The Caitlin Clark Effect
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark's rise to stardom is one to be studied. The 23-year-old missed her first game since high school on Wednesday, and the team arguably suffered without her. Clark is currently the most recognizable player in the WNBA, and with that comes scrutiny on and off the court. Short-handed Fever looking for more fight vs. 0-5 Sun
The Indiana Fever will look for a better result as they deal with the absence of superstar Caitlin Clark when they host the winless Connecticut Sun on Friday in Indianapolis. With the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year sidelined due to a strained left quad, the Fever (2-3) struggled to find their footing and dropped an 83-77 decision to the Washington Mystics on Wednesday. Indiana's Sophie Cunningham labeled the loss a "gut punch," while fellow guard Kelsey Mitchell continued the fight analogy. "We weren't sharp enough to be a contender for anything (versus Washington)," Mitchell added, per ESPN. "I think getting punched in the mouth early is humbling, because it shows where we need to be." Offseason acquisition DeWanna Bonner scored a team-high 21 points for the Fever. The six-time All-Star signed a one-year contract with Indiana after spending the previous five seasons with Connecticut. Sydney Colson scored four points in 31 minutes while starting in place of Clark, who missed a regular-season game for the first time in either her professional or collegiate career. Clark is expected to be out for at least two weeks after sustaining the injury in Indiana's 90-88 setback to the New York Liberty on Saturday. The Sun won't feel sorry for the Fever. Connecticut fell to 0-5 for the first time since the 2020 season after dropping a 109-87 decision to former UConn star Paige Bueckers and the previously winless Dallas Wings on Tuesday. "Until we understand what we're capable of doing and not capable of doing, we will play like that," Sun coach Rachid Meziane said, according to the Hartford Courant. "I've said many times that we have to play as a team, and playing as a team is both sides offensively and defensively. ... At the end of the day, we didn't put our heart on the court. We didn't make the effort to just have a chance to compete." Former WNBA MVP Tina Charles scored a season-high 27 points and Marina Mabrey added 19 in the loss against Dallas. Mabrey is questionable for Friday's game due to an ailing right quad. --Field Level Media

Fever coach Stephanie White reveals she was fined over apparent criticism of WNBA officiating
Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White didn't mince words when sharing her thoughts on officiating in the WNBA, which followed Saturday's game where Caitlin Clark suffered a quad injury that will sideline the star guard for at least two weeks. Apparently those strong remarks landed White in some trouble with the league. After the Fever suffered a disappointing loss against the Washington Mystics in the team's first game without Clark, White was asked during the postgame presser whether she believed the league needed to step in to protect top players from "intentionally rough play." "Obviously, I think we can get better in certain areas as far as how we call the game, consistency with how we call the game. . . . Are we going to say that we want a free-flowing offensive game, or are we going to have tough, grind-out physical games? And whatever way it is, the players will adjust and coaches will adjust but we can't have it be one way one quarter and another way another quarter." She continued, "I don't think collectively as a whole the league has to step in and do something, I just think that there has to be some improvements in certain areas." But when pushed further on what those areas might be, White revealed that her previous remarks – likely those on Saturday night – resulted in her receiving a fine. "Are we trying to get me fined again? Because I did just get fined," she said with a smirk. White did not elaborate further, but the fine likely stemmed from her comments following Saturday's loss to the New York Liberty. "I think it's pretty egregious what's been happening to us the last four games, you know, a minus-31 free throw discrepancy," White said, adding she believed Clark was fined in the play of the game. "And I might be able to understand it if we were just chucking 3s. But we're not. We're attacking the rim and the disrespect right now for our team has been pretty unbelievable." White said Monday that she was not sure when Clark sustained the injury exactly. "Sometimes great players don't tell you when they're hurting," she said. "I'm glad that she did because we need to nip this in the bud." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Caitlin Clark Praised for What She Did in First Game Since Injury
Caitlin Clark is the WNBA's most popular player, and her presence has changed the league almost overnight. Clark's games with the Indiana Fever are routine sellouts across the country, with some teams even moving their games to larger venues to accommodate the massive crowds. Advertisement Fans at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis have the chance to see Clark several times a year, but she wasn't in the lineup on Wednesday for their game against the Washington Mystics in Baltimore. Despite being out with an injury, Clark was spotted before the game, taking photos with fans and signing memorabilia. Fans leaned over the railing with jerseys, T-shirts, trading cards and more as Clark continued to sign. The Fever announced that Clark will be out for at least two weeks with a strained left quad. The team says that she will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Head coach Stephanie White said that she wasn't sure exactly when Clark suffered the injury, but noted that the Fever star said she felt pain in her leg after a game against the New York Liberty over the weekend. Advertisement After undergoing an MRI to check on the severity of the injury, the team ruled the strain would hold her out for two weeks. Following the announcement, White noted that playing without Clark would give the team a chance to move through adversity. "It's a great opportunity for our team to find an identity, it's a great opportunity for our team play in a different way," the first-year head coach said. "I also think it's a great opportunity for Caitlin to watch the game from the sideline and to grow almost a coaching mind and mindset and see some different things that we may be talking about on film, addressing in practice, to see it develop in live action." Wednesday's game will be the first that Clark will miss in her career due to injury, and the first she will have missed since her record-setting career at Iowa. Advertisement The Fever are off to a 2-2 start to the season, and they'll look to move past .500 on the early part of the season without their best player on Wednesday night.
