Indian seamers not staying fit long enough is serious issue: Sanjay Manjrekar

New Delhi [India], July 23 (ANI): Former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar believes the struggles of Indian seamers to stay fit for a long time have become a 'serious issue' and need to be tackled 'properly'. With India trailing 1-2 against England in a five-match series and in a must-win situation, the tourists' camp has been plagued by injuries ahead of the contest in Manchester on Wednesday. Akash Deep, the hero of India's historic Test win at Edgbaston, is battling a groin injury. Arshdeep Singh, who is yet to earn his maiden Test cap, hurt his hand during a training session in Beckenham. With India plagued by injuries, Anshul Kamboj was sent to Manchester to bolster the depleted pace bowling attack. Before Akash's recent setback, he was away from the on-field action due to a long injury lay-off. During India's tour of Australia, Akash featured in two Tests and sustained a back injury, which kept him out for three months. He returned to the field for Lucknow Super Giants in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). 'I think there is a choice. But there are all untested young seam bowlers with talent. Arshdeep is an exciting option, and Anshul Kamboj as well. I liked Harshit Rana in the one Test he played in Australia. There will always be seam bowlers around. But it is just the kind of scenario we have,' Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo Match Day. Manjrekar labelled Akash's injury crisis as a 'glaring example' of the current injury crisis and the bane of the Indian seamers. Apart from Akash, the world's best Jasprit Bumrah is restricted from competing in all five Tests as part of his workload management. The precaution around Bumrah's usage stems from a stress reaction in his back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January. As a result, the 31-year-old is taking part in three out of the five fixtures. Young tearaway Mayank Yadav is another exciting talent who has missed the chance to test the speed gun. Mayank's time in the last edition of the IPL was cut down to four games due to a side strain. During his recovery, he sustained another injury, which further delayed his return. He eventually regained fitness and returned with his breakneck pace to feature against Bangladesh in T20Is, but another injury setback hindered his progress. The 22-year-old, who fetched a lucrative amount of Rs 11 crore for himself in the cash-rich league auction, recovered at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. After two appearances, the 23-year-old was forced to sit out due to a back injury. 'With the IPL, white-ball cricket, and Tests, we just don't have our fast bowlers staying fit long enough. Akash Deep is a glaring example. It is not like he has bowled a lot through the season, and hence, now, fit or workload management was not addressed properly,' he said. 'I think it has become a serious issue where you don't have Indian seam bowlers staying fit long enough, and that has to be addressed by Indian cricket. We see young, exciting bowling talent in the IPL, and after three matches, they are not seen in the next season. Somebody needs to get to the bottom of it,' he added. India's squad for fourth Test: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj. (ANI)

How will the sports governance bill impact BCCI? Explained

BCCI President Roger Binny cuts a cake to mark the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League before the opening cricket match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. (PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra) *** Local Caption *** The sports governance bill will bring the world's richest and most powerful cricket board under its ambit. There was considerable scepticism over how the legislation would impact the board's functioning and affect its upcoming elections. TOI explains... Is current BCCI president Roger Binny eligible for another term? No. The 1983 World Cup-winning team's hero is not eligible to contest for the president's post for another term as he has already attained the maximum age limit of 70 years. Binny turned 70 last Saturday. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Why can't he contest? The bill followed the age provisions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and International Federations (IFs). In cricket's case, the sport's global governing body – International Cricket Council (ICC) – did not have any age-cap provision, like 70 or 75 years. The bill incorporated the provisions of the Justice Lodha Committee, which framed the BCCI's constitution, and set the age cap of 70 for its office-bearers. Therefore, Binny cannot contest. Does BCCI have to conduct elections? It is mandatory for BCCI to hold fresh elections in its Sept or Oct Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect a new president and a set of office-bearers. Failing to do so would result in the govt's refusal to renew its annual recognition as per the provisions of the governance bill. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo In case of failure, its recognition would be revoked and it would not be allowed to use the name 'India' to represent the country in international tournaments, or host any fixtures as a national team. Can BCCI amend its constitution? Yes. The BCCI's constitution provides for one three-year term for an office-bearer, before a mandatory cooling-off period of the same duration. An office-bearer can again return to contest for any post after serving the cooling-off period. The BCCI could change its constitution at its AGM but in case of dispute, the aggrieved parties would have to approach the National Sports Tribunal first. The tribunal's verdict can only be challenged in the Supreme Court. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Suicide helplines choke with over 60% jump in calls from betting addicts

Hyderabad: Distress calls from youngsters hooked to online betting are choking suicide prevention helplines in Hyderabad. Counsellors report an over 60% spike in numbers in the last six months – compared to previous years – the majority of them being recorded during the IPL season, stretching from March to May 2025. In the last one year, local police registered about 80 cases involving online betting and gambling apart from 20 suicides. According to city-based suicide prevention service, Roshini Foundation, the jump in caller count this year is about 65% when compared to 2023. "Also, in 2023, 22% of all distress calls were related to online betting. In the first quarter of 2025, this figure stood at 36.5% with cricketing events like the Indian Premier League (IPL) triggering spikes," said Swarna Raju, director of Roshini. This includes students, salaried employees and businessmen, among others. The majority report losing money – from a few thousand to a few lakh – within minutes. "We used to receive about 80 to 100 calls every month from those addicted to online betting when the IPL season was on. Now, the average is around 10 a month," said Tekmal Sreekar Reddy, director of 1Life, another suicide prevention helpline. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 15 Most Beautiful Women in the World Undo He emphasised how the share of calls related to online betting losses has grown. "Of all calls that we received last quarter, about 20% were from those in financial distress — nearly 60% of them stemmed from online betting losses," he added. Even at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Erragadda, there has been enrolment of patients — young men around 25 to 30 years old — addicted to online betting and gambling. "This trend has grown due to the easy availability of more mobile apps," Dr Vivaswan Boorla, senior psychiatrist, IMH, said. He added: "After a few initial wins, youngsters start chasing big rewards. This is fuelled by celebrities and social media influencers who promote such betting apps. While clinically we consider it as an addictive illness, for patients, it is just another way of earning money. They do not consider it wrong," he added. Counsellors say that addicts reach out to helplines when they lose big money and are "overwhelmed with shame and isolation". "They feel that they have reached a point of no return and fear facing their families. That's why they contemplate suicide," explained Reddy. Individual mental health professionals also admit to recording alarming patterns among online betting addicts. "I have seen a 10% to 15% rise in distressed clients with betting-related issues walking into my clinic of late," said Jayanti Sundar Rajan, a counselling psychologist with over 20 years of experience.
