IMSA Road America results, points: BMW Team RLL takes first win of season in top-two sweep
BMW M Team RLL found the execution that it's been missing, earning its first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory this season on a strategy call at Road America. With one hour remaining, Team RLL pitted its pair of BMW M Hybrid V8s and then capitalized when the fifth caution flew several minutes later. The No. 24 BMW M Team RLL of Phillip Eng and Dries Vanthoor inherited the lead and scored the victory over its No. 25 teammate car of Marco Wittmann and Sheldon van der Linde. IMSA ROAD AMERICA RESULTS: Click here for overall l By class It marked the second 1-2 finish in the Grand Touring Prototype category for BMW, which will be splitting from Team RLL after this year, but the manufacturer is expected to remain in IMSA's top division. 'The team did a strategic masterclass boxing us on a very early window,' Eng said. It's the 24th class victory for Team RLL and its third in GTP. The team opened the 2025 season with four consecutive poles by the No. 24 in the premier hybrid class, but misfortune and mistakes kept the team out of victory lane. 'It's been such a difficult, weird season with a lot of highlights but a lot of lows for us as well for sure,' Vanthoor said. 'We never gave up. We had a very bad stop (early in the Road America race), but the car was amazing today. Philipp did a great job. We knew we had to take risks because we were last. Sometimes those don't work out, but today it did. 'Super happy to finally get a win. Many poles but not a win so glad to bring it home today.' The No. 93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06, which was aiming for a third consecutive victory, finished third after starting from the pole position. The Road America winners in other categories: LMP2: No. 99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2 07 with co-drivers Dane Cameron and PJ Hyett. It's the second consecutive victory for the team, which moved into the championship lead by 107 points. It's AO Racing's fifth IMSA class win this season (Sebring in GTD Pro, GTD in Long Beach, GTD Pro in Laguna Seca and LMP2 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park). GTD Pro: No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO with co-drivers Madison Snow and Neil Verhagen. It's the second IMSA class win this year for Paul Miller Racing, which won at Watkins Glen with its No. 48 car. In the championship standings, Corvette drivers Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims lead by 30 points. GTD: No. 021 Triarsi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3 with co-drivers Kenton Koch and Onofrio Triarsi. It's the first IMSA class win for the team, whose previous best finish was fourth four times. BMW M Team RLL's M8 Hybrids took the next two starting spots on the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Colin Braun, who won with Meyer Shank Racing teammate Tom Blomqvist in the most recent Grand Touring Prototype race at Watkins Glen International, qualified the No. 60 Acura ARX-06 in fourth. Yelloly and van der Zande won the GTP category at Detroit, starting the Acura ARX-06's winning streak into Road America after Porsche Penske Motorsport opened the season with four conseuctive victories. Though the drivers championship remains firmly in PPM's control with three races remaining, Acura has closed to 90 points behind Porsche in the manufactuer standings. How to watch 2025 IMSA Road America on Peacock: Streaming info, start times and daily schedules
Acura will try to maintain a two-month win streak in the Grand Touring Prototype category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. After wins at Detroit (the No. 93 ARX-06) and Watkins Glen International (the No. 60 ARX-06), the Meyer Shank Racing Acuras will return with IMSA's premier division at Road America — where the manufacturer is winless since a 2022 repave. But Tom Blomqvist, who won at Watkins Glen with co-driver Colin Braun, is optimistic after a strong test at the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. 'I'd say it's probably my favorite track from an enjoyment level to drive,' Blomqvist said. 'I think also we're lucky that it's a great track for our car. It really brings out the strengths. 'In the past, it's always been a strong track for us, so I don't see a reason why it's not going to be again. I think we we've really made good gains as a team as well. Every race we're kind of getting better with the new organization, as there's a lot of new faces and new people. I feel like we're just getting stronger. So, yeah, I think we're hopeful that we can fight for the victory again next weekend.' After taking the 2024 season off, MSR has returned to full-time competition with heavier involvement from Honda Racing Corporation in the strategy and engineering of its No. 93 ARX-06. Acura's winning run has interrupted a strong start for Porsche Penske Motorsport, which won the first four races this season (most recently in mid-May at Laguna Seca) and still maintains a healthy lead in the championship standings. Full-time manufacturers BMW and Cadillac are seeking their first GTP wins in 2025. The GTP category has been on a six-week layoff since mid-June at Watkins Glen and returns for the only sprint race that will feature all four divisions of the SportsCar Championship. It's also the last two-hour, 40-minute race for a while at Road America, whose event will increase to six hours next year. Last year, Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy combined for a win in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963. Jaminet remains in the No. 6 with Matt Campbell, and Tandy is paired with Felipe Nasr in the No. 7, which leads the points.
