Zuma demands Ramaphosa resign by Friday or face court showdown
Zuma's lawyers call for Ramaphosa's resignation over alleged constitutional breaches. Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspaper Former President Jacob Zuma's legal team has issued a scathing letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding answers over recent executive decisions, the withdrawal of several key announcements, and his immediate resignation for allegedly breaching the Constitution. In a sharply worded statement, KMNS Inc. Attorneys, acting for Zuma, accuse Ramaphosa of 'increasingly obscure' and 'unconstitutional' conduct relating to high-level government appointments and an ongoing judicial inquiry. The attorneys fired questions aimed at exposing the rationale behind recent decisions, particularly the suspension of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, the appointment of Professor Firoz Cachalia as Acting Minister of Police, and the formation of a commission chaired by the Acting Deputy Chief Justice to investigate alleged corruption in the judiciary. Mchunu was suspended and placed on leave with immediate effect on July 13, 2025, awaiting a judicial commission of investigation into claims of corruption and political influence in South Africa's policing agencies. "Your conduct is not in the interests of the people of South Africa and future generations," said the attorneys. "Where in our law do you, as president, derive the power to delegate the proposed Judicial Commission of Inquiry the power to investigate allegations of misconduct and/or criminal conduct on the part of any member or members of the Judiciary?" The attorneys also took issue with the cost to the public. "What are the estimated costs to the taxpayers for the failure to act in a similar or consistent manner?" They made three direct demands to Ramaphosa: -Withdraw the announcements made on July 13 and 31 regarding Cabinet reshuffles. -Reverse the swearing-in of Professor Cachalia. -Resign immediately for 'repeatedly violating your oath of office'. The legal team warned that failure to meet their deadline of 10 am Friday, August 8, will result in urgent court action. Video Player is loading. "Frankly, I do not believe this latest call for the president's resignation will succeed. It appears to be more of a political manoeuvre than a matter of substantive concern," added Neethling. "The focus seems to be on undermining the person of President Ramaphosa rather than on strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountable governance." The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party also formally presented a letter of demand to the president, requesting that he resign from office by 9 am on Friday, July 18. "Should Ramaphosa fail to heed this call, the MK party will pursue a range of lawful and peaceful actions, including constitutional litigation, a motion of no confidence in Parliament and rolling mass action nationwide," said the party's national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela. Zuma's visit to Morocco described as 'betrayal' of the Western Sahara
Former president Jacob Zuma's Morocco visit sparks controversy over Western Sahara Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspaper Former South African President Jacob Zuma's recent visit to Morocco has ignited controversy and divided opinions, with some describing it as a 'betrayal' of the Western Sahara. The visit, which occurred quietly on July 15th, was brought to light through social media posts from Moroccan officials and was confirmed by Youssef Amrani, Moroccan ambassador to the United States, who posted on X. During his visit, Zuma was photographed alongside the MK Party's Head of Presidency, Magasela Mzobe, and Moroccan officials, with both South African and Moroccan flags displayed. The visit has been interpreted as a significant shift, particularly in relation to the Western Sahara conflict. Critics argue that Zuma's support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara marks a betrayal of the African Union's (AU) long-standing position advocating for Sahrawi self-determination. Floyd Shivambu, former Secretary General of the MK Party, responded sharply, describing Zuma's recognition of Moroccan sovereignty as 'opportunistic' and a departure from the anti-colonial and revolutionary principles that underpin many liberation movements on the continent. 'This move contradicts our history of supporting oppressed peoples,' Shivambu said in a social media post. The controversy deepened when Fikile Mbalula, the ANC's secretary general, publicly called Zuma a 'sellout' during a televised interview and reiterated his disapproval on social media. Next Stay Close ✕ The Pan African Forum Ltd & Associates chair, Dr. David Nyekorach-Matsanga, issued a formal condemnation on Sunday, describing Zuma's stance as a 'betrayal of African solidarity' and a violation of the AU's principles. 'Endorsing this occupation equates to endorsing colonialism,' read the statement.. 'It dishonours the legacy of the late Muammar Gaddafi, a key defender of the Sahrawi cause, which is a recognized member state of the African Union, and its right to self-determination is protected under Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.' He stated that Morocco's continued occupation of Western Sahara is a breach of international law and AU principles. 'Zuma's personal or party-level position does not override the AU's position nor reflect the will of South Africans. From Libya to now, Zuma's history shows a pattern of trading principles for favour. 'The AU Commission must reaffirm its official position on Western Sahara. The ANC must publicly distance itself from Zuma's stance. Pan-African organisations, civil society, and student movements must reject this betrayal,' read the statement. In response, Dr Magasela Mzobe, head of the presidency in the MK Party, said nothing stops Jacob Zuma from visiting other African countries. 'President Zuma and the MKP officials will soon take MK members and supporters into confidence about this historic visit to Morocco. We don't owe the ANC, DA, or any organisation answers but MKP members. The ANC doesn't speak on behalf of SA on international matters.' Meanwhile, Zuma's previous support for the Sahrawi cause as President of South Africa was well-documented, including meetings with Sahrawi leader Brahim Ghali. Critics now question whether this visit signals a significant policy shift within the MK party or a personal diplomatic move. Political analyst Joe Mhlanga expressed concern about the internal discord within the MK Party, highlighting ongoing internal struggles and leadership issues. 'The party appears to lack a clear direction; this flip-flopping on key issues like Western Sahara undermines their credibility and raises questions about their stance on international justice.' 'This is not different from supporting Israel over Palestine, because history reminds us that Morocco is the oppressor who continues to illegally occupy the Western Sahara, which is still under occupation," said Mhlanga. The MK Party released a policy position earlier this week explaining that they believe South Africa and the Kingdom of Morocco should be committed to strengthening their bilateral relations, grounded in shared principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and African unity. 'The MK Party's identity is deeply rooted in the historic struggle for liberation and dignity in South Africa. Similarly, Morocco's history is marked by its resistance to colonial domination and its determined pursuit of national unity. 'Both nations were shaped by their anti-colonial struggles, South Africa from apartheid and Morocco from French and Spanish rule.' IOL Politics

REST WELL AUNTY GIGI
Aunty Gigi of Ontario Court, Hanover Park, who was a Daily Voice legend, and truly lived by the slogan: 'Ek Skrik Vir Niks', has passed away. Radio 786, announced that, Aunty Gadija 'Gigi' Richards had passed away this morning. As one of the newspapers' most loyal and longest-serving readers and supporters, she knew every editor and reporter's name by heart and wasn't bang to call a spade a spade or to take on politicians, grootkoppe in parliament or gangsters and would rek her bek about it. She fed many in need and opened her doors to everyone who was looking for a listening ear or advice. A loyal subscriber, she attended a Daily Voice breakfast more than a decade ago at the V&A Waterfront and continued to talk about how the aunties were treated like celebrities years on. As former Daily Voice reporter, Robin-Lee Francke, now with IOL news said, she was the aunty you had to make a visit to when you visited Hanover Park for a storie. Independent Newspaper's marketing department's Olwethu Bhozo, said: "She supported the newspaper loudly and unapologetically.' Former Voice reporter Mandilakhe Tshwete now with Independent Newspaper's National Hub said would be missing her phone calls from her. Mandi said: 'At the time when no one was using the land lines for the Daily Voice, up until we took out the land lines, she would call and say she did not receive the newspaper. 'She was a chatterbox, you could never just speak to her for five minutes, she would want to make her point and we will miss her.' Former News Editor and Editor of the Daily Voice Elliott Sylvester reflected on her contributions to the newspaper. He added: 'One of the great things about the Daily Voice is that it reflects the voice of the people of the Cape Flats. And few voices were clearer or more compelling than Aunty Gigi. "Always welcoming, and ready to have a chat about the latest happenings in her neighbourhood, she cared about her community and was in her own way an activist bringing to light stories we as journalists needed to cover. "Her dedication to the Voice, her outspoken nature and sense of humour will be missed. "When I started at the Voice, she would not hesitate to call us with her opinion and often advice on what we could do better. And always with a kind word and a laugh." Another former reporter for the newspaper, Vincent Cruywagen said: 'She was a walking encyclopedia of Hanover Park. Both friends and gangsters held her in high regard and I felt completely safe as I strolled with her through the treacherous flats of Hanover Park.' Rest well Aunty Gigi.

DA criticises Defence Minister Angie Motshekga for missing vital SANDF withdrawal meeting
The DA criticises Defence Minister Angie Motshekga for missing a key meeting on SANDF's DRC withdrawal, questioning government transparency and accountability after 14 soldiers died in the mission. Image: Tracey Adams/Independent Newspaper The Democratic Alliance has criticised Defence Minister Angie Motshekga for failing to attend a critical meeting of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, where the recent withdrawal of SANDF troops from the Democratic Republic of the Congo was set to be addressed. Despite the meeting being held virtually, the Minister was reportedly travelling in Russia and instead delegated the responsibility to her Deputy. The DA has highlighted the gravity of this issue, particularly after 14 South African soldiers lost their lives during the mission in the DRC. DA Spokesperson on Defence and Military Veterans, Chris Hattingh, criticised the Minister's absence, saying, "After 14 South African lives were lost during the mission in the DRC, it is appalling that the Minister is somehow unavailable to account to the people of South Africa." The party is also raising alarm over the withdrawal of SANDF troops and equipment from areas in eastern DRC controlled by the M23 rebel group, a region known for its volatility and strategic importance. According to Hattingh, "The lack of detail and transparency around this withdrawal raises serious questions about the government's crisis management and strategic planning."
