C*A*U*G*H*T, review: tiring hostage comedy tries to hit too many targets
Shall we start with the title? C*A*U*G*H*T (ITVX) begs for attention through the medium of capitals and asterisks. Imagine if everyone made their show look like a finicky password. S/T\R/I!C\T/L\Y. ?QUESTION? ?TIME?. B@K£ ŒUF. It would get irritating in a heartbeat. C*A*U*G*H*T doesn't require typography to achieve that outcome. Originally scheduled to air in October 2023, but postponed in the wake of the October 7 attack, this is that trickiest of balancing acts: a no-holds-barred comedy about soldiers being taken hostage by the terrorist rebels of a small unrecognised nation. There are d--k pics and SMGs, cold-blooded slaughter and a man sucking out a bullet amusingly lodged in his wounded pal's anus. On the drawing board, the script no doubt throbbed and swaggered with hilarity. Most of the action is set on a tropical island of Behati-Prinsloo where four Aussie soldiers have been dropped on a black ops mission to wipe the phone of the island's princess. They are soon captured by indeterminately Asian freedom fighters and pleading for their lives. 'Killing Australian could be a public relations disaster for us,' reasons a rebel. 'Everybody loves Australians. Nobody knows why.' A geopolitical incident is soon the talk of the international airwaves. The joke is that the soldiers, seemingly in danger, really collaborate with their captors by making a fake hostage video. Then the US gets involved, rendering this a most strange Australian-American hybrid. Almost every male Aussie here – soldier, politician, broadcaster – is some form of idiot. The female characters are all feistier and, of necessity in this patriarchy of plonkers, cannier. The US is mainly represented by Sean Penn playing Sean Penn as a narcissistic bully who gets caught up in the hostages' story. It's an arms race of self-parody. In all this random oddness, there's even a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo for Susan Sarandon. Penn does deliver one extremely funny punchline about Madonna, to whom, once upon a time, he was married. But you have to slog through to the end of the fifth episode for this reward. And it jostles for attention in a dense thicket of chuck-in-anything, broad-brushstroke satire on masculinity, ethnicity, diplomacy, celebrity, news media, action movies, plus a whole anthology of Aussie in-jokes about a murderous dingo and a murdered koala, 'The Shark', 'The Thorpedo' and the defensible merits of early Mel Gibson. As for the plot, it hops along in six half-hour increments. Interest in the four hostages, as they once again barter to save their skins, wanes long before their fate is revealed. As the scriptwriters might put it, it's all ****.

Emmerdale's Michelle Hardwick wants Corrie favourite to be Vanessa's lost sister
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The recent news that Emmerdale and Coronation Street are set to collaborate in a never-been-done-before crossover episode was one of the major talking points on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards this evening. Of course, having already compiled a list of the character interactions I'm most keen to see, I wanted to know what the cast members themselves had to say. While most of the stars I chatted to enthusiastically gave me a name or two of who they'd like to share the screen with, Vanessa Woodfield actress Michelle Hardwick came prepared with an entire storyline! 'Okay, it's got to be with DS Swain,' she told me with very little hesitation. Fans have often picked up on the similarities between Vanessa and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), pointing out that they dress almost exactly the same – something that hasn't gone unnoticed by the actors themselves. 'I think there's possibly some long-lost sister thing going on or something. There'd have to be some history there, definitely! Because we even dress the same! We can't deny it, we do. It's not us. It's the costume department. 'We do laugh about it. Me and Vicky will DM each other or message each other and I'll be like 'Literally, we're wearing the same thing tonight in this episode'. It's dead funny.' Amazingly, when I asked Vicky the same question earlier in the evening, she was very much on the same page. 'Maybe Michelle. They both have a similar style, with the shirt and the vest,' she said. With the crossover episode set to launch storylines that will have on-going repercussions in both soaps, could Michelle be onto something? Could we be set to get the first cross-soap family? More Trending It is clear that Vicky and Michelle get on well, and despite the fact that they're both the captains of the rival soap netball teams, Michelle assured me that the rivalry stays on the pitch. Court? I write about soaps, I don't know. 'We were stood having drinks earlier together. It's just gorgeous. I love all the Corrie cast as much as I love the Emmerdale cast. View More » 'And because my wife's their producer, I do know them, through the netball but also now through Kate as well. They're a gorgeous bunch over there.' Corrie star Vicky Myers reveals 'really happy' future for Carla and Lisa
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Carla Connor (Alison King) and Lisa Swain's (Vicky Myers) romance has taken Coronation Street fans by storm, garnering a cult following across the globe. 'It's brilliant, isn't it?' Vicky Myers enthused to me when I caught up with her at the British Soap Awards. 'And it's testament to [the fans] that they've invested in us and they've obviously seen something in us that they can relate to, that they feel.' In their relatively short relationship, Carla and Lisa have faced plenty of challenges, have already 'u-hauled' and have one botched proposal under their belts. From kidnappings to kidney failure, murder to shootings, they've been through more in the past few months than anyone would hope to experience in a lifetime. However, Vicky assured me that there are some 'really happy' times ahead, among some more struggles. 'There is a lot coming, but there's also periods of time that they're really happy, and there's periods of time when it's not going so well, but that's indicative of any relationship, isn't it? And any family life. And living together in the small flat… Let's see how they navigate all of that!' That family life is something we reflected on closely during our chat. 'It is refreshing,' Vicky said, of seeing a family with two mums on-screen. 'And I think all the feelings that are involved in it and navigating that, and then coupled with the grief that Lisa and Betsy are feeling, and Carla understanding that. More Trending 'It's a completely different relationship that Carla has had. I don't want to speak on behalf of Ali but we do talk about it. And long may it continue!' And of course, we couldn't leave out that recent suggestion of an Ibiza wedding, which Vicky is very keen for! View More » 'Wouldn't that be great? Everyone pack your bags and let's get to Ibiza!'
