popularity with thieves.
