Rheinmetall to expand satellite business, citing Ukraine support deal

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Rheinmetall and Finnish satellite manufacturer ICEYE signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday, establishing a joint venture focused on satellite production. The new company, named 'Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions,' represents a significant step in the German defense giant's expansion into the space domain and a continuation of Germany's and Europe's broader rearmament efforts. Under the agreement, Rheinmetall will hold a 60% majority stake in the venture, with ICEYE owning the remaining 40%. The joint venture will focus initially on manufacturing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites before expanding to other space capabilities. Defense companies jack up Germany's auto industry to make weapons fast SAR technology allows surveillance satellites to see through clouds and can increase the resolution of the output image. It has been ICEYE's area of specialization, with Rheinmetall describing its partner as a 'globally leading SAR satellite manufacturer' in its press release. Production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with Rheinmetall's Neuss facility in western Germany serving as one of the primary manufacturing sites. The factory was previously focused on automotive manufacturing. This satellite-building initiative is part of a broader 'Rheinmetall Space Cluster' being created by the German defense company. 'With the establishment of the new joint venture, we are making further inroads into the space domain,' said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. 'We are thus not only responding to the increased demand for space-based reconnaissance capabilities among armed and security forces worldwide, but also contributing to the preservation and expansion of Germany as a centre of technology.' The partnership builds on an existing collaboration that reached a significant milestone in November 2024, when Rheinmetall and Ukraine signed a contract – with German government support – to provide critical SAR satellite data to Ukraine's Ministry of Defence. The arrangement extends the satellite reconnaissance capabilities that ICEYE has been providing to Ukraine since 2022, helping inform operational planning as Ukrainian forces face the continued onslaught of Russian troops in the third year of Moscow's full-scale war. Also in 2024, Rheinmetall secured the exclusive rights to market SAR satellites to government and military users in Germany and Hungary. Thursday's move aligns with Rheinmetall's ambitions of grabbing market share amid skyrocketing demand for military hardware in Europe, with an aggressive Russia to the east and an increasingly unpredictable United States to the west. As part of this effort, Rheinmetall has started to repurpose some of its automotive manufacturing capacity. 'Our highly qualified colleagues at the Neuss site are being given a promising new perspective for the future,' said the arms maker's CEO of the pivot.

German arms giant Rheinmetall to build satellites with joint venture

German arms giant Rheinmetall is to begin producing satellites, the Dusseldorf-based company said on Thursday. Rheinmetall has signed a memorandum of understanding with leading Finnish satellite manufacturer ICEYE to establish a "joint venture for satellite production." The new venture, termed Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions, is to have Rheinmetall as the majority shareholder with 60% of shares, while ICEYE holds 40%. Production is to take place at a site in Neuss, western Germany, and is set to begin by the summer of 2026. "With the establishment of the new joint venture, we are making further inroads into the space domain,' said Rheinmetall chief executive Armin Papperger. " "We are thus not only responding to the increased demand for space-based reconnaissance capabilities among armed and security forces worldwide, but also contributing to the preservation and expansion of Germany as a centre of technology," he added. Rheinmetall's site in Neuss, with 1500 employees, previously belonged to the company's auto parts division. However, the company is reorienting itself fully towards the defence business as Europe seeks to rearm in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Finland's ICEYE produces Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, which "can generate high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or time of day." The satellites have been used by the Ukrainian military in the conflict with Russia.

Rheinmetall, ICEYE in initial deal to make military satellites

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Rheinmetall has agreed with Finland's ICEYE to form a joint venture to make military satellites, part of a drive to repurpose automotive factories to serve the booming defence sector instead. In a statement on Thursday, the defence contractor said it signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a venture called Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions in which Rheinmetall will hold a 60% stake and satellite operator ICEYE the remainder. Definitive agreements and official approvals are still pending, it added. The partners plan to build synthetic aperture radar satellites, which can generate images at night and through clouds, at sites including a Rheinmetall factory for car components in the western city of Neuss. Rheinmetall has been a pioneer in a drive to convert some production capacity of Germany's struggling car industry for use by the expanding defence industry as European governments invest to respond to what they see as an increasingly aggressive Russia. Rheinmetall, Europe's top ammunition maker, earlier on Thursday reaffirmed that it could exceed its 2025 guidance, citing higher demand from Germany, Ukraine and other European nations.

Rheinmetall and ICEYE plan to establish a joint venture - satellite production and other space solutions in the new Rheinmetall Space Cluster

The joint venture further strengthens ICEYE's focus on developing space-based defense technology. HELSINKI and DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Rheinmetall and the globally leading SAR satellite manufacturer ICEYE are further intensifying their cooperation. The two companies intend to establish a joint venture for satellite production. A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed on May 8, 2025. Rheinmetall is to be the majority shareholder in the new joint venture named Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions with 60 per cent of the shares, while ICEYE will hold 40 per cent. The foundation is still subject to definitive agreements and official approvals. As part of a Rheinmetall Space Cluster in Germany, Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions is to manufacture satellites, starting with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites and subsequently other space solutions. Production is to take place at the Neuss site, among others, and is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026. "With the establishment of the new joint venture, we are making further inroads into the space domain," says Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. "We are thus not only responding to the increased demand for space-based reconnaissance capabilities among armed and security forces worldwide, but also contributing to the preservation and expansion of Germany as a centre of technology. Our highly qualified colleagues at the Neuss site are being given a promising new perspective for the future. We are delighted to expand our cooperation with our proven partner ICEYE." "ICEYE aims to be the primary provider of critical infrastructure for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to allied nations. We are excited to deepen our strategic collaboration with Rheinmetall by establishing a joint venture. This joint venture further strengthens our focus on developing space-based technology for the needs of global defense markets and securing sovereign defense capabilities for Europe," says Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE. SAR satellites offer the advantage over conventional satellites that they can generate high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or time of day. These are very detailed and make even the smallest objects on the earth's surface identifiable. This can bring decisive advantages for the armed forces in terms of surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance, or their own positioning on the battlefield. Back in June 2024, the Düsseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall announced its participation in the world's largest fleet of radar reconnaissance satellites. In September 2024, Rheinmetall and ICEYE had further intensified their cooperation. In the course of this, Rheinmetall had secured exclusive rights to market the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites to military and government end users in both the German and Hungarian markets. The first major milestone in the intensified cooperation between Rheinmetall and the SAR satellite company ICEYE was reached in November 2024. To meet Ukraine's urgent need for SAR imaging satellite reconnaissance capabilities, Rheinmetall and Ukraine had signed a contract with the support of the German government. The agreement extends the SAR data and other support that Ukraine received from ICEYE during the war. About ICEYE ICEYE delivers unparalleled persistent monitoring capabilities to detect and respond to changes in any location on Earth, faster and more accurately than ever before. Owning the world's largest synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, ICEYE provides objective, near real-time insights, ensuring that customers have unmatched access to actionable data, day or night, even in challenging environmental conditions.
