Aruna Mohanty's ‘Indian Swan Lake' production takes Odissi to global stage
BHUBANESWAR: ODISSI guru Aruna Mohanty provided an insight into 'Indian Swan Lake', a production that she presented in Germany in collaboration with L'Arte Del Mondo and European choreographer Deda Cristina Colonna. The production that was showcased in Aschaffenburg, Leverkusen and Schloss Sanssouci in June this year, intertwined the timeless beauty of a classical ballet Swan Lake with Nala Damayanti story from the epic, Mahabharata. At its heart lay the shared motif of the swan, a symbol of beauty, grace, and divine connection in Indian mythology as well as in Swan Lake. Mohanty gave a pictorial presentation of the collaboration and spoke about it during an event in the city on Wednesday. The choreography brought together melodies of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and the traditional Odissi music to create a harmonious fusion of musical and dance traditions of Odisha and Europe.

Tchaikovsky's ‘Swan Lake' gets an Odissi retelling
Bhubaneswar: A city-based Odissi dance institute, in collaboration with Germany's L`Arte del mondo, organised a teaser production titled 'Indian Swan Lake' here on Wednesday. The production intertwined the timeless beauty of Swan Lake with the Nala and Damayanti story from the epic 'Mahabharata'. "Odisha takes immense pride as its classical dance heritage finds global resonance through Indian Swan Lake, a remarkable confluence of Tchaikovsky's timeless masterpiece and the graceful elegance of Odissi. This cultural collaboration is a testament to Odisha's enduring artistic legacy and its evolving presence on the global stage," chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said in a social media post. Swan Lake is a ballet composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76 and is one of the most popular ballets of all time. Blending the story of Swan Lake with the Odia retelling of Nala and Damayanti, the abridged version of Indian Swan Lake portrayed the symbolic grace of the swan, an icon shared in both cultures, through an innovative fusion of western classical ballet and Odissi dance. The performance was jointly directed by European choreographer Deda Christina Colonna and eminent Odissi exponent Dr Aruna Mohanty, while the musical composition featured a harmonious blend of Tchaikovsky's original score with new compositions by Massimiliano Toni, Agnimitra Behera and Dhaneshwar Swain. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman sells ring given by ex, then jeweler tells her 'This can't be true' Daily Sport X Undo The work was organised by Werner Ehrhardt, director of L`Arte del mondo, and supported by the Embassy of India in Berlin, Germany, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi.
