‘Absolute goosebumps,' says Sachin Tendulkar; ‘A treat to watch,' says Sourav Ganguly as legends react to India's stunning win in 5th Test

India pulled off one of the most memorable comebacks one could ever get to see in Test cricket to beat England by six runs at The Oval and draw the five-Test series 2-2. They were down and out and England were seemingly home and free for much of the fourth day but a late flurry of wickets, alongwith Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna suddenly stopping the flow of runs put England under pressure. The pair then tightened the noose in the short but immensely dramatic Day 5 and astonishingly, India went on to win by six runs This is despite England needing just 74 to win at one point on Day 4 with as many as seven wickets in hand while Joe Root and Harry Brook were on a partnership of 195 runs in 210 balls. Naturally, this has led to reactions from across the board in the cricket world and beyond. India legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were among the first to post. Test cricket… absolute goosebumps. Series 2–2, Performance 10/10! SUPERMEN from INDIA! What a Win. ???????? — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) August 4, 2025 Fantastic from Team India . Sport. #ENGvIND — Alexandra Hartley (@AlexHartley93) August 4, 2025 Test cricket ?? — Faf Du Plessis (@faf1307) August 4, 2025 Siraj's lion-hearted effort that helped India turn things around from a seemingly hopeless place on Day 4 and fittingly, it was the 31-year-old fast bowler who took the final wicket at the Oval and sealed a memorable win for the visitors. With England six runs away from victory, Siraj torpedoed in a low full toss first ball of the 89th over and uprooted Gus Atkinson's off stump to send the Indian fans at the ground and his teammates into a tizzy. Siraj had started the proceedings on Day 5 by dismissing Jamie Overton, who had made the match look rather academical after hitting two boundaries early on. Prasidh would strike soon after when he rattled Josh Tongue stumps with the visitors needing just 1 wicket to win. This forced Chris Woakes to walk in with his hand in a sling and tucked away in his sweater. Atkinson did fairly well after that to farm strike and protect Woakes. However, it wasn't to last too long and England, incredibly, lost a Test match despite needing just over 70 runs to win with as many as seven wickets in hand at one point on Day 4.

Ex-India Coach Blasted For 'Fat Shaming' Oval Curator During 5th England Test

Former India player and ex-coach of the national cricket team, Sanjay Bangar, has sparked controversy with his comment on-air during the India vs England fifth Test at The Oval, London. The remark from Bangar came on Day 3 of the match. During commentary, the former India all-rounder fat shamed Oval curator while discussing how the appearance of the pitch changed on the third day of the game. The pitch looked extremely green for the first two days due to the grass on it and that saw the fast bowlers having a lot of fun. A total of 21 wickets fell in the first two days. However, on the third day, the pitch got a bit brownish as a lot of grass disappeared from the surface. While giving the reason behind it, Bangar stated that it was due to the heavy roller that was being used. This is when he made the controversial remark. "That indeed is a very heavy roller, I must say. Not necessarily for the weight of the roller, but also the weight of the groundsman sitting on it," Bangar said on Star Sports, as quoted by Times Now. The ex-India player was blasted on social media for his remark. Check out some of the reactions here - Doesn't make a difference if u are a manjrekar or A bangar.. Sanjay s on jio hotstar are terrible... #ENGvIND #ENGvsIND #INDvsENG — Ankit Shah (@ankitshah1091) August 2, 2025 Dear Sanjay Bangar, Please refrain from bashing the groundsman, Lee Fortis. Commenting on someone's weight, especially in a public broadcast, is uncalled for. As a commentator, it's imp to maintain respect and dignity in your remarks. Let's keep the focus on the game. #INDvENG — Ashok Vihari (@Gubbinsolo) August 2, 2025 Bangar on Day 3 also lavished praise on pacer Akash Deep's fluent batting effort in India's second innings that provided a vital boost to the visiting side in the fifth Test. Akash, who batted at number 4 as a nightwatchman played a memorable knock of 66 runs, laced with 12 fours and was involved in a 107-run third-wicket partnership with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The duo not only rescued India's innings but also set the platform for the batters to come. "Akash Deep took his chances early on against Bethell in the very first over, but after that, he was very, very thoughtful. He played like a proper batsman; he is capable of batting, and he was the one who saved India from a follow-on in the Brisbane Test match. He showed a lot of heart and wasn't afraid of the short ball. "He took his chances when the field was up, defended when the field was back, and ran really well between the wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal's contribution was also immense in that partnership, as he made sure Akash Deep stayed in the zone and helped him stitch that partnership together," Bangar said on JioHotstar.
