Horror moment Royal Caribbean cruise ship passenger topples over edge of pool

A Caribbean cruise passenger accidentally fell over the edge of an infinity pool while dangerously reaching over to pick up his sunglasses, and the shocking incident was caught on camera A passenger on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship fell over the edge of an infinity pool on the 15th deck as they reached for their sunglasses. ‌ Cringe-worthy footage reveals the moment a holidaymaker was leaning against the barrier of a pool before quickly losing control of their balance and plummeting down to a lower deck on the Icon of the Seas ship. It looks as though the man was trying to reach out over to grab something, which was later revealed to be his beloved pair of sunglasses. ‌ Moments before losing his balance, hanging on the edge, he straightened his legs and came tumbling down. Despite a mighty fall, somehow the man did not sustain any injuries, as reported by the account that posted the surprising video online. ‌ According to the Daily Mail, the pool area from which he fell is located on deck 15, and sitting directly below it is the children's Splashaway Bay play area on deck seven. Social media users couldn't believe their eyes at the video and this passenger's irresponsible attempt that put not only his health but also his life at risk. One user claimed to have witnessed the incident for themselves and was quick to defend him, saying: "He fell into a space not open to the public. If he had fallen over the railing, he would have fallen to deck five in the kids splash area. That's 10 decks below." They added: "He was confined to his room after the incident and not let out until arriving back in Miami." ‌ Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has released a statement about the viral moment. "A guest accidentally fell onto the pool gutter after reaching over to retrieve their sunglasses," they explained. "Our crew immediately attended to the guest, and fortunately, the guest did not experience any injuries." ‌ It's ironic that the passenger would happen to fall over the world's largest cruise ship, standing at an impressive 1,196 ft long and 219 ft wide. The ship is made up of 20 decks and employs over 2,000 international crew members, one of whom experienced a fatal incident just days before the infinity pool fall. It turns out a crew member on that very same ship had reportedly stabbed a fellow female co-worker before jumping overboard to his death. The Royal Bahamas Police Force told NBC News that the man stabbed his colleague repeatedly around 7.30pm on Thursday night. Both crew members were working on the luxury cruise when it's thought that a "personal dispute" erupted on board. What is believed to be his body was recovered from the water just minutes after he allegedly attacked the 28-year-old woman. In a state of panic, unaware of the situation, many passengers tried to save the man overboard by throwing him life rings. Although, just 30 minutes after the stabbing took place, he was found dead by the onboard medical team.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Passenger Falls Over Edge of Infinity Pool

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A viral video caught the moment a cruise ship passenger fell over the edge of an infinity pool, hit a railing, and bounced back to land on a narrow strip of guttering. Footage showed the swimmer leaning extremely far over the glass edge before losing balance and toppling onto the pool's guttering below. Had the person fallen over the gutter itself, they would have plummeted several stories to a children's swimming area on a much lower deck. However, the passenger was unharmed, and the Icon of the Seas ship, which is owned by Royal Caribbean, returned as scheduled from a trip to the Bahamas to its home port of Miami, Florida. Why It Matters The near miss at the infinity pool is likely to raise fresh safety fears among passengers and spark security discussions between the cruise liner's bosses. It's also a fresh PR blow for Royal Caribbean, as the clip was shared just days after the same ship saw an onboard stabbing and an overboard fatality. The female staff member was repeatedly stabbed, allegedly by a male co-worker, who then plunged over the side of the ship to his death. The woman was hospitalized and said to be in a stable condition after the attack on Thursday. Another of the company's cruise ships, Navigator of the Seas, was a hit with a sickness outbreak that saw 140 people fall ill earlier this month. What To Know Now, footage of the fall at the infinity pool has gone viral after it was shared by the popular Instagram account @onlyinflorida, where it was viewed tens of thousands of times. Almost 66,000 viewers had liked the video within just one day of it being posted online. The video shows a passenger leaning over the side of the ship's infinity pool. They dangle precipitously over the glass edge of the pool, with only their legs and feet visible, raised clear of the water. The swimmer, who was trying to retrieve their fallen sunglasses, waves a hand in the air behind them before losing their balance and tipping forward over the edge of the pool in a front flip. Their whole body rotates, and their back appears to hit the safety railing on the narrow strip of the pool's gutter below. They then bounce back to safety by landing on the guttering itself. There are several conflicting accounts of the incident. Some media outlets, such as People, describe the swimmer as a man, while others, such as report that it was a woman who fell. Mail Online quoted an unnamed guest who said that the swimmer was subsequently "confined to his room" until the ship docked in Miami. It is also unclear exactly when and where in the voyage the incident took place. Newsweek reached out to Royal Caribbean for clarification, but the company responded with a statement only confirming that the incident took place. A passenger fell over the edge of the infinity pool located on Deck 15 onto the deck below. No other injuries were reported. The 'Icon of the Seas' returned back to its home port in Miami, Florida after the two incidents occured this week." A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement: "A guest accidentally fell onto the pool gutter after reaching over to retrieve their sunglasses. Our crew immediately attended to the guest and fortunately the guest did not experience any injuries." What Happens Next The video shows no sign of slowing down its viral spread as it continues to be shared by viewers online this week.

Another South African woman brutally attacked at sea

Just weeks after the emotional outpouring of grief following the murder of South African yacht stewardess Paige Bell, another South African woman has been brutally attacked at sea – this time aboard a cruise ship in the Bahamas, while her attacker, also South African, hurled himself overboard. The Witness reports that the 28-year-old woman, working as a crew member aboard the Icon of the Seas, was stabbed multiple times, allegedly by a 35-year-old male colleague, while the ship sailed through Bahamian waters last week. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the attack took place at around 19:30 last Thursday. The suspect allegedly stabbed the woman several times in the upper body during what police described as a 'personal dispute' before attempting to flee the scene by jumping overboard. The man was later found unresponsive and declared dead by onboard medical personnel. The victim, whose identity has not been released, is reportedly in stable condition. Royal Caribbean said in a statement that the crew initiated a search and rescue operation immediately after a man-overboard alert, signalled onboard as 'Oscar Oscar Oscar', was issued. The ship slowed and turned back to recover the man, but he could not be saved. The company said in a statement: 'Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the crew member [who went overboard] passed away.' The Icon of the Seas was returning to Miami following stops in St. Maarten, the US Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. The ship had departed from Miami on July 19. The incident comes as South Africa continues to mourn the death of Paige Bell, a former Hillcrest High School pupil who was killed days before her 21st birthday. Her body was discovered in the engine room of a superyacht docked in the Bahamas on July 3. A 39-year-old Mexican man, also a crew member, was arrested in connection with her death. Sandra Jordaan of The Yacht Purser programme said the cruise ship incident underscored the maritime industry's persistent failure to protect workers. Long hours, isolation, high stress and a lack of accountability contribute to unsafe environments at sea. She added that calls for mandatory criminal background checks for crew had yet to be implemented across the industry. 'These are not isolated incidents,' said Jordaan. 'Until proper safety protocols are implemented, we will continue to see crew members harmed, or worse, while working in environments that too often treat them as disposable.' Bell's death sparked renewed calls for tighter regulation in the yachting sector, especially regarding background checks for crew. Many young South Africans join the maritime sector in pursuit of travel and opportunity, often entering the loosely regulated yachting industry. Jessie Frost, a former yachtie and founder of the recruitment platform Crewfolio, has been campaigning for global reform. She launched a petition on calling for mandatory and renewable criminal background checks for all seafarers. She said that although international maritime frameworks such as the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the International Labour Organisation's Maritime Labour Convention provide guidance on training and safety, they do not require background checks. Crew continue to be placed in high-risk environments without even the most basic criminal background screening. Frost is proposing a renewable two-year certificate from a global screening provider, like existing requirements such as the ENG1 medical or STCW certification. 'There are repeat offenders in our industry who are known and named, yet they continue to find work because there's always someone unaware of their past who unknowingly gives them another opportunity,' she said. Themes of bullying, harassment, sexual and physical violence, theft and even murder surface year after year, often quietly accepted, normalised or brushed aside. Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said they could not comment, as the matter remained under investigation by Bahamian authorities. The Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, made its maiden voyage in January 2024. The 360m-long vessel boasts seven pools, the 'world's largest waterpark at sea', six waterslides and nine whirlpools, and can carry up to 5 610 passengers and 2 350 crew members across 19 floors.
