Tom Aldred signs one-year contract extension with Mohun Bagan Super Giant

New Delhi [India], May 12 (ANI): Mohun Bagan Super Giant centre-back Tom Aldred has signed a fresh one-year contract with the Mariners, the Indian Super League (ISL) club announced on Saturday. The new deal will see the defender don the Green and Maroons till the end of the 2025-26 season, as per the ISL official website. Aldred, who joined the Mariners from A-League outfit Brisbane Roar ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, quickly became a fan favourite. The 34-year-old played a crucial role in the heart of defence during a memorable season for the Kolkata-based side. Under the leadership of head coach Jose Molina, MBSG retained the ISL Shield and clinched the ISL Cup with a victory over Bengaluru FC in the final, becoming only the second team in ISL history to achieve the double. The Mariners also finished as runners-up in the Durand Cup. Aldred made 32 appearances across all competitions and, aside from his defensive solidity, also contributed in attack, mostly from set-piece situations, with three goals and one assist. With his future now secured, the experienced defender will aim to build on this strong season and lead from the back once again in 2025-26. Earlier, Mohun Bagan Super Giant last featured in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, where FC Goa put them to the sword, beating them 3-1 to progress to the final of the competition. Goals from Brison Fernandes (20'), Iker Guarrotxena (51' penalty), and Borja Herrera (58') sealed a comfortable victory for Manolo Marquez's side over Bastab Roy's young guns. (ANI)

FC Goa crowned Kalinga Super Cup champions after 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC

Bhubaneswar: It was a fairytale end to coach Manolo Marquez's tenure at FC Goa as his men bid him adieu with the perfect parting gift by clinching the Kalinga Super Cup with a dominant 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC here on Saturday. While the trophy presentation was conducted indoors after a sudden cyclonic storm and rains affected a proper ceremony in front of its supporters, it could not dampen FC Goa's celebrations following their brilliant performance at Kalinga Stadium. Wearing black armbands in tribute to the victims of Lairai Devi Temple in Goa, the Gaurs took the wind away from under Jamshedpur players' feet as Borja Herrera, who was adjudged the player of the match, scored a brace (23', 51') followed by another strike from Dejan Drazic (72') earned them their first trophy since the 2021 Durand Cup. As for Khalid Jamil and his Red Miners, it was heartbreak for them as they conceded three goals and a defeat having not conceded a single of them in this edition before the final. It was a speedy start to the match with both teams pressing high from the word-go and trying to build the momentum for that all-important breakthrough. For Jamshedpur, Rei Tachikawa went for a long shot in the first minute itself and captain Javi Hernandez then darted into the box from the left for a shot that was well saved by young Goa custodian Hrithik Tiwari in the second minute. Goa, however, began growing into the game soon after with Herrera and Aakash Sangwan looking to control the game from the left and right flanks respectively. The youngster shot the ball low to the left of Albino Gomes, who had no option but to parry it near an onrushing Herrera, who shot the rebound only for Stephen Eze to block. However, there was no stopping the Spaniard on the second rebound as he made no mistake in shooting it higher and into the left of the goal. The breakthrough only made Goa more dominant even as Jamshedpur tried their best to get back into the game. Their best chance of the half came in the 43rd minute from a corner kick that almost hit the outstretched hand of Sandesh Jhingan in front of the goal Instead, Lazar Cirkovic's header hit the woodwork. All plans and strategies that Jamil might have discussed during the break came to naught soon after the change of end as Gomes, who had kept three clean sheets in the tournament so far, was beaten by a screamer out of nowhere from Herrera, who had made a run from the midfield. It was Herrera's fourth goal of the Super Cup as he levelled with teammate Iker Guarrotxena as the topscorer while taking the match away from Jamshedpur. However, to the further disappointment of the Red Miners fans, who had long been their No. 12 of the final with their cheers, it was Drazic who sealed the match and the trophy for his team by receiving a long through from Carl McHugh and going around Gomes to confidently put the ball into the net and the Red Miners' dreams of a trophy into dust.

'All four teams have the same target. And we are all in that moment of the competition where every game is very difficult,' India and FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez said at Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. Marquez's Goa will be vying it out with ISL Shield and Cup winners Mohun Bagan in an afternoon fixture and Jamshedpur FC are set to lock horns with Mumbai City FC in the game scheduled for the evening. While the absence of the star foreigners in the ISL champions' squad makes FC Goa the favourites in their last-four clash, their Spanish head coach is not ready to pay heed to the statistics. Bagan's assistant coach Bastab Roy, who is leading in the absence of Jose Molina, admitted that they have a tough job against Goa.

Kalinga Super Cup: Mohun Bagan SG sail past Kerala Blasters to seal SF spot

Bhubaneswar: The young guns of Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Kerala Blasters FC 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 here on Saturday. The ISL Shield and Cup-winning Mariners, fielding an all-Indian squad except for Portuguese defender Nuno Reis, scored once in each half through Sahal Abdul Samad (22') and Suhail Ahmad Bhat (51'). Sreekuttan MS (90+4') pulled one back for the Blasters, but it was too little, too late as Mohun Bagan SG, helped by a solid performance from goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem, entered the semifinals. Bastab Roy's side will face the winners of the clash between FC Goa and Punjab FC in the semifinal on April 30. The game began at a leisurely pace, with both teams not committing many bodies in the opposition half. After 20 minutes of no goalmouth action, Mohun Bagan SG churned out the opener with their first meaningful attack of the match. With some lightning-quick footwork, Salahudheen Adnan twisted and turned past left-back Naocha Singh and slipped a cross into the six-yard box. Getting on the end of it was Sahal Abdul Samad, who, with a drop of a shoulder, swiftly evaded Ruivah Hormipam's challenge and dinked the ball over goalkeeper Sachin Suresh to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute. From then on, it was all Kerala Blasters, who were left rattled by the Mariners and grew desperate for the equaliser. Noah Sadaoui, scorer of a stunning long ranger against East Bengal, tried the same trick once again, cutting in from the right and shooting from distance. But he didn't get enough elevation, and the ball landed straight into the gloves of Dheeraj Singh. The Blasters became increasingly dangerous from short corners. In the 30th minute, after playing a one-two with Vibin Mohanan, Sadaoui drilled a low cross that was hacked clear by Dippendu Biswas. Later, from another short corner, Hormipam's cross-turned-shot almost landed in the top corner, with Dheeraj doing well to tip it over. In the first half of added time, Mohammed Aimen was fed on the left wing by Vibin. The midfielder cut in from the left before seeing his right-footer swerve over the bar. Before Kerala Blasters could even get into gear for the second half, Mohun Bagan SG scored another goal. When Sachin produced a wonderful one-on-one save to deny Salahudheen in the 47th minute, it wasn't enough of a wake-up call for David Català's side. Just four minutes later, Ashique Kuruniyan created the second goal from the left flank. The Indian international skipped past Hormipam and squared an inch-perfect ball into the six-yard box for Suhail Ahmad Bhat to guide it into the net with ease. The rest of the second half was all about Dheeraj Singh keeping the Kerala Blasters forward at bay, but it wasn't until after Jesús Jiménez missed a couple of gilt-edged chances – half-volleying over the bar in the 65th minute and then curling it wide of the far post after going clean through on goal in the 67th. Three minutes later, Dheeraj palmed over substitute Kwame Peprah's right-footed shot from a narrow angle. With just five minutes to go, Peprah tried to set up Jiménez with a low cross into the six-yard box, but the Spaniard couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough and missed it completely. Dheeraj again made himself big to deny Peprah from six yards before Ebindas Y's attempt on the rebound was cleared off the line by Amandeep. The Mohun Bagan custodian was finally beaten in the 94th minute when Jiménez slipped a neat ball for Sreekuttan on the right. The substitute thrashed it over Dheeraj and into the back of the net, but it only turned out to be a consolation strike.
