Oscar-winning Mikey Madison was almost confirmed for Shawn Levy-Ryan Gosling's Star Wars; here's everything to know

Fresh off her breakout performance in Anora, one of the year's most talked-about films, Mikey Madison is now being hailed as Hollywood's next big thing. With a BAFTA and an Independent Spirit Award, the 26 year old is suddenly at the top of every director's casting wish list. But what fans might not know is that she nearly boarded one of the most iconic franchises in cinema history: Star Wars. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Madison's carefully curated post-Anora career choices were put into focus. Since the film's debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Madison has been highly selective when it came to new work but she did set her sights on a few unexpected projects. One, according to the interview, was Reptilia, a love story about a dental hygienist who falls for a mermaid — directed by Alejandro Landes. The other? A galaxy far, far away. For months, there were hushed rumours circulating through industry circles that Madison had been considered for a role in the new Star Wars film — one that would be directed by Shawn Levy and features none other than Ryan Gosling. While Madison didn't go into detail about how far she got in the process, the buzz was very real. The Gosling-led project has been in development at Lucasfilm since 2022, with Levy working closely with the studio to create something distinct. The director himself hinted at the film's direction during a podcast appearance, saying: 'I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question. Because there's only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me, because I don't want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie."' That desire to break away from the franchise's well-worn territory might have been part of what attracted Madison — an actor now known for taking unconventional roles — to the project. And while the casting didn't ultimately come together, the near-miss has become a compelling 'what if' moment in her rising career. Before Anora thrust her into the spotlight, Madison had already been making waves in Hollywood. She played Manson follower Susan Atkins in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) and took on a memorable role in Scream 5 (2022).cNow, with her phone ringing off the hook and scripts landing at her feet, Madison may have passed on the lightsaber for now, but you never know what the future might hold.

Blake Lively's ex reveals why it was a 'struggle' to date her

Penn Badgley famously dated his Gossip Girl leading lady Blake Lively between 2007-2010 while starring on The CW soap, which wound up blurring the lines between fiction and reality for him. 'It was the struggle,' the 38-year-old Independent Spirit Award winner confessed on Call Her Daddy Wednesday. 'What starts to happen when you're in this one role for a long time — the aspect of celebrity being a part of it, a huge part of it — there is not enough separation, I think, for anybody. 'You're seen as this person, you're called their name out on the street. You also constantly have to be that person at work.' Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's critically-acclaimed adaptation of Cecily von Ziegesar's novel series about wealthy Manhattan teenagers aired for six seasons spanning 2007-2012. The series was followed by a standalone sequel, also titled Gossip Girl, which aired for two seasons between 2021 and 2023 on Max. Penn admitted he didn't possess the 'emotional maturity to understand how to differentiate' himself from his character - Brooklyn scholarship student Dan Humphrey - 'in terms of self-worth.' 'What people seemed to think of Dan seemed to be what people thought of me,' Baltimore-born Badgley noted. The Ariana Grande video star was 'starved for many kinds of intimacy' due to his parents divorcing and 'really longed for that kind of connection' with the troubled 37-year-old, who played socialite Serena van der Woodsen. Back in 2009, Blake confessed to Glamour of Penn: 'At first I was so upset that they hired him. I actually poisoned the whole cast against him. But then they noticed that he wasn't a jerk and was actually a really nice, charming person. Almost immediately I realized that too, but it took me about a week to admit it.' Lively (born Brown) is currently embroiled in a legal war against her It Ends With Us director-leading man Justin Baldoni, who happens to be close friends with Badgley. The You producer-star has even invited the 41-year-old filmmaker - who shares his Baha'i faith - to be a guest on his Podcrushed podcast in 2022 and 2023. Blake and Justin are scheduled to face off in Manhattan US District Court for a sexual harassment and defamation trial beginning March 2026, but the general public have already sided with Baldoni. Meanwhile, Penn and his wife of eight years - Domino Kirke - are set to welcome twin siblings this summer for their four-year-old son James. Badgley is also stepfather to the 41-year-old singer's 16-year-old son Cassius O'Kane from her relationship with musician Morgan O'Kane. The Ariana Grande video star was 'starved for many kinds of intimacy' due to his parents divorcing and 'really longed for that kind of connection' with the troubled 37-year-old, who played socialite Serena van der Woodsen The Lewis & Clark College drop-out - who also dated Blink Twice director Zoë Kravitz - originally met Domino at a meatball shop in 2014. Penn gushed: 'When we first met, it was immediate. And before we had time to think, I think we wanted to be together in the deepest way.' Badgley produced and stars as serial killer Joe Goldberg in the 10-episode fifth and final season of Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo's series You, which premieres this Thursday on Netflix. The small-screen adaptation of Caroline Kepnes' novel series will also feature Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, Griffin Matthews, Charlotte Ritchie, and Tati Gabrielle.

Spirit Awards: ‘How To Die Alone' Creator Natasha Rothwell Talks The Challenge Of Navigating 'Fairness' During 'A DEI Purge' And Celebrating Black Stories

Despite a recent cancellation for Hulu comedy series How to Die Alone, the celebrations will not stop for creator and star Nathasa Rothwell. The series followed Mel (Rothwell) a Black, plus-size and perpetually broke JFK Airport employee who's never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental death scare challenges her to ignite her passions. Rothwell, who won the Independent Spirit Award for Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, spoke to Deadline ahead of the event on the Indie Spirits red carpet about the challenge of finding a new home for the series. 'And I feel it's unfortunate that How to Die Alone was not able to survive that. It was worthy by all merits. It was a critical success and we had the numbers and more importantly, we were centering marginalized voices. We had representation on the stage. And that representation is being honored tonight. So it's exciting to see the show get that recognition in spite of the circumstances.' RELATED: In addition to the Indie Spirit win, the show also received two nominations at the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Directing for a Comedy Series. Rothwell went on to talk about the importance of being Black and having resilience in the cutthroat industry. 'Nothing quite prepares you for these particular types of shenanigans than being a Black woman that walks through this world,' the writer-actor said. 'Fairness is not something that we're as familiar with in a lot of areas. So being disappointed, those are experiences that I've felt before, but none at this magnitude. I'm grateful for the Black love and support of people who've shown up and held me up in encouragement. It's just confidence in knowing that the work speaks for itself. And although its journey is not what I had anticipated, it exists and people can find it and the message will live on forever.' RELATED: Rothwell's next project will see her team up with TikTok's Tareasa 'Reesa Teesa,' who went viral for sharing her true story about the wild dissolution of her marriage in a 50-part video series that ranged from five to 10 minutes long. 'I have so much stuff in store. That's the other silver lining when you're in a writer's room and in production for a TV show, your bandwidth is narrowed. So for the time being, I am able to entertain a lot of other projects.' Best of Deadline 'The White Lotus' Season 3 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Arrive On Max?
