ISL: Chennaiyin FC Mutually Part Ways With Head Coach Owen Coyle

Last Updated: Chennaiyin and Coyle have parted ways after a disappointing 2024-25 ISL season. Coyle, who led the team to the playoffs in 2023, leaves as one of ISL's most successful managers. Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Chennaiyin FC and head coach Owen Coyle have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced on Thursday. 'Chennaiyin FC and Head Coach Owen Coyle have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Vaathi for his invaluable contributions to the club and wish him the very best in his future endeavours," the club posted on X (formerly Twitter). Coyle had signed a contract extension in 2023 that was set to keep him at the club until 2026. Underwhelming Season Ends in Separation Chennaiyin FC endured a disappointing 2024–25 ISL campaign, finishing 11th in the standings with just seven wins in 24 matches. Although the season began promisingly under Coyle's leadership — with the club remaining unbeaten on the road and collecting seven points from their first four games — they failed to build on that momentum. Their campaign ended on a high note with a dominant 5-2 home win over Jamshedpur FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, but it wasn't enough to salvage the season or the coach's position. This marked Coyle's second tenure at Chennaiyin. He first took over during the 2019–20 season, guiding the club from the brink of elimination to a remarkable ISL final appearance. After returning in 2023, he once again made an immediate impact, steering Chennaiyin into the playoffs for the first time in four years. Widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in ISL history, the Scottish tactician previously won the ISL Shield with Jamshedpur FC and was celebrated for his ability to develop local talent, aligning well with Chennaiyin's vision of nurturing young Indian players. ISL 2025–26 Season on Hold Amid Uncertainty In a related development, the Indian Super League's 2025–26 season has been put on hold due to unresolved contractual issues between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). FSDL, a subsidiary of IMG Reliance and the ISL's official organizer, issued a letter to participating clubs stating it could not 'effectively plan, organise, or commercialise the 2025–26 ISL season" in the absence of a new agreement. The Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between FSDL and AIFF is set to expire on December 8, 2025, and negotiations for an extension have stalled, prompting the league to temporarily suspend planning activities for the upcoming season. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 17:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. MBSG is not just a club; this is our mother club: Dippendu Biswas

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 4 (ANI): Mohun Bagan Super Giant's (MBSG) Dippendu Biswas is living the dream that every young footballer aspires to, representing their favourite club at the highest level. But it's his hard work and dedication to the sport that have helped him turn that dream into reality. The 22-year-old from West Bengal had always imagined himself wearing the iconic Green and Maroon on the big stage, and now, he's doing just that. His raw talent was apparent early on, but he had to refine his professionalism to meet the demands of the Indian Super League (ISL). Biswas made his debut in the 2023-24 ISL season, featuring in five matches as Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured their first-ever ISL Shield. He built on that promise in the following campaign, making 14 appearances, contributing to five clean sheets, scoring once, and providing two assists. Versatile and composed, he slotted in both at centre-back and right-back, playing a key part in the club's march to the ISL double. 'It felt amazing to become champions with MBSG. It is truly one of the best clubs in India, and the fanbase is absolutely crazy. I'm genuinely grateful to be a part of this club,' Biswas shared in a conversation with MBSG TV. The defender shared how he went from the reserves to earning a place in the MBSG first team and later getting called up to the Indian U-23 squad for two exposure friendlies in June. Biswas said it was his determination that helped him reach this stage. 'I played in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and then got into the MBSG reserves team. I always had this strong determination that I have to play better and get a chance in the Indian team. That motivation kept me going. When I joined the team for the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL), the coaches told me, 'If you perform well here, you'll get a chance to move up to the senior team.' And that's exactly what happened,' he added. Biswas has been a Mariner ever since and has completed the epic full circle, from being a fan to becoming a player for the club. He recalled going to the stadium with his friends and cheering for the team, never imagining he would one day wear the same jersey on the pitch. 'As a fan, I had watched many matches at the Mohun Bagan ground. I used to support the club and felt great when they won. I would watch the fans cheering loudly and now, I'm playing for the very club I once supported. It feels amazing. I never imagined I'd make it to the MBSG senior team. It's a matter of pride for me,' he shared. This season was even more special for him, as he got to celebrate the ISL Cup with his parents on the pitch, something which remained unfulfilled in the 2023-24 campaign when they lost the final to Mumbai City FC. 'Having my parents beside me in the final made it extra special. Last time they came, we lost the final. But this time, we did it and it felt really good,' Biswas spoke with pride. Biswas has enjoyed a successful start to his senior career, but he believes there's always more to strive for, as one should never settle for what has already been achieved. His next goal would be to keep pushing himself and unlock his full potential. 'It's important to honour the jersey we wear and give our all to help the team become champions (again). This is not just a club; this is our mother club. You must've heard it from the fans, and the same goes for me,' he commented. (ANI)

Jordan Murray departs from Jamshedpur FC

Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) [India], June 30 (ANI): Australian striker Jordan Murray has officially parted ways with Jamshedpur FC, according to the Indian Super League (ISL) website. Murray returned to the Men of Steel ahead of the 2024-25 campaign for his second stint, having previously represented the club during the 2021-22 season, when Jamshedpur FC clinched the ISL Shield under Owen Coyle. Murray's familiarity with the league and experience were trusted by head coach Khalid Jamil, and the Aussie forward delivered once again. The official X handle of Jamshedpur FC posted, 'Farewell, Jordan Murray! We're forever grateful for the incredible contributions of Jordan Murray to the Men of Steel! Your impact on Jamshedpur football will always be remembered. Wishing you a bright future ahead, Jordan! You will be missed!' In the 2024-25 season, he made 23 appearances, scoring six goals, including crucial late strikes against FC Goa and Bengaluru FC. Beyond his goals, Murray was a workhorse up front, excelling in hold-up play, movement in the final third, and off-the-ball effort, all of which perfectly suited Jamil's high-energy system. He also won 113 duels, made 46 recoveries, created 19 chances, and delivered 19 key passes, underlining his all-round impact in Jamshedpur FC's impressive run to the ISL semi-finals. Murray was also instrumental in the club's journey to the Kalinga Super Cup final last season. (ANI)

Tom Aldred signs one-year contract extension with Mohun Bagan Super Giant

New Delhi [India], May 12 (ANI): Mohun Bagan Super Giant centre-back Tom Aldred has signed a fresh one-year contract with the Mariners, the Indian Super League (ISL) club announced on Saturday. The new deal will see the defender don the Green and Maroons till the end of the 2025-26 season, as per the ISL official website. Aldred, who joined the Mariners from A-League outfit Brisbane Roar ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, quickly became a fan favourite. The 34-year-old played a crucial role in the heart of defence during a memorable season for the Kolkata-based side. Under the leadership of head coach Jose Molina, MBSG retained the ISL Shield and clinched the ISL Cup with a victory over Bengaluru FC in the final, becoming only the second team in ISL history to achieve the double. The Mariners also finished as runners-up in the Durand Cup. Aldred made 32 appearances across all competitions and, aside from his defensive solidity, also contributed in attack, mostly from set-piece situations, with three goals and one assist. With his future now secured, the experienced defender will aim to build on this strong season and lead from the back once again in 2025-26. Earlier, Mohun Bagan Super Giant last featured in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, where FC Goa put them to the sword, beating them 3-1 to progress to the final of the competition. Goals from Brison Fernandes (20'), Iker Guarrotxena (51' penalty), and Borja Herrera (58') sealed a comfortable victory for Manolo Marquez's side over Bastab Roy's young guns. (ANI)

FC Goa crowned Kalinga Super Cup champions after 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC

Bhubaneswar: It was a fairytale end to coach Manolo Marquez's tenure at FC Goa as his men bid him adieu with the perfect parting gift by clinching the Kalinga Super Cup with a dominant 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC here on Saturday. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. While the trophy presentation was conducted indoors after a sudden cyclonic storm and rains affected a proper ceremony in front of its supporters, it could not dampen FC Goa's celebrations following their brilliant performance at Kalinga Stadium. Wearing black armbands in tribute to the victims of Lairai Devi Temple in Goa, the Gaurs took the wind away from under Jamshedpur players' feet as Borja Herrera, who was adjudged the player of the match, scored a brace (23', 51') followed by another strike from Dejan Drazic (72') earned them their first trophy since the 2021 Durand Cup. As for Khalid Jamil and his Red Miners, it was heartbreak for them as they conceded three goals and a defeat having not conceded a single of them in this edition before the final. It was a speedy start to the match with both teams pressing high from the word-go and trying to build the momentum for that all-important breakthrough. For Jamshedpur, Rei Tachikawa went for a long shot in the first minute itself and captain Javi Hernandez then darted into the box from the left for a shot that was well saved by young Goa custodian Hrithik Tiwari in the second minute. Goa, however, began growing into the game soon after with Herrera and Aakash Sangwan looking to control the game from the left and right flanks respectively. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now And Marquez and his men did not have to wait long for the opener as a brilliant through from the middle by Drazic reached Sangwan on the left wing while deceiving Ashutosh Mehta outside the box. The youngster shot the ball low to the left of Albino Gomes, who had no option but to parry it near an onrushing Herrera, who shot the rebound only for Stephen Eze to block. However, there was no stopping the Spaniard on the second rebound as he made no mistake in shooting it higher and into the left of the goal. The breakthrough only made Goa more dominant even as Jamshedpur tried their best to get back into the game. Their best chance of the half came in the 43rd minute from a corner kick that almost hit the outstretched hand of Sandesh Jhingan in front of the goal Instead, Lazar Cirkovic's header hit the woodwork. All plans and strategies that Jamil might have discussed during the break came to naught soon after the change of end as Gomes, who had kept three clean sheets in the tournament so far, was beaten by a screamer out of nowhere from Herrera, who had made a run from the midfield. It was Herrera's fourth goal of the Super Cup as he levelled with teammate Iker Guarrotxena as the topscorer while taking the match away from Jamshedpur. However, to the further disappointment of the Red Miners fans, who had long been their No. 12 of the final with their cheers, it was Drazic who sealed the match and the trophy for his team by receiving a long through from Carl McHugh and going around Gomes to confidently put the ball into the net and the Red Miners' dreams of a trophy into dust.
