England vs Senegal prediction: Three Lions to end international break with a win
England vs Senegal betting tips England take on Senegal in a friendly at the City Ground on Tuesday, as Thomas Tuchel's side look to improve on a disappointing performance against Andorra last time out. The Three Lions' 1-0 win over the team ranked 173rd in the world provoked plenty of questions after an insipid display despite fielding a strong team, and Tuchel will be hoping for a statement win this week as his World Cup preparations continue. England face a Senegal side that drew with Republic of Ireland last week, with the Lions of Teranga well-placed in their own World Cup qualifying group while also preparing for the 2025/26 African Cup of Nations. And Pape Thiaw's side won't be an easy opponent for England, with several top quality players including Iliman Ndiaye, Idrissa Gueye, Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Jackson. Nevertheless, the Three Lions are the strong favourites, with football betting sites pricing them at 9/20 to win versus 10/3 for a draw and 6/1 for a Senegal victory. England vs Senegal betting tips A disappointing display from Thomas Tuchel's side at the weekend does not stop England being touted as heavy favourites for this one, with the Three Lions having won all of their last five matches with a combined aggregate score of 14-0. While it didn't quite click in attack against Andorra, Senegal are less likely to completely sit back than Andorra, with Tuchel expected to experiment again at the City Ground. As for Senegal, they have won just two of their last five matches – against Liberia and Togo – and drew 1-1 with Ireland last Friday, though they have kept clean sheets in three of their last five. Recent draws to Sudan, Liberia and Ireland show that the Lions of Teranga can be weak at the back at times though, and their attack may struggle against a more stern England defence. As such, we're going for England to win to nil, which is offered by most betting sites at around 11/8. England vs Senegal prediction Many were surprised when former Brentford striker Ivan Toney was called up to Thomas Tuchel's squad, with the 29-year-old having plied his trade with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli since last summer. However, the striker has impressed during his time abroad and certainly brings a different dimension to the England attack, as shown at various points including during Euro 2024. With Kane having scored against Andorra and this match being a friendly, Toney could well be given a chance to lead the line as he aims to play his way into Tuchel's thinking ahead of the World Cup next year. Toney has 23 goals in 30 appearances for Al-Ahli this term, including four goals in the final five matches of the season, and he ended the season as an AFC Champions League Elite winner too. As well as having hit some form in the final few matches of the season, he'll be desperate to impress England's new manager as he returns to the country, and we think he'll have ample opportunity to do so. With that in mind, a wager on Ivan Toney to score anytime could offer value at 23/20 with William Hill. Senegal lined up to provide Ireland a strong test
History will be made this month when the British and Irish Lions play in Ireland for the first time. But for once, the FAI are one step ahead of their rugby equivalents having conducted a tour of their own playing countries whose nickname incorporates the lions. This tour continues on Friday when Ireland welcome Senegal (The Lions of Teranga, meaning hospitable) to the Aviva Stadium before concluding next Tuesday away to Luxembourg (The Red Lions). Early tour results were so poor that in March Ireland had to defeat Bulgaria (The Lions) in a relegation playoff to avoid demotion to Nations League C. This was necessitated by heavy defeats both home and away to England (The Three Lions). Just to rub it in, the England Women's team (The Lionesses) recently completed their own double over our Girls in Green. After facing Ireland the Lions of Teranga will travel immediately to Nottingham to play The Three Lions to conclusively determine who really is The Lion King of international football. This will be the first time the Boys in Green have played Senegal, but two visitors are making a quick return to Ireland. In July 2024 the Everton team that drew 3-3 with Sligo Rovers before a packed Showgrounds in the 'Séamus Coleman Derby' included both Idrissa Gana Gueye and debutant Iliman Ndiaye. READ MORE In May, Ndiaye entered Toffees history by scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Southampton in Everton's final men's match at Goodison Park, their home for 133 years. Less happily, in January, Ndiaye became the first player to be booked for the hitherto unknown offence of impersonating a seagull as he celebrated his winning goal against Brighton. Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson celebrates finding the net for Chelsea against Real Betis in the Conference League final. Photograph: Rafal Oleksiewicz/PA Wire A number of Pape Thiaw's squad arrive with freshly minted winners medals in their luggage. Nicolas Jackson scored for Chelsea in their 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final. Two medal winners have recently generated 'Super Sarr' headlines. Ismaïla Sarr was a crucial part of the Crystal Palace team that secured their first major trophy by defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup. Days later, namesake Pape Sarr provided the assist for Brennan Johnson's goal for Spurs in their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League. When Sadio Mané requested not to be selected for the trip to Ireland, Senegal replaced him by calling up Mamadou Lamine Camara, who recently won the African Confederation Cup with his Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane. But the long-term replacement for Mané is expected to be Amara Diouf, who in August 2023 made his senior debut for Senegal against Rwanda aged 15 years and 94 days. Diouf rose to prominence aged just 14 when he helped Senegal win the 2023 under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing as the competition's top scorer. Senegal have consistently supplied some of the Premier League's best players – not to mention its greatest hoax. In November 1996, Southampton manager Graeme Souness received a telephone call from a man purporting to be George Weah recommending he sign his cousin, Senegalese striker Ali Dia. It always seemed odd to imagine Weah cold-calling relegation-threatened clubs to see if they wanted to sign random relatives. After all, Weah was a Ballon d'Or winner on a career trajectory that would see him serve as president of his country. Senegalese players celebrate after Pape Bouba Diop scores what turned out to be the only goal of the game against France at the 2022 World Cup. Photograph: Jacques Demarthon/AFP via Getty Images Perhaps, more pertinently, that country was Liberia and not Senegal. Signed on a short-term deal Dia was introduced as a replacement for the injured Matt Le Tissier in a league game against Leeds United before being himself substituted. An unimpressed Le Tisser recalled that Dia 'ran around the pitch like Bambi on ice. It was very embarrassing to watch'. This single appearance did at least enable Dia to win one football competition, finishing top of one newspaper's list of 'The 50 Worst Footballers". Like Ireland, Senegal have qualified for the World Cup three times, with their first appearance remaining their most successful. In 2002, Senegal made the greatest World Cup debut in history, defeating reigning champions France 1-0 in the tournament's opening match. There were memorable scenes following Papa Bouba Diop's winner as the team danced around a shirt in celebration. They went on to become only the second African team to reach the quarter-finals. When they returned to the World Cup in 2018, Senegal made less welcome history as the first team ever to be eliminated on a 'fair-play' tiebreaker. Having finished the group stage with an identical record to Japan, they were ousted on the grounds of having received more yellow cards (six to four). To make matters worse, two of Senegal's six bookings had been received in injury time of their clash with Japan. One Senegal-born international who has won the World Cup is Patrick Vieira, a fact highlighted by Roy Keane during their infamous prematch confrontation in the Highbury tunnel. Having read in the match programme about the good works Vieira was funding in the country of his birth, Keane less than charitably inquired 'If you love Senegal so much why don't you play for them?'. Senegal are captained by Kalidou Koulibaly, considered such a man mountain at centre half that his nickname is 'K2″. Koulibaly was captain when Senegal won the African Cup of Nations for the only time in 2021 and plays for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, where international colleague and former Chelsea team-mate Édouard Mendy is goalkeeper for Al-Ahli. At Stamford Bridge Mendy became only the second player from Senegal (after Mané) to win the Champions League when Chelsea defeated Manchester City in the 2021 final.

Everton's player of the season: Idrissa Gueye – into autumn of his career and never better
A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to pick Everton's player of the season. At that stage, the answer seemed pretty straightforward. Despite the notable contributions of others, I felt midfielder Idrissa Gueye had done more than anyone else to hold the team together across the whole campaign. But the Senegal midfielder's name formulated so quickly in my mind that I then started to have doubts. Others had their own compelling case to make. Advertisement In his first season at Everton, forward Iliman Ndiaye hit double figures for goals. The 25-year-old is a bona fide entertainer, eliciting a sense of excitement whenever he embarks on one of his characteristic surges forward with the ball, in a squad that has not had enough of them in recent years. Success-starved supporters have craved some joy, and Ndiaye has belatedly provided it. Then there are the routinely excellent displays of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, without whom Everton would have almost certainly suffered the ignominy of dropping into the Championship by now. Shot stopping is not the only element of goalkeeping to consider, but the England No 1 has prevented a league-high six goals this season with his saves. Pickford has developed into a remarkably consistent presence who has a pleasing habit of elevating his game to another level when the side needs him most. After brief dalliances elsewhere though, I came back round to Gueye, or 'Gana' as he is affectionately known by team-mates, friends and fans. At 35, we all keep expecting him to slow down. That is a sad inevitability at some point, but it has not happened yet — if anything, he is arguably playing as well as ever. 'He's getting better the older he gets,' his midfield colleague James Garner, 24, said after the 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest last month. 'He's a calm, assuring head alongside me. I'm still pretty young and still learning the game, and he's helped me massively.' Gueye's influence on the Everton team is two-fold. There's the experience and reassurance he brings, as well as the sense of cohesion. An elder statesman in the squad and a French speaker, he is a popular bridge between different groups in the dressing room — as close to Ndiaye and Abdoulaye Doucoure as he is to someone like long-time club captain Seamus Coleman. On the pitch, he remains the team's engine; someone whose ball-winning prowess still ranks among the best in the league. In terms of the raw numbers, he is top of the league for tackles, joint-sixth for recoveries and also in the top 10 for interceptions. Stats like these should always be placed into context. Everton have had the 18th lowest possession share in the league, so Gueye and his team-mates are being asked to defend more. But even adjusting for opportunity (per 1,000 touches), the former Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is more than holding his own, as the below graphic shows. The 'true interceptions' metric considers blocked passes as well as interceptions. The formula for 'true tackles' is slightly more long-winded: tackles + challenges lost + fouls committed. In simple terms, Gueye is a prominent presence off the ball, performing a large volume of actions, and doing so with a high success rate. If there was a standout moment across the season as a whole, it was probably the 1-0 win away at Brighton & Hove Albion in January — a game in which Everton had spent the final five minutes plus stoppage time a player down due to Orel Mangala's injury. After withstanding wave after wave of pressure, it was telling that Gueye was the one team-mates and coaching staff first embraced on the full-time whistle. Advertisement During that match and other more turbulent moments of the season, the temptation was to wonder where Everton would have been without him. It almost certainly would not have been pretty. As he approaches the age of 36, and with his contract up this summer, the question at Everton has been how long he can keep going. Wherever he is playing his football, there will be an increasing focus on managing his minutes and his body. Even now, there are few doubts over his ability. 'Idrissa has done fantastically and he's surprised me a lot,' Everton manager David Moyes said last month. 'He's not a spring chicken and we're mindful of that. 'We've tried to rest him here and there, but he's done so well and kept playing. He's very good at breaking the play up and his experience is good. 'There's a certain group of players here who he's very helpful to and they see him as a top player and a gentleman as well. They rely on him a lot, but for me, he's done so well.' After a successful stint at PSG, Gueye rejoined Everton in the summer of 2022 keen to help steer the club through choppy waters. He has done that and more. He and his family have developed a deep-rooted connection to the club and the city. In a social media post from his wife Pauline after Goodison's final Premier League game, she spoke about their deep affection for the stadium and how they had 'built their family' on Merseyside. A post shared by Pauline Gueye (@paulinegueye_) As he approaches the twilight of his career, Gueye can rest assured that he has already cemented his legacy at Everton.

Mane to miss Senegal matches against Ireland and England
Sadio Mane will not play for Senegal in next month's internationals against the Republic of Ireland and England after asking to be excused for the two friendly matches. Mane is the only major absentee from a 26-man squad unveiled by coach Pape Thiaw on Tuesday. Advertisement "It's a personal decision that is his private business, and I respect that as a coach," Thiaw told a press conference. The 33-year-old Mane, who has won 111 caps for the west Africa country, has been subjected to criticism for his last performances for Senegal in March, where they drew with Sudan but beat Togo in World Cup qualifiers. Thiaw named one newcomer in midfielder Mamadou Lamine Camara, who won the African Confederation Cup on Sunday with his Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane. There are returns to the squad after missing the March qualifiers for seven players, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye from Everton. Senegal take on Ireland in the Aviva Stadium on June 6th and England in Nottingham on June 10th.
