Motor racing-Brown hails McLaren's 200th win as close to perfect
By Alan Baldwin HT Image BUDAPEST, Aug 3 (Reuters) - McLaren boss Zak Brown hailed the team's 200th Formula One win, with Lando Norris ahead of championship leader Oscar Piastri in a one-two finish in Hungary on Sunday, as close to perfect. The win was Norris's fifth of the season and McLaren's seventh one-two in 14 races as well as the team's fourth in a row. "You're never perfect in a race but I think that was as close to perfect as you can get," Brown told Sky Sports television. "The drivers were awesome, pit stops amazing, strategy was great to get Lando up there, Oscar drove brilliantly. I couldn't be prouder of this racing team." Norris and Piastri crossed the finish line 0.698 of a second apart, with the pair almost touching when the Australian tried to make a move on his British teammate on the penultimate lap and locked up. Team principal Andrea Stella said it had been 'firm' racing but also fair between rivals now separated by just nine points. "We had a bit of a lock-up with Oscar but at the same time Lando left some space because he knew that Oscar would have been at the limit of braking," said the Italian. "We keep being very proud of our Lando and Oscar for racing. I think this is a great way of honouring Formula One racing. These are the value of McLaren." Despite celebrating his ninth career win, Norris said he needed to improve because he was making life too hard for himself. He won from third on the grid, after dropping to fifth at the start and then making a one-stop strategy work with Piastri on two. "It's going to be a good and tough battle probably until the end. It takes a lot out of you trying to focus so much for every single session, race, everything. So, it's going be a long second half of the season, I'm sure," he said. "There are those things I need to improve on and want to improve on. I'm not giving myself the best opportunities. Even though the results have looked great, I'm not making my life very easy for myself at the minute. "So if I can work on those things, then I'll be in a better place." McLaren are only the second team to chalk up 200 grand prix wins since the world championship started in 1950. Ferrari, yet to win this season, are on 248. Mercedes, next after McLaren, have 130. Soccer-Brazil's tactical balance tested as Colombia rematch looms in Copa America final
By Janina Nuno Rios HT Image (Reuters) -Brazil have cruised into the Women's Copa America final with dominant scorelines and solid performances, but their biggest challenge awaits in Saturday's rematch against Colombia, a side determined to dethrone the defending champions. Arthur Elias's team has not leaned on star power to reach the final. Instead, Brazil's run has been defined by tactical balance: a disciplined backline, coordinated pressing, sharp execution on set pieces, and exploiting their opponent's defensive miscues. Their success is largely down to a core of new figures, such as Amanda Gutierres, who is the leading scorer for the team in the tournament with five goals and plays a central role in attack. Her brace in their semi-final win over Uruguay underscored her sharp positioning and composure in front of goal. "Hard work pays off," the Palmeiras striker said after the 5-1 victory. "Nothing is forced, everything happens at the right moment." Meanwhile, the experience of Marta continues to anchor the group. The veteran playmaker, who returned from international retirement for this tournament, was named MVP in the semi-final after a standout performance, assisting the opening goal and converting a penalty. Captain Marta's energy in Quito's altitude, along with her leadership and vision, has brought balance to a side still finding their rhythm. "We knew what to do when we had the ball, especially finding the passes between the lines," Marta said, also praising Brazil's defensive response after a shaky start to the second half. "(Goalkeeper) Claudia and the girls at the back sorted things out." While defensively solid with just two goals conceded in five matches, Brazil's intensity lapses have created openings that Colombia, led by Linda Caicedo and Mayra Ramirez, could punish. Their group-stage goalless draw saw Colombia dominate for 70 minutes after goalkeeper Lorena's red card, highlighting the fine margins the eight-time champions must control in the final. Brazil may not dazzle for 90 minutes, but their formula built on discipline, rotation and rising confidence has proved effective. Colombia represent their sternest test yet, but with a blend of energy and experience the reigning champions are positioned to complete their mission again. Wendy's replaces outgoing US president
This story was originally published on Restaurant Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Restaurant Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Wendy's has hired Pete Suerken for the role of president, U.S. on Tuesday, replacing Abigail Pringle, who is leaving the company effective Aug. 15, according to an 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Pringle is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities, according to a press release. She served as Wendy's U.S. president since June 2024, following more than two decades in various roles at the brand. Suerken joins Wendy's leadership at a moment of C-suite upheaval. CEO Kirk Tanner defected to Hershey earlier this month after a tenure of roughly 18 months. Tanner was replaced on an interim basis by CFO Ken Cook, a former UPS exec who has only been with the chain since December. Dive Insight: Suerken's appointment is an indication the brand is searching for stability. Despite technically being an outside hire, Suerken has extensive knowledge of Wendy's system. He served as president and CEO of its independent purchasing cooperative, Wendy's Quality Supply Chain Co-op, since 2021, according to the press release. In that position, Suerken led supply chain and distribution operations for Wendy's restaurants around the world. Suerken will focus on the chain's U.S. priorities, which include 'delivering exceptional customer experiences, increasing restaurant-level profitability and accelerating growth,' Cook said. Suerken also spent more than a decade at Yum Brands' purchasing co-op, Restaurant Supply Chain Solutions, according to the press release. Cook said Pringle 'has been a key leader of restaurant development at Wendy's, including our Image Activation journey and creation of the modern restaurant image for the brand. She transformed our International business and put a solid structure in place to optimize restaurant performance in the U.S.' The executive changes come at a difficult moment for the brand, and for QSRs overall. In October, Wendy's announced a plan to shutter about 140 underperforming restaurants, and the chain's same-store sales fell 2.8% in the U.S. in Q1. But that conceals a fairly steady performance for the chain. Wendy's has seen positive comps growth in seven of the last eight quarters — though that growth was often small — while McDonald's and Burger King both posted multiple negative quarters in the same timespan. And the chain is making tech changes to boost its speed of service and restrain labor costs by deploying drive-thru voice artificial intelligence at 500 restaurants this year. July 26 Perth form analysis of all eight Belmont races
RACE 7 (1) KING OF LIGHT was super on debut when settling last in running, following highly touted youngster Aberdeen Flyer into the home straight and then sprinting on past him in the home straight. It was the win of a nice horse and it is expected that he will safely take care of rivals to remain undefeated. (7) VATICAN STORM was in that same race and got into all sorts of bother in the home straight. Looked like he had something to offer if the gaps had appeared. (4) RADIANT LIGHT trialled well behind Twisted Steel and then was closing the margin late on Mardusa on debut. (10) MEDIA CLUB kept coming under pressure on debut. RACE 9 (10) SUPERNATURAL again steps up in grade but stays on the minimum. She is coming off a last-start Heavy victory and given the amount of rain that the metro area copped on Wednesday night/Thursday morning it is likely to be at least in the soft range come Saturday. These progressive fillies on the minimum are always hard to hold out and while this race has more depth, expect she will take beating. (3) COOL MEMORY sat outside Richanco first-up at 1,200m and returned a winner and second-up was squeezed out late in a 76+. This is a great race for him if he can roll to the top. (5) SUNNY HONEY has had no luck throughout the entirety of his preparation. He deserves to win one, he has been tough in defeat. (2) HELL I AM is building. RACE 11 (3) LUCKY I AM is just thriving on being ridden for pure speed and relishing the wet track conditions. Great opportunity for Chanel Cooper to open her Saturday winners' account with a jump-and-run horse with only 55.5kg on her back. (5) YORGA PRIDE was three-from-three undefeated leading into the WA Breeders when beaten under 3L by London's Image at Bunbury. Was immediately tipped out for a spell and now returns off the back of a strong trial. She has got gears. (8) SNOW GOD was heavily commissioned at stages in betting last week and ran really well, however, he is again dealt a tough barrier/map. (2) GOD'S GATE beat the older horses impressively last start. RACE 13 (6) FANCY RED won the Belmont Oaks. (1) ARCADIA PARK won the Aquanita Stakes. Which race is the stronger form reference? There is no doubt going into the race that the boys' division had more depth (Our Paladin Al, Elite Missile, Redback Flyer) but there was something to like about the way that Fancy Red sat back, cut her way through the conditions and the traffic and burst clear late. Going to go with the filly. Arcadia Park is drawn barrier 1 in a race without much speed. It remains to be seen if he leads or box-seats on (2) LANO, who is up in grade but is bred to stay. (8) LILLIAN did a stack of work in the Oaks. RACE 14 (Best Bet) (2) FAMOUS DAIN just could not quite reel in Lano last start in a 60+ Graduation over 1,690m at Bunbury on a Heavy track. He is "up in grade" but this race may not have any additional depth to it, and yet he drops 2.5kg and gains the services of William Pike. Drawn to stalk a solid tempo and should be given every possible. (7) ARCADIA KNIGHT was a last-to-first winner on a Heavy at Pinjarra and then never got into the contest second-up. (4) STYLISH LORD is a model of consistency but does seem to find it hard to win races. (1) KISSES FROM KELLY does his best work at Belmont and was not disgraced first-up in a 72+. RACE 16 (9) WANT A WINNER suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Desert Whisper last start. He is back out to 1,200m and considering that filly nearly pinched a 72+ last week at Bunbury, there is no issue with the form. He should bounce out and take cover on the speed that comes across from out deep and all of a sudden he is likely to be nearly each-way. (13) ESSENTRIC NATURE burst onto the scene with a brilliant first-up C3 1,100m win at Bunbury and trialled well at Lark Hill. Nice type. (10) OBJECTIFY can mix her form but her best is good enough to win this. (11) HORCRUX is better ridden for speed. Without Pike he will balloon in price. RACE 18 (1) MASAMUNE deserves to win another this prep. Was no better than three deep the trip behind En Plein Air three back. Got a squeeze out and had genuine excuses two back and last start, was the only horse to make ground behind high-speed filly Desert Whisper. (14) KARNUP QUEEN was seriously stiff last week at Bunbury. She ran fourth beaten nearly 2L but watching the replay it is easy to sell yourself that with clear galloping room, she nearly wins that event. Great placement on the seven-day back-up. (6) TRUE APOSTLE lumped 59.5kg first-up and peaked late. (4) SOLDANELLE is a hard mare to catch but Stefan Vahala has now figured her out: She is best fresh and she does not stay. RACE 20 (13) SURF PATROL is knocking on the door and looks to strike a very winnable race on the seven-day back-up. Closed off well behind Fancy Red in a C3 1,400 (she has since won a 60+ Grad, Belmont Oaks and likely jumps favourite in the Belmont Classic), finished half-a-length off Simply Thinkin' and gets a 1.5kg weight swing and then last week ran third in a 3-year-old Plate behind Timeless Gem. All stacks up. (11) ANTIQUE STAR was held up the entire last week and looked to be bolting. (1) SIMPLY THINKIN' is a mare in form and is versatile. (14) MY JIMMY trialled like the horse of old. Hopefully he can show it on race day. Comments courtesy of Racing WA
