Confident of improving Bangalore traffic by 25-30%: EaseMyTrip's Pitti

EaseMyTrip co-founder Prashant Pitti has met with the Commissioners of the Bengaluru Traffic Police, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike and City Police and said that the traffic situation in the city will improve by 25-30 per cent within a year. Sharing an update on the Rs 1 crore Bengaluru traffic project, Prashant Pitti wrote on X, "MAJOR UPDATE on Bangalore Traffic Project! I am confident of improving Bangalore traffic by 25-30 per cent within a year's time." In his detailed social media post, he added, "1. Collaboration at Scale In just 10 days, after meeting the commissioners of BTP, BBMP, CP, Google team, IISC professors, Scientist, Road Engineers, Traffic Related Entrepreneurs. All three newly appointed commissioners were very kind to invite me to showcase existing capabilities AND collaborate to work together. For the first time we are bringing all key public and private players - to the same table." He added that the BTP and IISC have simulation models, which can create re-routing permutations and he has requested the data from Google, Uber, Ola and Rapido that will help with the re-routing. "2. Quick Optimization Projects A) Bangalore Traffic Simulators: Both BTP and IISC have simulation models, which can create millions of re-routing permutations to reduce travel-time (not shortest distance). I have requested the data from Google, Uber, Ola, Rapido, that will make models predict better re-routing. Some of them have confirmed to help. Waiting for others. If the model starts working, we will be able to predict where/when gridlock is going to happen, so we can fix it before it occurs," the X post read. He also suggested Fixing Feedback Loop and Hyperlocal Rain Predictor for solve the traffic congestion. Prashant Pitti wrote, "B) Fixing Feedback Loop: Govt already has apps, where people can report potholes. I will take ownership of that app, to increase its scope (report illegal parking, broken signal, wrong side driving, water logging, broken vehicle, etc). I will also increase accountability and recognition by showcasing all the complaints lodged AND action-taken (along with time-stamp) publicly. C) Hyperlocal Rain Predictor: Govt closes the road to do infra/maintenance work, but then it starts raining on that patch of road and work halts. This leads to crazy downtime and traffic congestion. Hyperlocal Rain Predictor project will also allow us to fix drainage issues, even before it happens." He said that a pilot project with Green Wave Signals is being carried out to put the traffic lights in sync. "D) Green Wave Signals: Putting traffic lights in sync, so they move vehicles in waves, instead of stopping at every junction. A pilot is already happening, we will analyse the results to see if it makes sense to be done at City level," he wrote. "3. The Vision for IndiaMany people mentioned in my last post "Bangalore Traffic is an Infra problem", congrats on stating the obvious. If we continue to wait for the infra to become better, then we are merely playing a catch-up game with the West. There is so much scope to optimize current infra, and I would rather focus on that. This is no longer about rants or blaming the system. It's about practical optimism - believing that with data, intent, and collaboration, we can improve what feels unfixable," the X post read. Further, he asked for public support so that the project reaches the right authorities. He wrote, "4. Ask from Readers: A) Continue your support and share/comment. Earlier on July 14, Pitti announced a Rs 1 crore commitment to tackle traffic congestion in Bengaluru using AI and satellite data, urging authorities and citizens to join hands in fixing the city's growing traffic problem. In a detailed post on X, EaseMyTrip co-founder Pitti shared that he was stuck in traffic for over two hours while covering just 11 km late at night in Bengaluru. He said the worst part was being stranded at a choke point on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) for 100 minutes, with no traffic light or police officer in sight. "I am committing INR 1 Cr to find Bangalore Choke-Points via Google Maps & AI. 11 km ??' 2.15 hours in Bangalore Traffic on Saturday late night! I was stuck at one choke-point at ORR, where I spent 100 minutes struggling to understand why there is no traffic-light or cop here," Pitti posted on X.

Sashikumar Ganesan, professor, Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bengaluru, his journey into AI research wasn't as straightforward. Trained in computational mathematics for about two decades, Ganesan's entry into AI research happened in 2020—during the Covid-19 outbreak—when he was roped in, along with few colleagues, into building a model to predict the pandemic's trajectory. 'I was a core computational mathematics person. But since Covid, I have gone into Python , and machine learning neural networks. Ganesan and IISc are not alone. Academics across the country are increasingly getting immersed in AI research, hoping to uncover its potential. Few hundred kilometres from IISc, Manjunath K N, associate professor in computer science and engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology in Manipal , Karnataka, along with a team of experts are deep at work building 'coronary artery disease diagnosis and prediction systems using AI'. After a Rs 81-lakh funding for proof of concept (PoC), the project—in its second phase—secured Rs 300 crore in funding from the education ministry, and `30 crore from industry partners. 'Our work focuses on developing the deep learning base model for improvising the cardiology workflow,' he said. This project initiated by the government is primarily focussed on creating affordable healthcare services, impacting those at the grassroot level and not just the rich. This is being done using the AI platform in collaboration with researchers from other leading institutes in the country. All the way in New Delhi, Manan Suri, associate professor, and principal investigator, neuromorphic hardware research group at Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) Delhi and his team are working on designing less power-consuming hardware for sustainable compute—a hot area currently given how expensive computing is. The team is focusing on reducing energy consumption, improving computation speed, and on ways to make the chip more compact. 'Most of our effort is directed towards finding a sweet spot or to extract the best while optimising one or more of these metrics,' said Suri. In another department in IIT-Delhi, Manabendra Saharia, an associate faculty at the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence , is engaged in monitoring and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, droughts, and landslides using AI. Saharia is collaborating with Indian space agency ISRO, Ministry of Earth Sciences , and international partners to develop systems that can map and forecast disasters in advance. 'The goal is to make hazard forecasting more scalable, adaptive, and useful for decision-makers,' he said. Unlike in the US, the private sector in India lags in participating in research and development. This, experts say, needs to pick up. V. Ramgopal Rao, group vice-chancellor at BITS Pilani said India is not doing enough when it comes to contribution of institutes in driving advancements in new-age technology like AI. 'China's Deepseek and the West's OpenAI show what can be achieved when academia, government, and industry align with strategic clarity and serious investment,' he said. 'Indian academia is talented but resource-constrained, with limited access to compute, data, and translational pathways,' said Rao, previously a director at IIT Delhi and chair professor for nanoelectronics at both IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. To be sure, while the government is investing resources to advance AI research, the gestation period of initiatives is still high. AI Research in Academia IISc BENGALURU ETtech Sashikumar Ganesan's team at IISc is collaborating with IBM and engineering companies to do science with help of LLMs. While LLMs can discuss scientific topics, they cannot yet 'do science and engineering' in the way researchers and engineers need. To overcome this limitation, Ganesan and his startup team are working on enabling foundational models to 'do science' by integrating computational physics, domain knowledge & equation-solving capabilities. This research aims to build models that go beyond text generation to deliver scientifically validated outputs IIT DELHI ETtech Manabendra Saharia at IIT Delhi is involved in developing systems that can map and forecast disasters in advance. This is in collaboration with Isro, Ministry of Earth Sciences and global partners. The most recently developed AI model is called DeepSARFlood that automatically maps floods through satellite radar data that penetrates clouds and works round the clock. The project is funded by the IndiaAI mission and is being extended to monitor landslides and damaged infrastructure. DELHI TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY ETtech IT department head Dinesh K Vishwakarma and his team are working to create AI models for online fake news and hate speech detection, trained on real-life incidents. They are also working on AI model vulnerability identification using 'noise' attacks and measuring success ratios for accuracy. Researchers also collaborate with agriculture scientists on smart agriculture and crop disease detection AI. Vishwakarma worked on AI-powered human activity recognition for smart homes, with the aim of applying this to senior care. IIT HYDERABAD Maunendra Sankar Desarkar, an associate professor in IIT Hyderabad's Department of AI is focusing on Natural Language Processing or NLP or foundational language models or Large Language Models (LLMs). Most of the LLMs that people are using now are not from India and have very little Indian content, he says. To find a solution, Desarkar is working on a model called BharatGen, which is an initiative supported and funded by the government of India. The institute also has a Technology Innovation Hub for Autonomous Navigation (TIHAN), funded by the Department of Science and Technology under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. TIHAN has India's first Autonomous Navigation Testbed (Aerial & terrestrial) facility, according toDesarkar. He along with other faculty members at the AI department are also working on use of AI for specific domains like healthcare, agriculture, astrophysics, process optimization, networks, etc. 'IIT Hyderabad has already developed a driverless campus shuttle that offers mobility services across the institute campus,' he said. The youth in India is ready and disruptive today, setting research milestones in different sectors, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the YUGM Conclave here on Tuesday. YUGM ("confluence" in Sanskrit) is a first-of-its-kind strategic conclave convening leaders from government, academia, industry, and the innovation ecosystem. The Prime Minister said the YUGM is a confluence of stakeholders joined together to work towards Viksit Bharat, and "will strengthen efforts to boost the country's innovation capacity and deep tech advancements". 'Our endeavour is to empower the youth with skills that make them self-reliant and position India as a global innovation hub,' the PM said. Asserting India's strong position for research and development, he added that 'our youth is ready and disruptive today, and it is achieving milestones in different sectors'. PM Modi said this, citing innovations such as the 410-metre-long first Hyperloop test track by IIT Madras researchers, and 'brain on a chip' technology capable of storing and processing data in 16,500 states within a molecular film by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC). He noted that "India's future depends on the youth" and to make them future leaders, the 'education system shares a great responsibility'. "We are modernising the country's education system according to the needs of the 21st century," PM Modi said. The PM informed about the DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) platform under which the One Nation, One Digital infrastructure has been established. 'The infrastructure is AI-based, scalable and is being used to develop textbooks in over 30 Indian languages and seven foreign languages,' the PM said. The PM also lauded the research ecosystem in the country, which more than doubled in its gross expenditure -- over Rs 1.15 crore currently from just Rs 60 crore in 2013-14. To boost research in the country, the PM informed the launch of various programmes such as state-of-the-art research parks; the establishment of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), One Nation, One Subscription; and PM Research Fellowship, among others. 'The country's innovation culture is also growing -- from 40,000 patents in 2014, we now have over 80,000. This shows that the youth are getting support,' he said, while also stressing India's growth and representations in global rankings, such as in the QS rankings. Further, the PM noted the opening of Indian campuses in Abu Dhabi (IIT Delhi) and Tanzania (IIT Madras), as well as the setting up of foreign university campuses in India. 'This will pave the way for academic exchange, research collaboration, and cross-cultural learning exposure to our students". He called on the industry leaders to stand with young researchers, guide and fund them to foster larger innovations. "It is crucial that the journey from idea to prototype to product is completed in the shortest time possible," the PM said. While India is rapidly adopting AI and AI excellence centres are being increasingly established, "our vision is to make AI work for India', the PM said. The event held at the Bharat Mandapam was driven by a collaborative project of around Rs 1,400 crore with joint investment from the Wadhwani Foundation and government institutions.
